Parents left in the car with a parang (machete), which is something worrying if you're in the wrong neighbourhood. But being my parents in this suburban-bordering-on-rural area, it wasn't long before they came home with a 10-foot-long green bamboo trunk, one end braced against the inside of the boot hatch and the other sticking out of the front passenger window like a harpoon. I wish I got a photo but I was laughing too hard.

@Ellirahim It's quite likely for my mum's garden. She builds supports and trellises for her plants.

And what do 70-year-old uncles do with a parang in the car? Usually out to be a menace to local flora.

@Ellirahim There's an Iban uncle who walks around my neighbourhood every evening, sometimes with a parang hanging from his belt. We are fairly confident this is for undergrowth pruning reasons. 😁

(He's friendly and always says hello to me and my dog.)

Barely cracked the daily minimum of 33,333 words with a grand total of 33,336 words. Today was tough. I was busy, then I was tired. If anything, this month is a constant reminder of showing up even when I don't feel like it.

The hardest thing about #NaNoWriMo is the continual effort of invention.

Even if you know where the narrative starts and where it ends and the big events in between, many more small events are needed to fill 50k words.

It also needs to be engaging with a sense of building tension. This is where one’s craft comes in.

It’s an amazing experience, a humbling fire consuming old mental structures yet powering the creation of new ways of thinking.

Inside SSPCA – the magazine

It gives me great pleasure to share with you this year's issue of Inside SSPCA, which debut during Asia for Animals 2023 - Oct 11-13. It was a great deal of fun (and some level of stress) to put together. While it tapped into an existing skill set, it also forced me to think beyond the level of just a writer or just a copyeditor.

I am pleased to have finished my first short story for by the middle of the day, and by that I meant that I started half the story at midnight and finished it this morning. I was also made aware that some of my friends just started their day.

It is just below 3k words and is a magical realism type story about two urban explorers who fell into a pocket dimension at an abandoned mansion, before one of them found out a secret the other had been keeping from them.

Some hubmasters for have already received the package for the event in September. Ours is already in Sepang, and I'm hoping that it wouldn't get stuck there for a month since it's courier and not normal mail. We've never had a problem with it in previous years, so fingers crossed.

I have a kickstarter thingy that never arrived through no fault of the creator. It simply disappeared when it arrived in Malaysia. This is why I always discourage people from mailing me things.

The tracker shows that my package is "In Delay". This could mean that they've detected the sloshing of 15 bottles of ink inside and want some paperwork to assure that it's not dangerous. This has already happened to a number of people, and if I remember correctly, our previous Hubmaster had to deal with a similar instance. We're over a month to the event, so I'm not concerned. Yet.

Meanwhile, some over-excited (and probably new) Hubmaster took photos of the 2023 giveaways and posted them on the public group. While I don't think there's a proper embargo, there is an agreement that the items are to be a surprise. Other Hubmasters are mad at them for spoiling the surprise.

Regulars to pretty much know what to expect. They just don't know what exactly it'll look like.
