So there's an award-winning film named Snow In Midsummer that's widely discussed in Taiwan and elsewhere at the moment, it's about Malaysia's 13th May racial riots, an event that my mom experienced firsthand and which is only discussed in hushed tones. Not sure if it'll ever be aired in Malaysia.

@rakyat ahh, i'd love to watch this. my father was right in the heart of the race riots... and he was quite reticent about it. I only knew that they had to stretch the rice, can't open windows for fear of being shot and that's all I knew... other than "don't talk about race" and definitely stock piling food during elections.

Talking about Malaysian accents, I am reminded of how my friend and I were immediately identified as Malaysians in this Asian grocery store in Ireland.

How to identify Malaysians:

  1. an ethnic Chinese and ethnic Indian walks into a store together
  2. speaking English with a more neutral accent
  3. being excited over wing beans and petai

One change in recent years I've noticed is, a lot more people back in Malaysia ask me if I feel safe, and how bad is it in the U.S., and if I've ever encountered gun violence there, instead of assuming I plan to stay long term in the U.S.

So the shiny veneer of the Land of Opportunity has definitely washed away since the start of the pandemic

If we can see all people as deserving to feel safe, and all people as our own people, then maybe the world will be a slightly better place.

There's a tendency to protect our own, but I wish "our own" is "all of us."

It's almost a year since I started actively being on here and my observations so far:

It is actually very opaque to most people how different Fedi software using ActivityPub actually interact with each other

You might think you know what other people on other software see/do but you probably don't! Unless you have an account on other instances using other softwares and actually test things out!

Also, this has massive implications on Fedi safety, if that is something you are actively working on.

(terminology might be wrong: I just did a very quick lookup of it)

I have a lot of thoughts related to the recent posts about how Fedi (or "Mastodon" I guess, as most people are only referring to Mastodon) has "lost" to Bluesky, and how terrible it is that people are not willing to learn how to be on here, it should be MORE POPULAR, that mostly boils down to two things:

  1. I still think Fedi is the best social media platform we have for an open internet
  2. But I don't feel comfortable recommending people to hop on here unless I am personally willing to be their guide too, and if they are not willing to put in the time

Personally, what made Fedi work for me is my willingness to drop my entire network and restart, and I have the patience to look things up, read documentations, investigate instances. I moved instances four times, opened accounts on more. I don't know if I would expect people to do that lightly.*

*choices are still choices, and we should own what our choices mean, but this is an explanation for why it's Hard to Fedi

In general, you should be wary of Allies* whose only lesson they took to heart is Believe BIPOCs No Matter What (except those others who are either "white" or "brainwashed"). I have seen, through all my years on social media and older social networks (I have been incredibly online for over 20 years), BIPOCs whose identities were erased because they disagreed, BIPOCs who were thought of as "self-hating" because they disagreed, or just shut out of the conversation, because they disagreed with the one that Allies decided to prop up.

And if you want a timeline that is less about social media meta and more about everything else, you can! My fandom account is 90% fandom stuff, 9% rl talk, 1% social media meta

Whenever I read something along the lines of that, I get annoyed because what? People need to be hardworking, a contribution to the economy, etc. to have rights and feel safe?

(Many times, well meaning people have told me that they "cannot imagine why they make visas such a painful process. People like you are a great contribution to the country!")

Last meal in Atlanta

Breakfast of over easy eggs, grits, biscuit and a sausage. Not pictured, sauteed kale because I need my greens. Friend got pancakes with bananas. The pancakes were really good!

The biscuit is good too (it's usually too dry when I had it in the past)

The other places I ate at that I enjoyed: Urban Hui

It was a little trippy to hear Indonesian music as we were eating 😆

And then I ended up chatting a bit with the waiter, who is Indonesian who thought I was too because I was like omg who chose the music! (No, I didn't recognize them, but I did not expect to hear Indonesian music)

This pic is not all... The noodles came later and I think we did order more stuff (this is all for two people, but I have a very good holiday stomach, and only the bok choy was left unfinished by the end)
