Which video games have been trapped on a hardware platform (console/handheld/headset/etc.) that you wish would be ported well?

I was reading about Oculus accounts that haven't been assimilated into Meta accounts being erased, & it got me thinking about games trapped on hardware platforms again. What are some of the games you wish would have good ports across different hardware?

What kinds of games might you recommend with deep worldbuilding and interaction that aren't RPGs?

I like worldbuilding and stories, and I like when they're mixed with the interactivity of games, so RPGs seem like they should be a natural fit. Problem is, I dislike the stat-heavy, grindy progression of many RPGs.

I enjoy point & click adventures and visual novels but they're often more limited in their interactions. What kinds of game might I be missing combining the two?

What games would you suggest that have LAN support these days?

While PC may be one's first thought here, I'd also be really interested in any mobile games that might leverage one's local wifi network for multiplayer.

Classics are a-okay for suggestion too, btw!

What online multiplayer games play well over wifi/higher latency?

I'm thinking turn-based games may work okay in this respect, but which of those might you recommend besides Civ? Also what other types of games work better over wifi/higher latency than you might expect?

I know ideally you'd simply wire up your system to not have to fuss with either, but it's not always an option in some circumstances.

How do you like to approach writing about games?

I've noticed there are some folks writing at length here on their experiences playing games, so this felt like a good place to ask. Do you take notes as you play, and/or after each session, then write out full thoughts upon completing a game?

Or are your reflections compiled only after finishing a game, no notes?

I've dabbled with different approaches, and haven't really settled on a consistent process personally.

Suggestions for a non-survival building game with a similar scale/level of detail to Lego Worlds?

I've found myself with this interest once more, and looking about, it seems like there's still not much like ol' Lego Worlds.

However, I'm hoping I may be overlooking something right in front of me, and no, from what I've seen, Lego Fortnite is not that option. Non-generated world I think, different building style, simply a different sort of game despite the same branding.

What are some videogames you'd suggest to someone kinda tired of regular gamey tropes and patterns? And that aren't the magnificent Outer Wilds and its expansion?

Have run through some revisions on the camera code I'm working on, but I'm still running into the same sort of bugs...So I've not pinned down the issues yet.

At least it looks kinda interesting.

...What do you call the person that experiences/perceives a creative work?

There's the broad term creator for those doing the creating, but I'm struggling to think of a similar term for those experiencing the created work.

Consumer is way too wrapped in business I feel, yet it's maybe the closest that comes to mind. 🤔

I know since I don't really use Steam that much I can't necessarily complain a ton that its system doesn't know what to try to show me, but...On the occasions I do use it, I try to tune it to better suggest games to me, and yet the discovery queue continues to mostly fail.

A couple of likely reasons that stick out to me are Steam's overly broad/loose categorizations & reliance on categorization to try to make recommendations. Games are too mushy/fluid for that.

the cool part of battle for wesnoth with my current limited knowledge of it is it seems to be a rare example of an open source game that isn't just a version of a commercial game.

I'm slightly concerned if I learn a little more about it I'll come to find that it is just an open source remake of a commercial game.

on the plus side if it is then there's still also cataclysm: dark days ahead that I'm pretty sure is an original work.

since free in video games has come to mean more like heavily monetized, predatory business models, and even being rife with ads, what's another word or way to describe games that are free but without all that noise?

I haven't played Minecraft: Java Edition in a few years now, and um...Has its performance tanked over time or something?

Playing it windowed with its default resolution (which is low! some odd resolution below 1024x768), and its performance is rough. Drawing consistently over 50% CPU, feasting on over a gig of RAM as I recall, and struggling to maintain a decent framerate on the surface.

Underground's a little better, but not by much.

Not a ton of experience with Linux so I may be missing something obvious, but a prebuilt binary should mean I can download, unzip, & double click the binary and, if everything else is situated, run it, right?

E.g. a little game like this: https://luckeyproductions.itch.io/opensaucer

Tried this on Ubuntu Mate via file browser & running via terminal but no luck, only illegal instruction & illegal instruction (core dumped). 🤔

more games after Halo should have taken inspiration from its bright colors and big open levels that aren't open world imo

maybe there were but I dunno how you translate the above into search terms

...I should probably upgrade my PC simply so I don't have to fuss with trying to find game reviews that try to relate to folks that don't have the inclination to upgrade every year.

I'm not alone in this, right? Next to no reviews for games bother to get into the ugly details of whether the game can really run at minimum or somewhere in-between specs, much less last gen consoles (when available), despite there being many out there that will try to.

Which tags might I enjoy following for games stuff that isn't as driven by big industrial output, besides maybe indie games?

I'm tired of much of the corporate stuff anymore.

Does Proton for games on Linux work without using Steam? 🤔

I know vaguely of stuff like Lutris, so I'm still wondering how gaming on Linux looks if you're not completely bought into Valve's pseudo-monopoly. That should be in line with Linux thinking, right?

If it does, hell yeah. Then the other trick might be controller stuff outside of Steam, but one step at a time.

Catching up on some news from a few days ago and it's a bummer to see there's been more consolidation in the games industry (Atari acquiring Digital Eclipse, Devolver Digital acquiring System Era, the Astroneer devs).

How anyone can think consolidation is good in an industry where EA has become infamous for showing how bad it can be is bizarre to me.

I honestly never expected to see anyone post a video of trying games on this tiny phone, but I'm here for it. I'm also genuinely impressed it's able to handle emulators at all.

Video games, by & large, are made through artificial constraints on an otherwise almost limitless virtual space. The aim being to create interesting situations to engage people, and more often than not, entertain.

An interesting parallel exists with the internet, except that artificial constraints are made not to engage and entertain, but to preserve economic models that struggle to justify themselves in the face of practically unlimited supply.

Tbh even games struggle to justify economies.

commercial phenomena in games, and digital media respectively, that I don't think I'll fully understand from the buyer's perspective: Early Access and preordering.

The first is buying an objectively incomplete, typically inferior product, paying to basically help test it. The other is a carryover from physical media that doesn't make any sense in a strictly digital context for buyers.

I understand these from the biz end, but for buyers? Seems a mostly bad or worthless deal.

I just remembered this brief part of a video doing a deep dive on how Fallout 76 hasn't really improved, and it makes me feel better that I'm not alone in thinking it's increasingly nuts how Bethesda fans will voluntarily and freely fix or improve their games when given mod tools.

At first it was kinda cool back when Bethesda was only just becoming a big success, so back with Morrowind say, but after Fallout 3? And especially Skyrim?

It's a gross joke.
