For any game devs or voxel software devs out there, what particular reasons are there for often opting for larger cubes for voxels?

My rough understanding (as I've found it tricky to find more accessible technical info on voxels), is that they don't necessarily even have to be cubes at all.

Setting that aside though, I'm mainly interested in the scaling question, as I know smaller cubes can & have been used occasionally.

This is an unfortunate read, but it's another signal of how dependence on near monopolistic corporations continues to harm independent websites. If it wasn't Google here it would be some major social media company. They have no interest in coordinating with the wider web.

...I should probably upgrade my PC simply so I don't have to fuss with trying to find game reviews that try to relate to folks that don't have the inclination to upgrade every year.

I'm not alone in this, right? Next to no reviews for games bother to get into the ugly details of whether the game can really run at minimum or somewhere in-between specs, much less last gen consoles (when available), despite there being many out there that will try to.

A bunch of fumbling around with a Godot third-person platformer template later & I have something resembling a clunky controllable third-person camera with zoom via the mouse.

Originally it captured the mouse in the window & used mouse movement for camera controls, which was okay, but not my preference. Plus it lacked zoom, which I like to have in third-person games.

I picked up camera code from a different project & adjusted for direct control, but zoom took picking through docs.

So, given the kinda joke about people hating phone calls, yet using voice chat in games, I can't help wondering what people's preferences may be on chatting in games.

When you play online games, which do you lean towards when it comes to text/voice chat, or other options I didn't fit here, contextual pinging (e.g. Apex Legends), emotes, or voice/chat commands (e.g. Team Fortress 2/AoE 2)?

Repost/boost as you will, curious about this!

If GameFAQs doesn't have cheats for a PS1 game, where else do you look? Alternatively are there cheat files for PS1 emulators to load in? ๐Ÿค”

For anyone around that keeps a log as they play games, how do you go about it? Take notes during play, and/or after?

Written, or audio notes, to transcribe later?

World of Padman is a delightful freeware arena shooter with an impressive amount of work put into it! It's meant more for multiplayer, but the bots are pretty fun to play against too!

Such a goofy fun game, definitely suggest giving it a try!

From my last repost, that's a great mix of composers to collaborate on an album!

The album, Giants, has composers that have worked on Mega Man, Ninja Gaiden, Final Fantasy, Sonic, Celeste, and the like. Well worth checking out!

Bonus: it's available on Bandcamp!

Kudos to @UNVofficial's site for linking over to World of Padman's site, otherwise I may not have come across it!

Also check out Unvanquished! It's another free game, but it's a mix of RTS and FPS gameplay, which sounds interesting to me.

Hmm. CostGames or CostlyGames for a short, distinct tag for commercial games, and GratisGames for noncommercial games?

I'd say Paid instead but that feels like it overlaps too much with Sponsored, and doesn't clearly indicate Commercial aspect that's meant.

Does Proton for games on Linux work without using Steam? ๐Ÿค”

I know vaguely of stuff like Lutris, so I'm still wondering how gaming on Linux looks if you're not completely bought into Valve's pseudo-monopoly. That should be in line with Linux thinking, right?

If it does, hell yeah. Then the other trick might be controller stuff outside of Steam, but one step at a time.

since free in video games has come to mean more like heavily monetized, predatory business models, and even being rife with ads, what's another word or way to describe games that are free but without all that noise?

A GDC talk I'd really like to see would be how the devs behind Lego Worlds worked out their world generation from, if memory serves, like 1x1 stud plates to layers of Lego plate terrain. At least, you could break parts of the environment down to that scale.

It's bizarre to me that even at the time it released that didn't seem to stir much conversation simply for the tech. Was it doing something that's dead obvious to those that know more?

What's a game called, or what is the genre of a game, with detailed interactivity and interesting worldbuilding without RPG progression systems or mechanics? ๐Ÿค”

You might say "immersive sim" but these often also have that, for me at least, RPG baggage attached. Although not always, as Dishonored arguably sheds much of that in its design.

Still, unsure how to search for these sorts of games.

I honestly never expected to see anyone post a video of trying games on this tiny phone, but I'm here for it. I'm also genuinely impressed it's able to handle emulators at all.

Every so often I'll look through Steam's games sorted by fewest reviews to try to find different games, and it's always interesting. Many of them are the classic shovelware types, but others are either strange or simply got lost in the tides of titles.

Take for example Boomerang Battles. Clean artwork, seems to be family friendly, popular genre. Chances are it simply released amidst a bunch of other roguelikes and wasn't seen.

Didn't realize how much time has passed since I last checked in on Tower Unite and Meet Your Maker. Both have seen some substantial updates.

Tower Unite put out its new game world Slaughterday Night Live, a set of first-person shooter game modes they've had in the works for awhile.

Meet Your Maker made tweaks to allow player outposts to be kept available to raid indefinitely for the cost of in-game currency. It also added new areas, guards, weapons, traps, & suits.

Somehow I only just learned of Vengi Voxel Editor, which while still pretty new is also fairly comparable to MagicaVoxel, and with the bonus of being open source.

https://github.com/vengi-voxel/vengi?tab=readme-ov-file#readme

However, I must also mention that Goxel has been around much longer, and while less robust, that's to its benefit in that it's easier to pick up.

https://github.com/guillaumechereau/goxel?tab=readme-ov-file#readme

If you want to simply dive into voxel art, I'd say Goxel. If you want more, then open Vengi Voxel Editor.

Me, not making games, never having made a game, just played a lot:

My brain, processing those experiences: now we design? we make?

Me, vaguely knowing the complex mess involved in game making:

My brain, despite that knowledge: but we make? we design?

Me: -internally screams-

I know Godot has been making pretty big improvements & seeing more attention lately, so maybe it's an a-okay option for 3D game development now more than ever, but how's it compare to FOSS game engines that are mainly/only 3D?

E.g. Panda3D/Torque3D/etc.
