I’m definitely of the belief that having a public broadcaster is important, but then there are moments when… when that public broadcaster isn’t funded to do real journalism but must chase click bait bullshit like everywhere else and I internally debate the benefit. I bet the editor gets a fucking bonus for the dek of this article too https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/plastic-pollution-lids-straws-culture-war-1.7207579

@ShaunOttawa @geekingirl yep. I emptied my presto card last year and cancelled it. Pay everywhere with CC, either in a phone wallet or physical card. Way less hassle

I think a lot about how in 2024 if “democracy” is supposed to continue/succeed in its current shitty structure, majority governments are going to have to be a thing of the past. “Compromise” mostly doesn’t exist anymore. Nothing “really” has been done for good on aggregate with majority governments in a while. All that exists as a bulwark is the court system unless the general public grows a spine but that isn’t a reliable counter measure

I don’t know if we’re prepared for how many people do not and will not give a fuck about serious transmissible infectious disease outbreaks and future pandemics. Considering is already over according to every government and no one is seriously grappling with what happened over the past four years, I’m not hopeful on a large scale

The kid ate shit twice on a bike ride of less than 2 km because this city gives zero shits about wildly large curb cuts (and everything else). The fact that Britannia intersection by Beachconers is as horrid as it is being, I’d argue one of the most busy intersection for folks not in a car is proof enough. And the entrance to the kids school is soooooo bad and busted up that its almost impossible to enter on a bike and the kid ate it right in front of his own school

I look forward to the all out campaign against “woke” insurance companies is going to mount now that they have brought in a law erasing from all materials produced by the state. Property prices sure to surge when no one can get coverage 🥸

I don't want to undermine the importance of having public transit be safe, but media needs to stop covering "violence on the Metro" as if pubtrans is more deadly than car travel.

Sure, you're not the one driving the Metro so you don't feel as in control. But I suspect the numbers would show a lot more violence per day in car travel than pubtrans.

Let's work for violence prevention on pubtrans, but also stop stoking middle class fears of pubtrans.

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL 100% this absolutely makes me crazy. Yes for sure there are incidents on transit that make the news cycle but no one bates an eye by all the folks killed when driving cars is involved.

I wonder if there has been a time other than now when more of the NCC pathways along the Ottawa River (both sides) have had so many closures, other than during flooding and rehabilitation. It's kind of astounding how much of it is closed and detoured.

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull it’s not like the single lanes because of construction work just fine around westboro beach for people driving and the NCC could just use 2 of the 4 lanes close to downtown where that long-ass detour is but that’s not a precedent that can be set 🙃

I followed Diane Deans pretty closely from 2019-2023 and say what you will about her but she gave no fucks about Jim Watson. And today not a single councillor who blindly followed Jim’s shadow had a damn thing to say about her. Just deep seated, pathetic cynicism

Step-daughter of a friend of ours saw the 11-yr old kid get killed in Rockland, by someone driving a school bus, while they were riding their bike. What the fuck…

I’ve said it a bunch of times but I completely changed the route we take to the kids school which is only 1.2 kms away. We take a ~ 2 km route to avoid the utter mayhem that takes over people during drop offs and pick ups, esp school bus and transport vans

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@meganL I never expected this would be the case for some reason but it’s wildly infuriating to me. We are lucky that there are options esp when the kid wants to wheel himself to school but this route is also seasonal and temporary. On the one hand it doesn’t make sense but on the other it does considering we don’t “really” care about kids at all

grivettcarnac,
@grivettcarnac@mstdn.social avatar

@casseagull I do love my heart beating from movement and not getting my heart rate up because someone nearly fucking killing us becayse they can’t wait or be slow for 30 secs… the e-bikes make it easy so jokes on them?!!! The kid is strong enough to bike the long way thankfully which involves the MUP south of Mud Lake which we can’t use when covered in ice but will have to figure out a different route come next December.

I’m no stan that government is our lord & saviour but people who dump on government can do anything blah blah never have shit to say about stuff like this. I just don’t understand how it’s hard to wrap your head around that profit. is. all. that. matters. That’s it. Profit will always win. Governments mostly assist in this and sometimes “have” to step in when an airplane company is out here just killing people https://www.npr.org/2024/05/14/1251477809/boeing-justice-department-charges

This is not cheering for the pay workers get at Chinese EV manufacturing companies or the supply chains etc but the fact that North American car companies have made zero moves to make simple, low cost EVs is pathetic. “Flood the market” blah blah blah. There’s no free market anyway just protectionism, government subsidies and the gatekeeping to keep EVs at $50,000 a piece. Say nothing of the #climatechange song and dance about getting folks into EVs #canada #cdnpoli #ev

grivettcarnac,
