A request for attendees of : there are a total of 3 working elevators in the building that service the relevant floors. They are chronically overused, leading to wait times of multiple minutes. If you are able-bodied and not transporting heavy / cumbersome stuff, please consider using the stairs and escalators instead, so that people and loads that have to use elevators to get around, like wheelchair users and bottle transports, can do so without waiting forever. Thank you. <3

Anyone know of a good way I can have some #selfhosted service set as an #ethernet #networking gateway which I can then toggle on/off - killing all traffic I route that way?

Yes, I am looking for an easier way of manually cutting teenager internet access.

hacksilon,

@AngryAnt probably not relevant for you, but I’m using a router from the German Company Fritz. They have a fairly good Integration with Home Assistant and let you limit Internet access on a per-device basis with binary switches. Probably not worth switching routers over, but if you happen to be using this router anyway…

hacksilon,

@AngryAnt agreed. In that case, I have no recommendations for you, but I wish you the best of luck 😊

NBD.

hacksilon,

@odr_k4tana yep, hab ich auch gemacht. Trotzdem eine interessante Auswahl.

Playing around with my setup and some smart thermostats, and considering where I want to go from here.

Currently, I am running two Fritz!DECT thermostats (a 301 and a 302), and they both work fine. However, I don't necessarily want to lock myself into the Ecosystem forever, and the thermostats are quite pricey.

I only see two alternatives at the moment: Go with a thermostat with , or try a Bluetooth thermostat like the eqiva eQ-3, which are cheaper, but require me to also set up some bluetooth proxy devices. However, since I also wanted to look into , the bluetooth proxies wouldn't be too terrible a price to pay, as they could pull double duty for both, I guess.

So, since I had some success with these things, I'm asking the community here on Mastodon: Any recommendations on where to go from here? Stick to what works and shell out the money for the Fritz hardware? Or is there a specific, easy to use and affordable Zigbee Thermostat you can recommend? I'm a bit afraid of going the Bluetooth route, as there seem to be only a low two-digit number of installations using the relevant integration...

Based in Germany and using a "normal" radiator (the Fritz devices fit without any adapters, but I don't know what the exact type name of the threading is).

Hey / Community. I‘m looking for recommendations for strips. Requirements:

  • no DIY (I don’t want to have to figure out all the details about power requirements, repowering along the strip, soldering, etc. - I‘ve put this off for too long and want something that Just Works™️, otherwise I’ll never get around to doing this, and I‘m willing to pay the premium this costs)
  • WiFi or ZigBee (preferred) control, compatible with / (no Bluetooth, no IR remotes, no mandatory proprietary apps and clouds)
  • Available in Europe (no US only stores)
  • available in different lengths and LED densities, colors optional.

There has to be something available that ticks all of these boxes, right? Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

My new strategy to deal with clickbaity / drama YouTube videos is to just drop the link into the Universal summarizer (https://kagi.com/summarizer/index.html) and read the one-paragraph summary.

„15 things you MUST DO with your new XYZ“ - summarize - „yeah, it’s basically just ‚this is how you change your wallpaper‘. Pass.“

„We just got some terrible news about starfield“ - summarize - „there are only four characters you can romance.“

Great way to screen for actually relevant information in between the clickbait, without giving the video advertising money and views. Even made myself an iOS shortcut for the share sheet to get the video summarized directly from the YouTube app (also works for any other URL). https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/99308c37b38749e59590db6a2eeb96fd

This is the kind of that I‘m really getting value from.

Hey community. My girlfriend has a Google Home Mini lying around. We don't want to use it with any Google stuff. Is there a nice way to integrate it with Home Assistant, for example as a (dumb) speaker or as a microphone for the "Year of the voice" features (or for something else cool)? Or is the device useless without a connection to Google? Couldn't find any good information on this online, but I may have used the wrong search terms.

So, since Reddit seems to be imploding - have you already found some good -related / communities that are worth following?

I humbly present to you https://fedia.io - a general interest kbin instance.

hacksilon,

@jerry Thank you so much for all the work you are doing! <3

Seems like there is some issue with image storage / retrieval for me at the moment - I can't see any avatars, and places where other kbin instances show post preview images also seem to be empty on fedia for me. Is this a known / general issue, or should I check on my end?

Hat jemand Erfahrung damit, einen @SensorCommunity Feinstaubsensor mit einem Solar-Powerpack dauerhaft mit Strom zu versorgen? Klappt das, oder zieht das Ding zu viel?
