"What caricature is in painting, burlesque is in writing; and in the same manner the comic writer and painter correlate to each other; as in the former, the painter seems to have the advantage, so it is in the latter infinitely on the side of the writer. "
The Works of Henry Fielding

English writer and dramatist Henry Fielding died in 1754. He is known for his rich earthy humor and satirical prowess and as the author of the novel Tom Jones.

18th century satirists are to die for. Between Fielding, Smollet, Sterne, and Swift, we're all spoiled for choice on fiction that pulls no punches.

Dutch Baroque painter and printmaker Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn died in 1669. Rembrandt is also known as a painter of light and shade and as an artist who favoured an uncompromising realism that would lead some critics to claim that he preferred ugliness to beauty. via @Britannica

My favorite among the masters. His self-portraits, especially, are incredible not just in technique but in how their progression over time tells his story in such an intimate and sad way.

Okay, so the theme for is / (political songs). I think this counts, being an anti-war protest rendition of the national anthem.

The only time I heard an electric guitar mimic bombs and guns.

I bow before thine altar, Love!"

Tobias Smollett died in 1771. He was best known for picaresque novels such as The Adventures of Roderick Random (1748), The Adventures of Peregrine Pickle (1751) and The Expedition of Humphry Clinker (1771), which influenced later novelists, including Charles Dickens. via @wikipedia

Cool beans. Since I'm down to polishing up the book, I went ahead and got the file uploaded for pre-order via Draft2Digital. And here's the book page on Books2Read with so far three sites listing it:

@DocCarms Oh, MAN. I always get this painful twist in my chest every time I listen to this song. So many happy memories from childhood attached to it, and it doesn't help that the song's also amazing on its own. :blobreachsob:

I'm dying to see this film. I knew nothing about the murders in the Osage Nation (Oklahoma) over oil and money, but there's also a great video distilling the main elements explored by the book that finally brought a forgotten case back out in the open. I watched the video, of course, and now I want to see if the local library has David Grann's book.

NOW AVAILABLE: The House of Ash (print and e-book)

My newest gothic horror novella is now out (woot!). 'The House of Ash' is a standalone vampire fiction book that's set in an AU Victorian England. There's a romantic subplot in the book, but the primary focus is the family matriarch and her efforts at protecting her blind grandson.

For more detailed info on the moodboard (attached to this toot), content warnings, etc., please check out my site's gallery page (link below).

School hasn't started yet, and I already saw Halloween candy being set up on the shelves of a Walgreens store. That's so gross.

@jcrabapple I don't think we'll need to at this point.

@cordillera That's pretty good though sad to hear about the lead singer. I'm a massive, massive fan of post-punk music. I prefer it over punk (The Clash is the only punk band I can listen to) with the weird, dark dreamscape of the sound. Have you heard of She Wants Revenge?

Okay. Just 10 1/2 minutes into the movie, and they bless me with this spectacular moment. If this doesn't scream "crazed bloodlust", I don't know what does.
