@SirTapTap I prefer the “burn a hole through” variety, it leaves the giant enemy some time to ponder their demise. Fantasy-themed games tend to opt for plain impalement, which is a satisfactory substitute. It also leaves a picturesque corpse.
@smiletolerantly@gerikson AFAIR there was a short story where the Culture takes a look at Earth around the 70ies and decides to leave it alone for now.
PSA: The latest update of Ice Cubes removes the built-in PRO key for DeepL. This was very costly to maintain (around $250 per month). If your instance doesn’t provide a translation service, I invite you to switch to the built-in Apple translation service that the app now supports (only on iOS 17.4+) or to create a free DeepL API key.
@IceCubesApp Are there any plans to unify the UI? Currently Apple-provided translations open in a tiny popup, which may be unusable if it opens in the wrong place. DeepL translations open in the content area, and reserve more space if needed.
My favorite part of WWII history is gigantic pride-of-the-nation IJN carriers called shit like "HOLY GLOWING PHOENIX" getting one-shot by USS subs named shit like "Big Fishy"
Naive but sincere question: if browsers are so hard to write, how come we have to write a whole browser instead of like there being a javascript engine, a css engine, an html engine, an http client, a windowing/tab system, and so on.
@jonny We do have some of those. For example, Node can be used to run Javascript server-side. Windowing/tab system can be done with builtin OS controls, and most programming languages have very robust HTTP clients. HTML & CSS are probably the tricky ones, because they're so closely coupled.
That said, the devil in the details is performance/efficiency. All of that has to work very well together.
Netflix has a new live action #Parasyte series. Instead of Migi’s shenanigans, the story takes place in South Korea.
The protagonist is a down-on-her-luck cashier. One of her regular customers is a lunatic who is being goaded into violence by anonymous Internet trolls. She is a target of opportunity for him, but she gets infected by the titular parasite before he finishes the job. And then it gets messy.
I love that #twitter doesn't even tell you "you have to log in to see this" it just acts like a tweet is deleted if you follow a twitter link while logged out
Should Google not delist all it's content for that?
@eniko I’ve made an effort to try to watch Orville, but it’s not going well. People have said that it can be as good the material it’s parodying. And I can definitely see that. But the humor is just too difficult for me to swallow.
One of the reasons why I disliked the 2016 #Doom was that the optimal strategy was to avoid dealing lethal damage with guns. If you used them to their fullest potential, you were punished by withholding health or ammo drops. So instead of a berserker you were narratively meant to be, you had to be careful not to chip off too much of the enemies' health with any strike. Like a sculptor of violence.
We may have wrapped up the funding portion of Project Tapestry, but the real work is just beginning. We offer our sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make it a reality and are excited for what's next. https://blog.iconfactory.com/2024/03/time-to-get-started/
Remember when I made that toot about side marker lamps on cars and a whole bunch of Europeans couldn't imagine a case where they were useful?
Well just tonight I found myself on the passenger's side of a big rig and was grateful the corners of my car had lights so its driver could actually see me in their convex mirrors.
@TechConnectify I’ve always seen it as a feature for the driver of the vehicle, not for others. E.g. if you’re backing up in a dark yard, you really need to see where your corners are.
That said, I have seen some big rigs where the side markers also work as turn signals. When the entire side of the rig starts blinking, you will have no doubt about whether it’s blocking your lane or not.
Do "stick" vacuums have standard chargers or at least standard mounting holes? I want to mount up the charger so I can hang the vacuum up in the closet but I don't want to re-mount every time I get a new vacuum
I know it's just a couple holes in drywall but I'm baby
Found out yesterday that a lot of the pretenders 3D backgrounds from games like Final Fantasy weren't just 3D, they rendered from 3D then did a bunch of paint overs. Which makes so much sense after I heard it but I'd never considered that possibility before
@SirTapTap Maybe a clever optimization that backfired? Many games use simplified logic for entities out of line of sight. E.g. Skipped animations. But if sounds are associated with those animations...
@SirTapTap I think they didn’t get everything out of the winter climate. I liked how in the beginning you have to realize that swimming horizontally under ice for too long can be as dangerous as diving too deep. But I expected to encounter a disorienting white-out blizzard. Or diving into a hole in the ice and then losing track of where it was among the uniform sheet of ice.
@SirTapTap It doesn’t help that the two final areas (one above, one below) are a bit video-gamey in the sense that there’s really only one way in, and you don’t have to come back. So no need for a base there either. The modular truck was enough.
Swedish weather is like, we can get -20. Cold AF. But we put layers on! Safe, cozy! Indoorsy! Put on the blanket, watch a movie! Then we can get -1. Comfy, wintery, beautiful. Go out in nature! Light a fire, grill food! omnomnomnom
...then we get +1. And everything turns into a lethal death trap. Slippery watery ice. Snow and icicles falling off the roofs. Don't mess with +1. Do not!
It's funny what a difference two degrees can make.
@Nifflas And then there’s the weather you get when the temperature oscillates between negative and positive. Every snow bank? Hard as a rock. That gravel spread around to prevent slipping? Sunk into the ice. Maybe you even get a little bit of snow to hide all that.
its kinda weird C# doesn't have an IString interface. i know ReadOnlySpan<char> kinda functions as that interface now, but it's still a little weird to me
With misskeys explosion, I really wish #mastodon 's language feature worked (I guess you have to hash tag a language? Which nobody does) and a "media only follow" existed either for tl or lists
I mostly use misskey as a pixiv replacement but I can't read the text or emoji only posts and tbh even if I could it's not why I followed
@SirTapTap The language is embedded in the message. For example, Ice Cubes autodetects it as you type a new message (or you can choose if it guesses wrong), and you can filter the public feeds to languages you understand.
Sadly, the #GenshinImpact in-game camera tool doesn't pause the game, so any shots taken with it must necessarily contain no action.
The starting area is directly inspired by Breath of the Wild, and I have to say that the frigid climate game mechanics do not live up to the original. Following fire fairies is fine and good, but your opportunities to prepare for the adventure are minimal. No spicy foods or winter clothes, and even fire skills don't generate heat in most situations.
Maybe the real unaligned super intelligence were the corporations we made along the way 🥺 (awful.systems)
