It doesn't really matter if you drive an EV or a gas-guzzling SUV or a weird truck. Cars cause traffic jams. Regardless of their drive train. Less cars is the only solution. Simple.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jwildeboer @lehtimaeki I sold my last car several years back. It was soooo great to have one less thing to worry about.
I live in a car sharing part of Munich in case I need a car, paying per minute for one of the share cars nearby, using the money I save with no car maintenance, tax, fuel or insurance costs. But as I cycle everywhere, I've rarely used the sharing service. It's fun to get an EV when I have guests though.

@cavar @disability Munich's most unique feature is it's beergarden culture. The locals enjoy a cool beer sitting in the shade of chestnut trees in one of the many large beergardens around the city. You'll see families with kids by the playground. You can bring your own picnic. And beer drinkers adopt a slow, relaxed pace. There is rarely any rowdiness or need for security. With 1000-8000 people, there is a calming background hubbub that is very special as the sun goes down.

I wish Google maps had kitchen hours as well as the general opening hours. I had wanted to goto a place that's open until 2300, but calling them, turns out the kitchen shuts at 2000.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@quixoticgeek take a look at where anyone can easily contribute to the map or the opening times. Like the fediverse is by the people, is the equivalent in maps. Where Google, instead of Twitter is the evil empire.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@quixoticgeek great. Me too. So I rarely use Google maps.

Here's the problem.

Recent growth on mastodon.social is greater than the growth rate of November 2022.

But growth on other servers, like mstdn.social, has flatlined.

This has been confirmed to me by numerous Mastodon server admins.

Very concerning!

@zimzat @selea Yes. trying to use an instance as a special interest community is a big fail. It adds an artificial barrier for newbies joining. It fails for people who have more than one interest. It's "centralised" so the elitist "you have to join or we exclude you" again. You get every post from everyone on there, regardless of topic. And you won't get all the top people for that topic, as they already joined elsewhere.

Pick an instance you like the name of, and has a middle number of users.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@wjmaggos @zimzat @selea
Yes that would help people decide.

It would also get the attention on non fediverse people. And lure them in to finally join.

And it would also give a useful username if you are running a club or organisation related to that location.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jupiter_rowland @selea that still fails on all the other counts though.

And is a lot of effort.

Especially if you want to try places out temporarily.

And people might not recognise you from other common interests.

All because the groups function has not yet been released.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@selea @zimzat
I didn't say that. I'll break it down for clarity.

If you don't join that instance, you don't get that local timeline to join in. That's the problem with centralisation.

If you 'do' join the instance, you get 'everything' on the local timeline. Regardless of topic.

For Reddit alternatives on the Fediverse, I prefer over . Here's why:

  1. Navigation: The top navbar on /kbin seems clear and precise, while Lemmy seems noisy

  2. Posts: There's clear separation in /kbin with boxes, while Lemmy posts are not segmented and therefore bleed into each other.

  3. Discoverability: Even though /kbin is used by drastically fewer people than Lemmy, it seems easier to find people across the Fediverse who discuss topics

@fediversenews

Lemmy screenshot in mobile mode

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet @rm4 It's more like a "post group" than a group of users. Where you would "join" and all posts go to the group and not outside it. So it doesn't seem as community centric.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet @rm4 The most important are public groups. Where anyone with an interest in that topic can join. This is where the users soon get to know each other. and how tight communities are made. And troublemakers can be banned.

🚨 MASTODON NOW HAS COMMENT THREADING! 🚨

This makes following a conversation much easier, especially in long threads with many participants.

It's a major usability improvement, and makes Mastodon much easier to use.

https://mastodon.social has comment threading right now, and only on the native web. This feature should be available on other servers and clients with a future update.

See screenshot as an example.

How do you feel about the addition of this feature?

Do Reddit posts scroll up the right way? It's backwards on Mastodon. You see the bottom of the post first and need to keep scrolling to get to the title. Isn't that crazy?

After using Bluesky quite substantially, I'm convinced of quite a few things... 🧵

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet they'll all be like "I wanna be on the main one. Which one's the main one? I don't want to be stuck on some side one on my own".

atomicpoet, to random
@atomicpoet@mastodon.social avatar

I hope Bluesky doesn't succeed.

AT Protocol, I can deal with. Bluesky, I can't.

Everything I hate about Twitter is currently on Bluesky. I hate the memes, the trolls, the algorithms.

I realize my brain doesn't function like most other people. I'm wired a different way.

But generally, when I see an "ayyy lmao", I don't think that bodes well for a social media platform.

Then come join us on https://vancity.social!

We got news, events, art—it’s a neighbourhood party!

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet @mark "Federated groups" are going to save the fediverse for communities. No more having to join different Mastodons for each topic. No more fly-by threads no one will ever find again. No more evil centralisation on those servers.

ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet @mark
Benefits of having your "city".social

  1. The 'user name' is appropriate if you are running an organisation on there.
    I organise a Friday meetup in Muenchen (Munich) using
    @friday
  2. People outside the fediverse could get excited about their own local network and discover the larger fediverse through it.
  3. It could draw people away from joining bloody Mastodon.social.
ianp5a,
@ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

@atomicpoet @mark
But having "local only" posts is right back to centralisation. Sigh!
"You must join our network, or be excluded."
As nasty as Twitter/Facebook.

It’s bizarre that people aren’t taking Bluesky to task for using only ONE node!

ianp5a,

@atomicpoet Surely that is not down to them, but outsiders creating separate nodes. Is the protocol fully open?

    I left my Diaspora server for three months, and when I come back, it's full of racists and anti-vaxx conspiracy theorists.

    Decentralization is not a magic serum that fixes social media.

    It's just one tool.

    ianp5a,
    @ianp5a@mastodon.cloud avatar

    @atomicpoet
    All of Diaspora is full of racists? or just your server? If it's the latter, then a single server is not decentralised. It's the whole network that is decentralised. You don't need to ever see who else is on your pod/instance. They are always randos.

    @GrrlScientist it serves to remind people in the US that these incidents, and many more that no longer even make the news, that the current norms in the US are far away from that of other first world countries. There has been no success in reducing the US gun death figures. In fact it has been getting worse. I'm glad I live somewhere nicer.

    20 y/o Kaylin Gillis was shot & killed for pulling into the wrong driveway.

    @rbreich On the contrary, it is now an everyday occurrence in the USA. Along with mass shootings and school shootings. We look on the US from the outside and say "what a messed up country! Why do they want that?" You realise that all those deaths are optional. A choice. It can be stopped.
