‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

@SorteKanin @thirdBreakfast I guess Amazon and iTunes would be the closest thing, but rights expire for TV shows and movies far more often than they do for games. It’s insane that there are shows from 10 years ago that aren’t legally accessible or are straight-up lost media because the rights expired.

I just finished The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons, and it was really good. My only complaint is that you had to constantly switch items because the Game Boy had a small amount of buttons. I’ve been told that the Link’s Awakening remake on Switch fixes that, but the Oracle games never got that treatment unfortunately.

I love a good 2D Zelda, so it’s a shame that the Breath of the Wild formula is the future of the series from here on out. I’m sure that BOTW and TOTK are good games, but they’re not the same as traditional Zelda.

Steel thy shovel for my latest Switch purchase. Have had it digital for quite a while but wanted to add it to the ever growing physical collection I have.

@SimonSays @OutofPrintArchive I own a physical copy of the Wii U version of NES Remix. It had a different title from the 3DS version (look for NES Remix Pack).

My favorite thing about tech is every few years there's some new overhyped technology that results in a bunch of people picking $thing and founding a company that does $thing with $technology, without any understanding of either, or a single clue what problem they're trying to solve.

They'll literally be like "we're disrupting the dog food industry with ChatGPT" and their product will be like a $99/month subscription service for a LLM that reminds you to remind your dog to eat.

@malwaretech I’ll never forget that one NFT scam that was like “What if doctors gave their patients NFTs that corresponds to their diagnosis” without realizing what a massive privacy violation that would be.

@nanoUFO I feel like I’m the only Xbox owner that doesn’t do Game Pass, and it’s because I can play games when I want and at my own pace when I buy them. I don’t like wanting to play a certain game, but having to play something different because it’s leaving the service in a few days.

Practically everyone in the lower 48 will be experiencing temperatures warmer than average in the days leading up to Christmas. Anomalies in the Midwest will be nearly 25 to 30°F or more

Time to put on some cheesy holiday movies and day dream about snowy landscapes I guess!

@ZLabe Last year in the Midwest had so little snow that I forgot what it was like to live in a place where snowfall is normal in the winter.

@alessandro I’ve always bought the majority of my games during sales or used from websites like eBay, so it doesn’t affect me that much. I considered buying Persona 3 Reload at launch, but I’ll wait for a sale since it’s $70 and SEGA games tend to go on sale pretty quickly.

@Witchfire I used Instagram from 2016-2022, and it consistently got worse. Bugs that you’d expect to be patched quickly lingered for years as features like Stories, Reels, and now Threads get higher priority. DMs would consistently show me messages from 37 weeks ago that were supposed to expire after I viewed them the first time. The last straw was when they moved the Activities tab to the top so that Reels could have its own place at the bottom. I’m not surprised that they don’t even maintain the login page these days.

@neme I remember the advertising for The Marvels was pretty bad. You had commercials that felt like advertisements for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. One ad I got was like “Remember when Tony Stark built his first suit and became Iron Man? The Marvels, in theaters this November”

@Hydrogen I still don’t know how to feel about Dragon Ball Daima. The animation looks beautiful, but I’m not big on the GT-esque setup of everyone getting turned into children. Maybe I’ll warm up to it over time, but I worry that this is gonna be a Persona Q deal where it’s a prequel that can’t have any impact on the series out of fear of overwriting the continuity, especially since this was specifically made for the 40th anniversary of the series.

Every. Single. Time. Really hope this dude's still getting paid. (imgflip.com)

Seriously. The only time I listen to FM radio is when I take my wife’s car to get an oil change. So maybe a total of twenty minutes driving time once every six months or so. Every single time, this song comes on. I don’t get it. It was a one hit wonder from like 25 years ago. How is it still getting that much airplay?!

it_is_soup_time,
@it_is_soup_time@techhub.social avatar

@ilovededyoupiggy For me, it’s always Mr. Brightside by The Killers. I feel like they’re always playing that song on the radio, regardless of the time or place.

@ericbomb I used to watch a YouTuber called Skip the Tutorial, and he would make these challenge run videos, such as Punch Out Wii without dodging. This later extended to modded Minecraft runs, and this led to the whole channel just becoming Minecraft trivia videos since these came out during a massive nostalgia boom for the game. Sometimes I look back to see if he’s made any more challenge runs, but nope.

    Suddenly I'm wondering something.

I call disposable plastic grocery bags "Jewel bags" after the Chicagoland grocery store chain. I don't even shop there all that much these days, but any such bag is still a "Jewel bag" in my head.

Anybody else do this? Like, not Jewel specifically but your local store chain?

(Oh and, fun fact, an industry term for that kind of bag is T-shirt bag, despite it resembling a tank top if anything)

    it_is_soup_time,

@Kramgr @user224 I love getting DVDs from the library. With streaming services, I constantly worry that I’m wasting my money when I’m not constantly using them, but borrowing from the library removes that anxiety while still having access to movies from several different studios.

@1Transient During a time where I temporarily used Reddit (around 2018), I would repost my memes from Instagram to some subreddits. One of the mods got upset at the Instagram watermark and banned me from the subreddit. Pretty hypocritical considering some of that subreddit’s most upvoted posts were Twitter screenshots.
