Side project: Wife's favourite watch broke down, not going to pay 219 euro for another Mondaine that runs a 30 euro module inside 🤷‍♂️

@ives@mstdn.social avatar

@peturdainn What's the plan to fix it? Can you get hold of a replacement module that would fit? Are they generic enough?

I don't understand the point of an NDA if you sign it with a false name and signature. Anyone who can explain?

For a bit of Sunday happiness & silliness: tell me about some a book you've recently excitedly told someone about and why!

I've talked about Erin Meyer's "Culture Map" because it opened my eye to a lot of intercultural interactions I have in both, my everyday and my work life.

And about Marcin Wicha's "Things I Didn't Throw Out" because it made me laugh and cry at the same time + made me fall in love with Daunt books because I would not have found out about the book without them.

@vicgrinberg 'A Brief History of Seven Killings' by Marlon James, because I loved the Jamaican Patois so much. It takes a while to get into it but after that you'll read it as if it was plain English. And besides that it's just a really good and well-written book.
It came up in conversation because a friend had a very similar experience watching 'Top Boy' on Netflix.

As a kid I got stung by these a looot and indeed after a little while you’re basically ‘immune’

@stux What also helps is to pinch really hard when you pick them. Sounds counterintuitive but it does work!

Vraag me af of ik Oppenheimer moet proberen.

ives,
@ives@mstdn.social avatar

@philipdutre Was ook m'n hoofd aan het schudden toen ik dit op het nieuws zag. Die samenvatting is maar een nevenproduct van het verwerken van het cursusmateriaal. Die eerste verwerking kan je niet overslagen.

A Grinder PSA.

I know James Hoffmann, in a few videos now, heavily suggests doing the RDT (ross droplet technique) on coffee in single dose grinders; indeed, in one video, he heavily suggests doing this 3x as much to get, as he says 'better anti static results". He even demos it on a DF64 Gen 2 in his Best grinders under £500.

But he's wrong. At least with grinders equipped with a plasma generator.

Doing the RDT on grinders with a plasma generator (like the DF64 Gen 2) WILL GUM UP the works inside around the plasma coil, making it 100% ineffective, and increase the overall static issues.

Don't RDT any grinder with a plasma coil.

Got this direct from TWO grinder manufacturers. I've been told one is trying to get James to do a new video "recanting" the advice. It's causing them a lot of service calls.

ives,

@coffeegeek @coffee @espresso 3x as much? Might as well add hot water to the beans in your grinder for instant pourover.

small discussion here, resulting in this poll about C header dependencies:

if a header file depends on another header, do you include it before it in de source file, or do you include it in the header that depends on it?

ives,
@ives@mstdn.social avatar

@peturdainn In the header file. But make sure you use include guards in your header files.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Include_guard

ives,
@ives@mstdn.social avatar

@peturdainn I wouldn't do that. For complex projects, that list in the source file can get rather long. And what do you do if a header changes and no longer depends on another one? Do you edit all the files that include it to remove the include there as well? Sounds quite bothersome.
