The house showing was at 11:30, so we took Hammy out at 11:20. We checked our Ring cam. Nobody showed up... until noon. Sigh. So more Hammy walking, for another half hour. We live in a hilly nieghorhood, so ... well... We're beat.

Heard a few nice things about the back/front yards and neighborhood on the Ring, but that's it. ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿผ

I havenโ€™t encountered a single vegetable-centered dish at any of the Thai, Japanese, Malaysian restaurants Iโ€™ve visited in LA. It is possible to eat differently from the rest of the world (re a conversation a few days ago about always having to order veggies)

(To be clear, I agree everyone should eat veggies if they want! But also that, there are many cuisines which simply arenโ€™t vegetable-centered)

(I had a very large raw papaya salad, lots of fiber but also enough chilli to kill a bear)

@skinnylatte add Philippines to that list. Amazingly, my spouse, @czds was raised vegetarian there. Kare-kare without meat, with bagoโ€™ong made with fermented tofu, black beans, and savories rather than fried shrimp. We added lobster and oyster mushroom to her motherโ€™s recipe to get a bit of shrimp flavor. Ordering mixed vegetables in a Filipino restaurant invariably means asking that they hold the ground pork, and patis (fish sauce) is a standard in many dishes.

I want to see absolutely no sensible and practical advice here. What programming language should I start vaguely and in a chill way teaching myself if I just want to experience something fun or elegant or interesting in and of itself, assuming I have no goal for using it to do anything really (outside of learning)

@grimalkina yes and no, it is a programming language primarily for statistics and manipulation of data stored as data frames, and version of the older, proprietary language S, and written in C, FORTRAN and R

@GottaLaff Very interesting technology for utility scale energy storage. The greater the mix of renewable energy sources and storage methods, at both Microgrids and Utility grids scales, the better the chances for future generations to have a comfortably livable planet

It feels like the endless debate about โ€œare LLMs thinkingโ€ largely misses the point. A better question is โ€œare LLMs useful?โ€ And if they are, we should understand their strengths and weaknesses at different tasks.

Endless pontificating on the meaning of โ€œintelligenceโ€ is fun though. I suggest pairing it with a good bourbon. But once you sober up, go build useful things with useful tools.

@Cmastication yes, and โ€œusefulโ€ needs to consider costs, both in terms of finances and in terms of environmental and human impact. SLMs especially when coupled with RAG, knowledge graphs and even DAG/causal inference seem just as useful at less cost @brook

Update on house hunting trip for those who are asking:

Weโ€™ll be in BC tomorrow btw.

Turns out the photos of the house were misrepresenting that it had a garage. The doors were there, but behind them were 2 rooms where the garage was. The agent put out a note to all agents, but we didnโ€™t find out til we were in Oregon.

The listing agent got a ton of complaints.

Sons/agent saw that the house had other flaws, so our hunt continues.

This is all for the best. ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

We may put offer on a house in Canada that we have yet to see except in photos & vid.

Our kids are up there to see it Sat. when it lists for real, getting lots of interest, it will sell & we still need to drive up, which takes 3 days (we don't fly w Hammy), so we gotta move FAST.

FYI: Finding a house in Port Moody is needle/haystack, so it's crunch time. Our agent =๐Ÿฅ‡

  • cuts $1.5 trillion from Social Security
  • raises Medicare costs & cuts caps on pharma fees
  • cuts Medicaid, ACA/Obamacare & the Childrenโ€™s Health Insurance Prog by $4.5 trillion over 10 years
  • creates $5.5 trillion in tax cuts for the rich and corporations
  • eliminates all clean energy tax incentives
  • raises Social Security Retirement age to 69
