I spotted this young (you can tell by the length of its beak) kingfisher (Alcedo atthis, 🇩🇪 Eisvogel, 🇵🇱 zimorodek) far from the river and its parents, waiting to be fed. Although it can fly, it hasn't learned to hunt yet and is dependent on its parents for food. But the parents already have new chicks, which have priority for feeding. The start of an independent life is hard for birds.

This is an IOCREST-brand USB to RS-232 serial adapter, which I bought from a seller on AliExpress. It arrived in exactly the same time as an identical eBay listing said it would, for literally half the price - if eBay is still your default go-to for weird stuff like this, keep in mind dropshippers are probably fleecing you.

This adapter contains an FTDI chipset, not the much cheaper CH340, and it's time to see if this is the reason I couldn't get serial mice working natively on Windows 10.

And, yep - with Windows 10 told to enable serial mouse detection on boot, all you need is the right kind of adapter installed and a serial mouse plugged in when you boot up. Here's the FTDI-derived one working with my Microsoft Home serial mouse - you can see the adapter blinking to say it's receiving data when I move it around.

So, question: Can I get some suggestions for software / tips and tricks for recording and reviewing raw data coming off a serial port? I'm a very long way from trying to reverse-engineer a novel protocol myself, but that's the eventual goal, and the next step I'd like to take is compare what I'm seeing coming out of a serial mouse with documentation online to make sure I really understand what's going on and how all this works.

Uh... ? boosts welcome.

Went to the camera store a couple weeks ago and there was an as-is Rolleiflex 6006 setup for $500. Three lenses, 50mm, 80mm and 150mm, spare film back, batteries that are completely dead, charger and case. Even if it weren't working it would be ok as a fixer upper. But I managed to get a new battery (3D printed modern replacement) and it all seems to be working great.

Productive day.

I've come to a point where I've started dreading making any changes in my random level generation code, since it's hard to assert at a quick glance that everything still works correctly, so I programmed a small tool to preview maps.

It's not particularly pretty, but hey, it does its job. Should be WAY faster to debug potential map errors and weird outliers.

Looking to implement prefab rooms next and this should help to figure out if positioning works correctly.

Adding support for prefab rooms was pretty easy actually. Now I can mix random rooms with hand-made ones. It'll get more interesting when I'll add erosion, cavernous rooms, underground rivers and other features.

Also an in-game screenshot, where an epic battle is happening between our (aptly-named) hero and a small flying creature known as "vesp", just to underline that this is not just some theory, these prefab rooms can already be witnessed within the game!

An @ symbol representing our hero named Testing has hit a vesp for 4 damage in a small room within room, a new prefab-kind of room I've just implemented in the game.
