Sooo, @rash's recent toot makes me want to put all my stuff in Euro containers! :D

So, I'm curious – what experiences have y'all made with Euroboxes? Which sizes do you like? Where do you put them? How do you label them? What has worked well for you? 🤓

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@blinry @rash I use these at home
https://www.solentplastics.co.uk/20-ltr-euronorm-clear-plastic-stacking-container/
along with the 300x200 ones, but they don't have those in clear.

Smaller stuff goes in A4 and A5 polypropylene boxes.

I label them with a Brother handheld labeller, a laminating one not a thermal one.

At work, we use grey Euroboxes up to half pallet size for basically everything, and rack them on pallets on pallet racking.

We don't use many lids.

The only exception is camping, where I use Really Useful Boxes, which are rainproof.

How does your country handle ?

It is a very convoluted and captilism-cursed system here in the US.

My government colleagues surprised me today when they said they had never looked into how recycling was run in other countries 🙈

So I'd like to know the ins and outs.

How does the pipeline work from home bin to finished recycled product, if you know?

Boosts appreciated! 🔁

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@dyani In this bit of the UK, we have kerbside pickup provided by the council for 4 bins:
Food waste
Cardboard
Glass, metal, plastic food packaging
Landfill

Not sure where it goes after it leaves the kerb, though.

Had a Freedom of Information request rejected because all the documents are "in a packing case", and accessing them would exceed the cost limit.

They invited me to the archives in person. Should I pack my crowbar. I am so excited.

The warehouse scene from the end of raiders of the lost ark, showing packing cases in stacks far into the distance.

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@jonty I would probably pack two or three.

A mysterious golden orb that may be an egg laid by an unknown sea creature has been discovered on the ocean floor off the coast of Alaska.

The smooth object with an intriguing hole at the centre was found at a depth of about two miles by a remote-controlled explorer.

Say I have line of sight to a river and would like to monitor how its height is changing over time, is there anything that'll just bounce some sort of signal off it to tell me distance?

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@mjg59 How far away is it, and what's the angle to the horizontal, and what's the height range ?

I'd try a lidar first, but I have no idea if you'd get enough signal return off the water surface.

So, if for the sake of some art, you wanted to get a 4m high inflatable made from a custom patten, who would you ask? Basically a giant inflatable anatomically accurate tooth.

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@rc2014 @Dtl There's a whole industry around custom advertising inflatables. Big companies https://www.digital-inflatables.ch/en/ and little ones https://studiosouffle.com/ and a lot of Chinese ones. I don't know the market well enough to recommend one. If you wanted it to be robotic, moving and interactive, we (http://airgiants.co.uk) would be happy to chat about it.

I've always wanted to build a compass belt, which indicates where north is using vibrations!

Today, I got the very first prototype working: A setup that vibrates when you point your smartphone north! 🧭

I point my smartphone in different directions – when it is in a 1/8th range of north, an attached microcontroller activates a vibration motor. A magnetic compass is shown for reference.

jarkman,
@jarkman@chaos.social avatar

@blinry Nice I built something similar in a hat once, but it turns out having vibrate motors on your head is maddening. A belt feels much more sensible.

I got my first ever pair of glasses, and omg my computer screen now looks like it's in HD!

The optician said my prescription was so minor it wasn't worth bothering with unless I had a load of eye strain. I didn't notice any eye strain but I have been increasing text sizes a little over the last few years, so I thought I'd give it a try with a £20 pair. I'm so glad I did.

I can still see my screen perfectly fine without, but I'm definitely less headachey after wearing them!
