I encouraged my team to use ChatGPT as a code review tool, optionally, and now I feel quite dirty.

@machias huh? Why suggest that? Am I missing something?

jeffpc,

@machias Interesting.

I’d certainly stay away from spicy autocomplete….err I mean AI… The IP related ambiguity of the output’s license alone is enough that (1) I don’t want to expose myself to the risks for my fun (open source) code, and (2) there’s no way in hell the legal department at work would like us uploading out Special Sauce to a 3rd party without a fancy contract.

I was watching a letsplay of The Longest Drive and they mentioned GPS: I wonder how long GPS will keep functioning after a civilizational collapse?

Because while yeah, eventually the satellite orbits will decay, but I imagine the lack of updates will kill it faster

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@foone I don’t recall the GPS details but updates are done several times a day. You can see the current GNSS “info” age on https://galmon.eu/. Things get inaccurate pretty quickly. IIRC, there are checks that mark the signals as unreliable. Regardless, I fully expect that it’d be a matter of days before receivers would “lose signal”.

After I replicated @BatchDrake I2C over coax setup (https://mastodon.radio/@jeffpc/109425277089482499), I wondered if the 's outputs are weak. Tonight, I finally got a few minutes to try out a similar thing on a . I fed the SPI clock output through the same 30.5m coax. It looks quite good!

This time, the setup was a bit different, the connections were:

AVR -> ~1m long coax -> T adapter to channel 3 (cyan) -> long coax -> T adapter to channel 4 (green) -> 30dB attenuator as a 50ohm load

The joy of living outside the Eastern Time Zone in today's American business world. 06:00 meetings!

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@chris @machias I’ve done that too - working from MA with the rest of the team in Germany and Finland. As a developer, it was actually kind of nice to not be distracted most of the day. The occasional early meeting was tolerable (the team understood that it was early for me and so they tried to accommodate) and I got to end my day much earlier than 5pm.

Hm... why does my 10.6MHz pierce oscillator oscillate at 44.25kHz? 🤔

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@gsuberland Interesting observation that the frequency is such a round multiple. I'll let the frequency counter warm up and get a more accurate measurements.

I'm on a breadboard. I thought I'd get away with it for a proof of concept before I make a PCB. I expect some instability or lack of oscillation, but not 240x division.

The crystal specifies 30pF, and if I did the math right 47pF caps + the '14 input/output capacitance should do.

Amusingly, if I remove C1, it oscillates just fine.

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@gsuberland Ok, the frequency counter says 10.5961MHz vs. 44.4020kHz. Which is 238.6402x. So, being 240x was just dumb luck.

The conclusion is, I think, that this circuit works well enough on a breadboard and will likely work on a PCB. I can test the next stage on the breadboard using a signal generator instead.

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@gsuberland I tried replacing both 47p with 30p and I got ~600kHz.

I definitely agree with breadboard capacitance being hard to quantify. Doing 10MHz on one is definitely asking for a bit more than is healthy :)

The datasheet (LFXTAL012945Bulk by IQD) lists 30pF as the "load capacitance". 🤷

Day 172 of - Yes, I am crazy enough to make this. Well, at least when LCSC gets my favourite RGB LEDs back in stock.

Presenting the Kilopixel rack display, a 1U RGB display for your rack.

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@ve7fim I'm curious how this kind of error happens. Missing a connection seems to be a reasonably common problem based on my mastodon feed but I'd expect the design tool to yell about unused/unconnected terminals. Am I missing something? Is DRC not as capable as I assume it to be?

Context: I'm going to order my first PCB in the next few days, and even though they are cheap it is a bit nerve wrecking not knowing if I screwed up the board design in some way.

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@ve7fim Hmm... I just did a quick experiment and KiCad's DRC complained about a missing connection. Maybe my experiment is too simple to make the DRC not notice the missing connection.

I though I’d learn code and programming at the same time. I started with an ATmega48P gating a 555 generating a tone. But that’s boring. So, I extended my code to generate messages toggling D#6 on and off.

A left hand in the lower left corner is seen holding iambic paddles. The rest of the frame is close to the display area of a mid- to late-90's consumer MIDI keyboard. The hand is seen alternating between actuating the two paddles changing the program on the keyboard.

American healthcare is the best in the world!

  1. it's tied to your job
  2. how much you pay depends on each employer
  3. it costs anywhere from $0 to $25,000 annually to insure your family
  4. you get TONS of mail after each and every visit and you learn how to ignore the first three "bills" that arrive until the "real" bill shows up of what you actually pay
  5. yes you pay for things beyond the money you pay for healthcare in general
  6. keeping your prescriptions current is now your half-time job

hey could the criminals who somehow converted an application logic bug in a spam filter to “you have to throw the hardware in a shredder to be sure” please publish their own blog post about this https://www.rapid7.com/blog/post/2023/06/08/etr-cve-2023-2868-total-compromise-of-physical-barracuda-esg-appliances/

jeffpc,
@jeffpc@mastodon.radio avatar

@0xabad1dea @lambda At least in the past, a lot of Barracuda's customers where on the less tech savvy side. So, as fascinating as a firmware-level issue would be, it might be a less exciting scenario and the "recall" is simply to make sure the mitigation is done right - in other words, trying to maintain/rescue the brand.
