I enjoy things, but also stuff.

Professionally unprofessional, I enjoy making stuff involving #electronics and shop tools. I have dabbled in photography and am currently making sourdough bread nearly every day.

I also like #radio - you can find that stuff at https://mastodon.radio/@aj6iy though

Good.

But as I've said before, roid rage isn't a real thing. It's not.

I've never taken steroids. I don't need them. But a lot of people I train with do take steroids and other PEDs.

Angry violent little men want to commit violence, but can't shake anything at a buck fifty. So they take steroids.

https://www.nydailynews.com/2024/04/29/nypd-union-sues-adams-administration-over-new-zero-tolerance-policy-on-steroid-use-among-cops/

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@mekkaokereke with respect, steroids can absolutely trigger a psychotic reaction. One of my kids has a medical condition whose first line of treatment is a steroid; when given to them (at 10 years old!) it triggered a (thankfully minor) psychotic reaction

...which is not to say "roid rage" is a valid defense for anything.

You should call your House member's office and demand an answer to this question:

"Why are you trying to ban TikTok or force its sale on privacy grounds while you do absolutely nothing about rampant privacy abuses by U.S. companies -- which are free to sell private information to anyone with a checkbook?"

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@dangillmor I just called Nancy Pelosi's constituent line and asked this question. (well, paraphrased)

Thanks!

My new favorite band (Hop Along) has a song that demonstrates excellent use of America's most underrated guitar chord, the sublime and very centering C/G.

That chorus. Man.

@hotdogsladies almost. It's actually a D/D in dropped-D tuning

been trying to list every piece of state in your git repository that you need to be careful about. So far I have:

  • your current branch
  • if you're in detached HEAD state
  • staged files
  • unstaged & untracked files
  • whether or not you're in the middle of a merge (or rebase, or cherry-pick)
  • if you're in the middle of a rebase, which stage of the rebase you're at exactly
  • what you have in the stash (since stash entries are deleted when you stash pop)

what did I miss?

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@b0rk any other worktrees you have checked out (git worktree list) I had been hoping to use worktrees to reduce the number of copies of the entire repo I need kicking around, and this was a thing that bit me. (I have since stopped trying to use the worktree feature for this and other reasons)

I put together a quick #embedded project this weekend using #zephyr RTOS - and now I can send button events over #BLE to my #HomeAssistant instance!

Code is here for those interested, and should work on most boards supported by Zephyr:

https://github.com/jeffrizzo/bthome-zephyr

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@holgerschurig it's absolutely needed for running it on Nordic and STM32 boards! My main reason for starting the project was to use an Adafruit nrf52840 feather I've got... I'm currently playing with power management and have it using a bit less than a milliamp.

The smart home madness continues. Having sensors and data about every aspect of your home is both awesome and overwhelming. Anyone have suggestions for good Home Assistant cards or layouts to help fix this mess?

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@mattferrell I don't have any specific suggestions for you (unfortunately) but as someone who is going through something similar, I'd love if you passed along any good suggestions you got! :)

Yesterday's toots about serial/parallel hybrid cars vs. trains are really pushing me to make a video about hybrid car tech.

Here's the thing lots of people don't seem to know: the most efficient hybrid powertrains also do the trick of keeping the engine at optimum RPM/efficiency but the engine can still contribute directly to the spinning of the wheels

It's the technique that makes diesel-electric efficient but even more so because it largely skips conversion losses.

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@TechConnectify as someone with a hybrid who only marginally understands what's up, I wholeheartedly support the notion of a video.

This is the taxi labeled "Starfruit". Around 9:45 AM this morning, I watched it:

  • block the right lane of Octavia Boulevard in a way that forced 5-10 cars to change lanes and go around
  • just before I had to go around, start driving again
  • make the left onto Fell in a manner which, had there been anyone at all in the car, I might have thought the driver had been drinking a bit

I'm not a fan of using our streets as a training ground for these companies subsidized by our taxes.

@futurebird my problem started in 1982, when our Atari wouldn't turn on. When we figured out the power brick had burned out, my Dad lectured us for what seemed like months over the $25 or so it cost us to replace back then...

Suddenly I'm wondering something.

I call disposable plastic grocery bags "Jewel bags" after the Chicagoland grocery store chain. I don't even shop there all that much these days, but any such bag is still a "Jewel bag" in my head.

Anybody else do this? Like, not Jewel specifically but your local store chain?

(Oh and, fun fact, an industry term for that kind of bag is T-shirt bag, despite it resembling a tank top if anything)

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@TechConnectify nope. "Plastic grocery bag" if I refer to them at all

jeffrizzo,

@patsytheshark it's pretty straightforward as long as you can connect it to a computer. Most OSes have a 'secure wipe' or 'secure erase' feature these days. Might take a few hours depending on the size. On a Mac I think it's in "disk utility", on Windows I'd have to look. On Linux I'd use dd :)

Are you finding Mastodon to be less vibrant/active?

I’m worried that we are not getting as much engagement on our Ukraine war reporting as we used to.

We’re trying to decide which social media platforms to continue posting on, given how much effort it takes to replicate across all of them.

If you want to send a signal to us that we should keep posting here, will you sign up for our newsletter? http://Counteroffensive.substack.com

I’m only asking Mastodon users today so we can gauge impact.

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@timkmak I'm already signed up but you should know that you posted the sign up link with a capital 'H' in 'http' and so at least the app I'm using (official Mastodon) doesn't know how to handle it
