I know I've said I don't agree with doing call out posts. But this is a call out and each of you knows who you are.

@CKJohnsonBk @futurebird weeps in despair, looking at my giant sack of misc electrical wires and adapters

What if I need them??

What if I'm not disposing of them in a responsible way???

CKJohnsonBk,

@Rhube @futurebird EXACTLY. What if I find the device it goes with and really need access to the device but I can’t plug it in because I thoughtlessly threw away my bag of adapters and no one makes them anymore?????? 😭 😭 😭

bornach,
@bornach@fosstodon.org avatar

@CKJohnsonBk @Rhube @futurebird

I've used the adjustable voltage regulation circuit from one of my broken wall wort mains adapters to drop the voltage down on another adapter that outputs a fixed 12V DC. This is useful for powering lower voltage electronics.

I also use DC-DC buck converter modules from EBay/Amazon/Aliexpress to power piranha LED arrays that illuminate my work area, and to resurrect an old external harddrive enclosure whose 5V power rail had failed

@futurebird I might be mis-remembering the Marie Kondo quote, but isn’t it something like, “You better keep everything, because someday it just might spark joy.”

@futurebird It doesn't help that the AC adapters are usually only labelled with the name of their third-party manufacturer while also only being usable on one device - so if you find one around the house, you don't know what it's for, so you end up keeping it just in case.
As an aside, I also have a few devices I can't use because I can't find the correct adapters for them...

McD1979,

@airadam @futurebird that gives me an idea…I need to print labels for all adapters that say what they go to

@Tergenev @futurebird Oh you got that photo at my home! But where are the other 4 tubs? 😜😆😂😳

Tergenev,
@Tergenev@mastodon.social avatar

@cobalt @futurebird I suppose it's the difference between a maker and a hoarder. When they start falling apart, I throw 'em out. I probably have a couple more sitting around, but nope, this is most of mine.

cobalt,
@cobalt@awscommunity.social avatar

@Tergenev @futurebird Ah but have the sold Skool mind that if I toss a part out, what if I need it someday! I have a treasure trove - how could I waste it! Hehehehe

intothewestaway,

@cobalt @Tergenev @futurebird

I have this horrible addiction to parts. The worst thing is the intermittent reinforcement of finding a use for a part (even if it is only every 5 years) which ensures I keep hoarding.

Virginicus,

@Tergenev Does anyone make an adapter to turn an old Dell power brick to USB-C?

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@Virginicus @Tergenev oh my god, can you imagine Targus selling something to convert any given barrel connector to a USB-C power delivery that only provides one voltage?

Virginicus,

@c0dec0dec0de @Tergenev I guess you’re right. The downside of a universal connector is that people will plug it into any damned thing.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@Virginicus @Tergenev just a brick with a bunch of barrel jacks and a pair of dials to select input voltage and current.

c0dec0dec0de,
@c0dec0dec0de@hachyderm.io avatar

@Virginicus @Tergenev Dell, in particular, loved to put a third connector into their power connectors and refuse to let you use anything that didn’t transmit the right signal on it (where use means make full use of the computer).

@futurebird Donate them to a local hackerpace or makerspace. "I need an X Volt power supply" is a common statement in these spaces

johnlehet,
@johnlehet@mas.to avatar

@futurebird Believe it or not, Today I need a power transformer I can't find. We put away our big, big, big flatscreen TV (which is an LG computer monitor we keep in the livingroom) during a long home renovation. Finally broke out the monitor to watch a movie. No transformer/ AC adapter. None in my collection will fit.

roknrol,

@futurebird I feel seen.

valdelane,
@valdelane@mas.to avatar

@futurebird Ha! My old power supply bin pays out 2-3 times a year to replace dead ones, which encourages me to keep hoarding.

hermannus,
@hermannus@stegodon.nl avatar

@futurebird time to switch to DC.

CorvidCrone,
@CorvidCrone@kolektiva.social avatar

@futurebird ok, but when I got rid of mine, I had to then find and purchase a new power cord for my printer 😔

Gordon,

@futurebird

Top tip when you are retiring stuff in favour of your new shiny.

Whilst you can still match the power supply to your previous shiny.

Identify a normal neighbour who will accept your donation and pass it on to those who will make use of it.

Don't forget to include the other bits that will be needed to make your old shiny work.

🥥 Guilty as charged!
Not only do I have an extensive charger collection, I have virtually zero recollection of what gizmos many of the chargers were originally intended for.
I also have enough gizmos for which I can't find chargers that I am mystified by the whole mess. 🥥

@futurebird And they are righ!, Brought a box of old cables to the recycling yard and only a few days later I needed to fix hardware issues and instantly remembered where I put the blue cables. 🤡 Now I have new blue cables that don't work plus unsolved hardware issues.

aethervision,

@futurebird Somewhat ironic how adaptors can’t adapt.

@futurebird Dude!
That's a nice collection.
They're a required collection of power supplies for the electronics hobbiest.
Also how did you get a picture of my garage?

jeffrizzo,
@jeffrizzo@sfba.social avatar

@futurebird my problem started in 1982, when our Atari wouldn't turn on. When we figured out the power brick had burned out, my Dad lectured us for what seemed like months over the $25 or so it cost us to replace back then...

the5thColumnist,
@the5thColumnist@mstdn.ca avatar

@futurebird
with me it's cables,

nina,

@futurebird I'm not that bad, I will eventually throw those I know I don't have the device to anymore out.
Also, if they are any good, useful Voltage, not acting weird, and sufficient power for what I plan, I might even use them in my electronics projects.

Particularly 5V, 9V and 12V adapters will on occasion get a second life like that.
