Today, I learned that diversity, equality and inclusivity is apparently a bad thing, and will kill a project? (From the comments under my latest news talking about ’s 5 year plan).

So, wanting people to feel comfortable contributing to a project is bad and woke now? Serisouly, what do they put in these people’s water? They’re going insane.

Honestly, Nick, I've had to stop reading the comments in your videos, and just engage with you here on the wooly mammoth. YT comments in general have always been awful, but they seem to have hit a new low recently.

To the topic at hand, Linux has always had a blind spot when it comes to DEI officially, but it has always had a diverse group of users, at least since I started using in around 97-98.

Translator for an agency that I have been working with seems to be using some sort of non-MS word processing software. I get the preference for open source stuff, but there is a reason why Word is the standard for this sort of thing...

Whatever they use randomly spits out extra spaces and protected content fields. This breaks the format throughout the document. Initially, I had thought that the client had been protecting certain phrases... but it was not the case.

There are a few other opensource office suites, but LibreOffice seems to be the most widely used and supported. I'd drop Office 365 in a heartbeat if it wasn't necessary for my job.

For personal stuff though, that's what I use on my MacBook Pro, since it runs my special blend Linux Mint XFCE.

I once made the mistake of answering "なし" when customs asked me if I had anything to declare. The look on the agent's face. And then I had to say, no, no, I mean nothing to declare, nothing special, only normal clothes and personal devices and stuff. And then we both had a good laugh. Sitcom material.

Today at work, I foolishly clicked the “try new Outlook” button, hoping for a new version less shitty than the old version.

After it installed, it DEMANDED I copy emails to the Microsoft cloud, which violates our data protection policies. No option for local only as far as I could tell.

Luckily I was just able to remove it and go back to the old version with having to contact IT ☺️

Ah, yeah, @ChrisJValdez and I were yukking it up over in Nacogdoches at Stephen F. Austin in 02.

I joke I visited a friend at UT for Spring Break in 2003 and just never left. Slightly overstated, but basically true. I just went there to hang out with him, but ended up realising I should have gone there in the first place. I'm just lucky to have found a last-minute back door in, on the merits I shouldn't have been able to even do that much--competition being what it was.

My experience as a union organiser: there are only two classes, the labor class and the capitalist class. The blue-collar/white-collar distinction is a created one to sow division between workers.

If you trade labor for wages, you are working class. Whether that is coding or factory line assembly. And management doesn't view you as differently as they want you to view yourself.

Re-watching Star Trek: Enterprise given the references to it in Strange New Worlds and it is honestly better than I remember.

One thing I really like is how arrogant and duplicitous the Vulcans are portrayed. Between TOS and VOY, Vulcans are largely portrayed positively, their claimed enlightenment taken at their word.

Not so in Enterprise. It also explains some of the attitude that Spock faces in TOS, particularly from McCoy.
