This is my new favorite thing! Artist Ememem takes cracks in sidewalks, walls and other urban environments and fills them with colorful, mosaic tiles. The results are just joyous. Boy, I really love this. I could see myself doing stuff like this after I retire, maybe I can apprentice. 😂

@gedeonm The mosaics certainly look more durable. Lego's not really designed to withstand the elements. My kids loved finding some though. And it's something everyone can participate in, unlike the mosaics.

If you want to help lower its carbon footprint, I've filed a TON of issues to convert form requests in browser tests to API calls: child issues of https://www.drupal.org/project/drupal/issues/3305376

@jonhicks Crucial mistake though: you put only the sausage on the barbeque, not the sausage already inside the breadroll!

@pcambra I can't log in with the mastodon app. Is something wrong with the drupal.community server? (I've even tried sending myself the password to make sure it's not a typo.)

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@pcambra Yes, it's been like this ever since I installed the mastodon iOS app about 3 weeks ago.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar
joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@pcambra Oh but https://drupal.community/auth/sign_in in Safari, on my iPad, produces the same error as within apps. I am pretty sure I am using the same password - just held up my iPad next to my Mac and compared the two saved passwords. I'm going to change my password to something simple to make sure I'm not still making a mistake. But is there any reason iOS Safari might not work?

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@e0ipso I'd need to create a new account on a difference instance though?

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@e0ipso Ok it worked. I think there might be a but in the mastodon app where it needs you to be signed in to the browser beforehand. I can reproduce by logging out in Safari, the logging out of the app, then trying to log in with the app.

Like many people my age, I can recite the TV ads of my childhood verbatim. I just realized that my kid won’t have that. And isn’t that glorious?

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@ben It's Youtube ads instead. My 8yo can recite 'Plus 500, it's trading with a plus' even though he has no idea what it's about.

One of the most heartbreaking things about men is that, the more they want to bone you, the fewer of your jokes they laugh at.

Absolutely guts me.

I see it so often in sexy spaces - funny women having their hilarious thoughts/witty turns of phrase stonewalled by horny men who fling compliments about their tits without acknowledging their wit at the same time. Devastating. Pearls before swine.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@girlonthenet 🙁 And meanwhile, about 50% of Hinge profiles I see have in their requirements a man who 'makes them laugh', like it's a one-way performance.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@Stoat @girlonthenet Sure, but they could put 'I'll fall for you if: we make each other laugh', or 'if we have the same sense of humour' rather than 'if you make me laugh', which (and to be fair, it could be my high allergy to gender performance) sounds like an expectation for a very lopsided gendered dynamic.

The thing that nags at me with the endless “the state should run the railways!" or “we need more private firms in railways!” fight is the ideological nature of it.

Some state railways aren't very good
Some private railway firms are likewise terrible

And yes, the opposite is true as well - some state railways are excellent, and some private railways very good too

Sorry if the world doesn't fit your neat ideological frame

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@jon It's ideological because railways shouldn't be run for profit. Therefore there's no reason for private firms to run them.

Once again for the people at the back. The purpose of public transport is to transport the public. Making money from doing so is a secondary purpose at best.

Noone talks about the profitability of the motorway network. So why do we do the same for public transport?

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@quixoticgeek Also schools, libraries, hospitals.

has anyone seen a really good analysis of the problems with git's command line UI? Would love to read it. for example:

  • git checkout is dangerous and has too many different jobs (though git switch is trying to fix that!)
  • for a tool that's supposed to make changes easy to undo, you actually need to learn a LOT of ways to undo

(not looking for git tutorials, explanations of git’s underlying model, or explanations of why you think git's UI is actually good, just an analysis of the problems)

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@penguin42 @b0rk Yup, this - the different commands are inconsistent. And 'remote remove' is just asking for typos!

Crell, to php

9 says to stop using assertObjectHasAttribute() in favor of assertObjectHasProperty(). But the latter doesn't exist in PHPUnit 9, only in PHPUnit 10.

Am I missing something obvious? Because that's not how deprecation warnings are supposed to work...

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@Crell Yeah... I filed an issue about that problem, and I didn't understand the response from the maintainer: https://github.com/sebastianbergmann/phpunit/issues/5448 Maybe you'll have more luck!

if you just stopped being scared of the command line in the last year or three — what helped you?

(no need to reply if you don’t remember, or if you’ve been using the command line comfortably for 15 years — this question isn’t for you :) )

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@santiago @sodimel @b0rk Took me years to start using CTRL+R - lack of documentation and horrendous UI - what on earth does 'reverse-i-search' even mean??

There was a time when planet was full of interesting posts... technical, project management, events, tutorials...

These days almost every post look like SPAM and SEO directed content.

I've literally just read a company blog posting a list of top development companies....🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁 and they list themselves as #1. How subtle.

@pcambra Can we prevent people from uploading files if all they upload is screenshots of a patch having applied?

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@pcambra Have you not encountered that yet? usually it's a screenshot of the terminal output showing the patch applied without errors. The other day I saw a new one: screenshot diff!!! https://www.drupal.org/project/external_entities/issues/3376604#comment-15170670

Oh well, here we go again, DrupalCon Europe pricing is published and the early bird is 700€.

https://events.drupal.org/lille2023/registration-information

DrupalCon registration fee is higher than the minimum wage in 19 European countries.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_minimum_wage

And only 12 scholarships have been granted https://events.drupal.org/lille2023/grants-scholarships-inclusion-funds

As far as I'm concerned, the licensed company to do this, Kuoni through the Association do not release the financial information of the event to the community.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@jurgenhaas @ekes @penyaskito @rachel_norfolk @pcambra You're missing the point. 'Fix it yourself' is the mantra in OSS but carried through to other aspects of life it's bullshit.

joachim,
@joachim@drupal.community avatar

@jurgenhaas @ekes @penyaskito @rachel_norfolk @pcambra If the DA represents the Drupal community, then we get to have opinions on it. Same as we get to protest against governments. We don't need to provide solutions - that's not our job. If the DA is a self-appointed group that has no democratic standing and no mandate -- which it is -- then yeah, maybe it's not our place to complain about it.
