I'm a parish minister in covenant with a progressive denomination, currently taking a walk on the wild side through academia. I live in both Vermont and Newfoundland, study the political economy of public and public-adjacent institutions, and am extremely not into austerity or genocide (and I don't find a lot of daylight between the theology that allows either of those things to occur).

Wondering what happens to make just peace politically tenable. Here for futurity, yours and theirs.

When I'm doing systems coaching with church leaders, I often ask 'what's the money tree for this church,' and what I mean is, what's the side hustle that the congregation, by virtue of its physical and human resources, is profitably engaged in as a way of sustaining the theological depth projects and community justice outreach that are loss leaders but also our primary work in the world.

I spend a lot of time thinking about viable political economy for progressive faith; these questions matter.

anyway it just occurred to me that what I am actually asking folks, and encouraging them to ask themselves, is 'how will this church engage in rent-seeking given that this is the only way our public institutions can be ongoingly sustained'

AND THEN IT FURTHER OCCURRED TO ME that this has in some way always been the question.

Pew rents in the first two centuries of Massachusetts religious governance. Patronage for indulgences. Tithing for salvation, with denominationalism and the threat of hell combining to achieve monopolistic enclosure.

@APBBlue Yes, and a literal leveraging of (often endowment-based) church resources to create the conditions for commodity rent

The Nazi regime engaged in aggressive church-bell confiscation and removal, smelting bells down for 'war material.' After the war, dumps with only bells in them were found across Germany, setting off a massive artifact repatriation process. This became politically sticky- e.g., Austria had not been an allied nation, but many tons of bells were taken from its churches, and overall there weren't enough surviving bells to go around. 🤯

I had no idea what to bring here, having never been a PhD student, and having never lived in Newfoundland. I must have mostly gotten it right, in that there has been relatively little I have yearned for, but my three answers for next fall are "more sudafed, more of the jarred pesto that I like, and way, WAY more of my favorite fiction books."

Pleasure reading tsunami incoming. I cannot live on Gibson-Graham alone.

12 days to departure. ⌛

Botswana threatens to send 20,000 elephants to Germany | Environment News | Al Jazeera

“Angered by proposals in Berlin to restrict the import of hunting trophies, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said in comments published on Wednesday that Germans should try living among elephants. He claimed that an explosion in the number of the mammals roaming his country has produced a “plague”.”

Middle schooler: [classmate] says I'm not Christian since we're Unitarian

Me: eh, tell 'em to fuck off. No one gets to police who belongs to Jesus.

[upon second thought]

... maybe don't phrase it quite that way. 😂

I need to quit audible but I have a bunch of credits stored up that I will lose.

Give me your VERY FAVORITE audiobooks- things extremely well done, non fic, fic, memoir, things relevant to PhD students etc.

good friday, the city is mud-coloured and gray in the soft rain. great tits sing in the bare trees. in the park, the rose bushes are covered in brown cloth. the only splashes of colour are the bright synthetic fabrics of pedestrians, milling about.

@hugo me: yes but is this you or your robot 😉

jordinn,
@jordinn@zirk.us avatar

@hugo as it turns out (as in, after some reflection), knowing that a particular and consistent 'who' is on the other end of interpersonal transaction matters to me. It's a glue of trust that allows human relationship to 'develop' (whatever that means) such that we don't as individuals continually have to renegotiate every covenant between us to have a simple conversation. It's something about consent, and where the ground is and whether we hold that faith in one another is worthy of cultivation.

Egg salad on thick white bread is appealingly squishy. Wet squish bounded by dry.

2 semesters in on PhD learning and such are the stakes of my thinking 🤷🏻‍♀️

Americans, did you grow up in a family that says "Honest to Pete!" as an exclamation? The internet explains this to itself as "you can trust me" but in my family it was definitely "for fucks sake."

Y'all?

A weird thing about this era is that it's possible to hear The Pixies on random coffeeshop playlists or the radio, but followed immediately by Hall and Oates.

I'm not saying that this is a hugely pressing problem, given everything. Just perhaps not what God intended.

Reading Newfoundland history is making me realize that either the vocabulary or the class politics are opaque on my end. "Merchant" and "the merchant class" do so much lifting in these accounts; these labels seem synonymous with tyranny, monopoly, rent-seeking, and also the only source of voluntary largesse other than the Crown.

"Merchant" does not mean this to me, and I'm not sure if it's because I'm an American or bc I missed something essential re: 18th/19th c political economy in general 🤷🏻‍♀️

jordinn,
@jordinn@zirk.us avatar

@CedarTea So who got to be a merchant, and how? And who or what was above the merchants?

jordinn,
@jordinn@zirk.us avatar

@CedarTea Also, why couldn't the fishermen direct-sell? Was this about pier access?

jordinn,
@jordinn@zirk.us avatar

@CedarTea I don't think it is- I'm researching the Moravians in Labrador and they were slavebuyers and sellers in Antigua while running supply ships between North American missions and Europe and overseeing fish and fur sales from their northern Labrador posts
