    @idoubtit Ugh. I'm not sure if "we're all heroes" is better or worse than "we're all family" on the scale of corporate jingoism.

    The worst I've seen in recent years was a VP who used an image of a military sniper looking down the telescopic sight of a Barrett M82 sniper rifle. Because he considers himself a "troubleshooter". 😬

    Experimenting for the first time with self-hosted AI-generated images this evening on my Linux laptop to see what it can do: default install using 1.5. Simple to setup if you're familiar with venv and Pip.

    Using just the CPU and giving it the prompt "bluebird", this is what it gave in 17 minutes (CPU only). Must admit that I'm pretty impressed.

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @isagalaev Sure! I used https://github.com/invoke-ai/InvokeAI (uses the curl | sh method to start the install menu), and the steps in https://invoke-ai.github.io/InvokeAI/installation/020_INSTALL_MANUAL/

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @isagalaev It has its own local webserver so - once it's running - the prompts, etc, are all point and click.

When a company can hold something you value hostage – the people you love, the data you rely on, or even access to your front door locks – then can treat you worse and you'll still stick around. The "revealed preference" here is that you like your family photos more than you hate Mark Zuckerberg:https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/facebooks-secret-war-switching-costs"

    @RedtheBean Cracking article.

    I feel that I should tag @idoubtit and others who (quite rightly) rage at people who won't leave objectively awful social networks.

    Understanding that what my profession refers to as "stickyness" is by design is useful, if not comforting.

    Along with many others today, it's my birthday! 🎉

    It's been delightful engaging with people who are usually open, frank, & talk with you in good faith.

    It often exceeds the best early years of the Other Site, from which most of us are castaways. It's a comparison I make periodically, as that was my experience and I'm not a fan of the Halo Effect.

    Am excited to see how Mastodon grows in technology and popularity. And due credit to @trumpet for managing this instance. 👍🏻

    @mdstevens0612 I think markdown is supported in Mastodon, but it's server specific (and probably not enabled by default). Either way, mas.to doesn't support it.

    I just came across a fabulous line from Carol Saller in a Chicago Manual of Style blog post about how to write "dos and don'ts":

    "The amount of head scratching needed to figure this out can't possibly be worth it."

    Chicago Style: dos and don'ts
    AP Style: do's and don'ts
    Eats Shoots & Leaves: do's and don't's.

    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @SergKoren @grammargirl Agreed. Is it any wonder we have the grocer’s apostrophe when even style manuals choose to officially confuse plurality and possession.

    Magpie swooping: Inside the Australian bird's annual reign of terror

    @idoubtit Can confirm. 😅

    That last line is 👌🏻 though.

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @idoubtit I love them, too. It doesn't have to be either/or, but that's not going to get people polarised enough to generate clicks.

    I grew up around magpies in Australia and was terrorised by them for a month every year. But we were always aware of why they were doing it, and didn't hold any animosity towards them. Well, morons did - but they're morons.

    OK, my day got better. £57.88 royalty statement from the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society.

    Amused that they've put Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps down as an 'educational recording'. To be fair, that particular episode did demonstrate how to wank yourself thin!

    A whopping 4p from books, which is marginally better than a kick in the fanny. What can you buy with 4p these days? A single Tic Tac?

    jumile,

    @arianesherine Thanks for sharing that. I found it very interesting, and quite sobering.

    @idoubtit To me it's always interesting to see how these kinds of accounts live their lives: polemics, shitposting, celebrity, original and interesting content, etc. But I'm loathe to tell someone they're having fun the wrong way.

    Fine if it's bringing engagement elsewhere, but odd if the means is the end.

    TIL there's a Mastodon library on PyPI.

    A short while later, I now have a script that uses the Mastodon to delete all my statuses (toots, replies, boosts, polls, etc) older than X days. Happy days.

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    While I think it's good housekeeping on a platform like this where there's very little value in older content (that's what Kbin, Lemmy and others are for), this was more about practising Python, API, and documentation deciphering.

    The latter can be... impenetrable.

    @JsonCulverhouse Yep, and it mostly works. Except when it doesn't.

    @idoubtit I’ve considered flying over for DragonCon. Having done WorldCon here (London 2014), though I loved it, I doubt I’d get much else out of DC. Suspect the same may be true of SDCC.

    Queuing for anything isn’t a signifier of value to me. (Not to disparage those who think otherwise).

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @idoubtit I get more out of talking with comic artists in the market area, novel authors on stands, talks/panels, filk performances, or even cosplay. Those were definitely the highlight for me at the cons I’ve been to here. (Though, I’ve never been a celeb cultist, which may explain why). But, I agree, each to their own.

    IT career advice:
    The tools you already have do a LOT more than your company uses them for. Often products are purchased to do ONE thing. Tools need both a motivated admin + one with time.
    Learn what you already own and master it. I see this CONSTANTLY. Volunteer responsibility.

    jumile,
    @jumile@mas.to avatar

    @SwiftOnSecurity This is like the spreadsheet argument. As someone said to me the other day: most people use 5% of Excel’s features, but everyone uses a different 5%.

    Though we agreed that MS have changed their “add All The Features - moar!” mindset to charging rent on new ones, like Copilot and Python, but that’s a different discussion.
