I need book recommendations for something I won't be able to put down.

I enjoy suspense, but not gore, multigenerational novels, autobiographies, time travelish books, but not science fiction, historical fiction, & some fantasy.

So, what ya' got for me?

kel,
@kel@mastodon.online avatar

@Saltssaltgirl

The Time Travellers Wife - Audrey Niffenegger

Any magic realism by Haruki Murakami!

The Gregory McGuire re-imaginings of classic fairy tales!

The Northern Lights trilogy - Philip Pullman

Enjoy 😊

I was confused by this too, then I realised it's for physical media, at least,, that was my conclusion, I have no actual evidence of this.

I just spent about an hour in our basement looking for 3 items:

  • copper pipe
  • pipe bender
  • pipe flaring tools

Along the way I started discovering many things that we'd lost but needed, I'd forgotten the existence of, or that we'd forgotten the location of.

I started making a list because the collection of items is... absurd? ridiculous? & kinda interesting.

🧵: long. will add content warning just because that'll take up WAY less space in a feed for folks who don't feel like reading it.

    I am looking at the bait being posted and boosted and it's kind of insulting. Like I don't already know what is going on with this crap.

    I can see and feel the outrage provocation, people literally trying to make everyone feel angry.

    Don't we feel angry enough already, I certainly don't need any more provocation.

    What are they hoping for, an aneurism?

    🤷‍♂️

    kel,
    @kel@mastodon.online avatar

    @MatthewKay @flockofnazguls

    I would love to see just a scrap of evidence that any of this ever has any positive effect. Like do climate deniers suddenly have a change of heart, or do big game hunters suddenly think "you know what, you're right I am going to stop this", I want to see the headline "Mass outrage on SM has net positive effect on fossil fuel use" 😂

    I mean no disrespect, but it just seems like a huge circle jerk of achieving absolutely nothing other than riling people up!

    kel,
    @kel@mastodon.online avatar

    @MatthewKay @flockofnazguls

    Okay, okay, maybe it does help to feel a sense of hope in the camaraderie of shared outrage; it's not my bag though.

    I think the best thing any of us can do is work on ourselves and try and be better in any way we can, it feels futile, but if more and more people do this, eventually it will work. i.e be strong and healthy!

    I think most people here know this, and know that outrage posts are ultimately not that helpful and have them filtered out. I know I do this.

    kel,
    @kel@mastodon.online avatar

    @flockofnazguls @_slotek_ @MatthewKay

    Absolutely, I fell for it, hook line and sinker! Realised it was killing me, and stopped and started the hard work of undoing that harm. It's incredibly difficult because it is mixed up in a support network of friends and colleagues; how do you extrapolate the two? I chose to stop it all and hoped to reconnect in another world (here), sadly that didn't happen, but it was either that or my health.

    This combination is a perfect narcissistic abuse cycle 💯

    I agree completely!

    It was super chilled here for ages, but this last few months.

    I don't mind actual discussion, but it can so quickly drop into personal attacks, at which point... game over!

    I just spotted a post that said interaction was declining, I am hoping this is true and it's because those with aggressive agendas are realising their tactics don't work here and they are easily stopped.

    Fingers crossed 🤞

    Keep filtering!!

    interesting to hear your experiences, I haven't found this. yet?

    Agree totally about working but not liking jobs. The one thing I have been able to do over the last few months is loads of cleaning and sorting, especially in my kitchen. I wish the rest of my life was as well organised, functional and well used as my kitchen. I may give that some thought ... what is it about the kitchen that makes it so welcoming and usable!

    Apparently Huntr can now can make AI generated resumes (🤦‍♀️ please no) and AI generated Cover Letters...

    Cover letters are 🐄💩. So are all the "why do you want to work for us" required application fields. Having an AI generate the "Golly, it's always been my dream to work at [insert co name i hadn't heard of 5 minutes ago] because [regurgitation of your 🐄💩 "healthy work life" claims instead of reality that I just want to pay for housing, eat food, & have medical ins]" is actually pretty tempting.

    I think I am developing quite a reasonable technique for v60 pour overs.

    Very little cling!

    kel,
    @kel@mastodon.online avatar

    @johnl

    Aeropress is great, I use that when out and about, say on a walk.

    V60 is more work, but not that much and the results can be very good indeed.

    How did it go?

    kel,
    @kel@mastodon.online avatar

    @johnl

    Damn, yeah, I have messed up so many v60s, it's not as easy as just pouring water over.

    The grind matters a lot.

    I grind the same for espresso now, it just works, you get that 'mud' at the end and a beautifully clear coffee.

    is there, but it was a bit of a challenge, for anyone who needs any help, please ask.

    When it comes to choosing papers, you should know that these can have a big impact on brewing time. Hario has several different paper suppliers across its different paper filter range, and some papers brew faster than others. There are also many third party manufacturers who make excellent papers. Above all I'd recommend using the white, bleached filters and not the brown, unbleached filters. The unbleached can impart a papery taste to your coffee, which a lot of people don't like. The V60 Brewing Table his brewing method works best when using two main pours, and the size of these is relative to the size of the brew you are making. Here's a little table breaking down some common brew sizes. Coffee dose Time (m) 15g Phase Water Cumulative added (g) brew weight (g) 0:00-0:45 Bloom 30-40 30-40 0:45-1:15 1:15-1:45 Pour one Pour two 110-120 150 100 250 Water added (8) 40-50 150-160 130 IMPORTANT: These numbers are the total cumulative weights, not individual pours. Essentially these are the numbers you want to see on the scale while you're making coffee. 20g Cumulative brew weight (g) 40-50 200 330 30g Cumulative Water added (g) brew weight (g) 60-80 60-80 220-240 300 500
    1 Fins your fiter with hot water. Hotwater from the tap is OK, if your water gets nice and hot. This not only rinses out any papery taste from the paper, but also heats the brewer up. The lighter the roast of the coffee you are brewing, the hotter you'll want things to be. Place your brewer on a cup or carafe. Grind your coffee just before brewing. Pour into the middle of the cone, and make a small, volcano-like well in the centre using your finger or a spoon. 2 Bailyour water, and use right from the boil. Gently pour a little water on to the coffee. You're trying to just wet all the grounds, so that they swell and release CO, This phase is called the bloom. Generally aim to use 2g of water per gram of coffee, but you can use a little more if you need to get more coffee wet. 3 As soon as you've poured the water pick up be brewer and swirl it around in a circular motion. You are trying to get absolutely all the coffee mixed with the water. If you see lumps or big bubbles forming, swirl a little more. Leave the coffee to sit for 45 seconds. It will swell like resting dough during this time, and don't worry if some water is dripping. 4 Now pour the first main pour. Your aim is to take about 30 seconds to pour this stage, and at the end of that time for 60 per cent of the total water to have been poured. The cone should be pretty full at this point, unless you're brewing a single cup in a two-cup brewer. Pour in a gentle, circular motion to make sure water is evenly distributed.
    5 The next stage is another slow pour, aiming to take another 30 seconds to get all the remaining water in. A gentle circular pour works well here also. Once you've finished pouring, grab a spoon (tea, soup or Ossert - any will work) and give it a circular stir in one netion and then a gente str in the oposite direction. This helps prevent any grounds from sticking to the walls of the brewer. 6 Wait until the brewer is drained to about two thirds full, Pick it up and give it a gentle swirl. Again, this helps prevent the coffee from sticking to the walls, and also helps the settled coffee bed end up nice and flat. This will help with evenness Allow it to drain fully, discard the paper and coffee and enjoy the delicious brew you've made. Dialling It In The main area you'll focus on, once your pouring technique is solid, is the grind. Many people are surprised at how fine you can, and should, grind for a good brew on a V60. I would recommend initially going a little finer each time until suddenly you notice the brew has become a little harsh and bitter, with an unpleasant aftertaste. This happens very suddenly, and is the sign you've gone too fine. Going back just a little coarser will leave you in a sweet spot. It is worth tracking your brew times, just to see if they're suddenly shifting. This can happen when you change a coffee, and can give you some indication of which way to grind (i.e. coarser or finer) to get a better cup the next time you brew.
