@paul data processing and analysis... I like it. What kind of analysis do you do?
I am quite active in text data analysis.

kjr,
@kjr@babka.social avatar

@paul I am currently finishing two projects in Hebrew archival text analysis.
One is to detect entities (people, places, locations, dates and organizations) from archival collections and the relationships between them, so we can extract biographic information about the people: when and where born, name of the parents, organizations the person belonged, etc.
The second one is just to extract the entities, link them to bibliographic entity files and improve the search of the data and the linking between documents of different archives.

People who say that antisemitism is an American problem, let's talk about the antisemitism in just in the last week.

In there have been two firebombings of synagogues:

https://globalnews.ca/news/10075973/montreal-synagogue-firebombing/

A week ago, a Jewish woman was punched out for holding a sign for one of the Hamas hostages:

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/jewish-canadian-woman-attacked

The K-word is being used without fear at :

https://twitter.com/HenMazzig/status/1722339748197310671

And at Toronto Metropolitan University a Jewish student was told Hitler didn't finish the job:

https://torontosun.com/news/local-news/warmington-jewish-student-told-hitler-didnt-finish-job-on-tmu-campus

EDIT: It seems there's been coverage by the CBC and Trudeau. Thanks for the updates.

Look, I don't like Hamas either, but it's disingenuous to complain that they're close to civilian infrastructure when there's like two and a half million people crammed into a space 25 miles long and seven miles wide. A safe buffer zone literally cannot exist in the tiny, overcrowded space.

After migrant parent pressure, Anne Frank daycare center to be renamed - report

Parents in Saxony-Anhalt German State promoted the decision to rename the "Anne Frank" daycare center in Tangerhütte, a small town in the state, according to reports in German media.

The move was driven by parents who found it difficult to explain Frank's significance to their children. According to Apollo News, a German news site, in a small town in Saxony-Anhalt, a daycare center has become the center of a local scandal.

@shekinahcancook @hundertsieben it happens in almost all the world, but in Germany, Austria and some East-European countries the situation is different. I suppose that they learned from their history (Nazism, Communism...).
Outside of Europe you can find othet exceptions in the left of Kurdistan and Iran.
I don't claim that there is not left wing antisemitismus in the mentioned places, just that one can find different positions.

Look America, if you really can't distinguish between a deli in Los Angeles and a country on another continent I don't know what to say. But I do know that the left is rife with and wants to be Judenrein.

I've always been a litttle cynical but as the days go by since Oct 7 I feel like my lifetime of left activism was just embedding myself within my own lynch mob.

"A photograph of the graffiti in the Canters Deli parking lot showed three different areas beneath a mural depicting history in L.A. defaced with phrases that read, “Israels only religion is capitalism,” “How many dead in the name of greed?” and “Free .”

There was a long running debate under Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the UK Labour Party, about his alleged antisemitism and the growing antisemitism in the grass roots. There was a lot of insinuation and very few real facts were presented, even about who was engaged in this antisemitism.

These last few days I can see Keir Starmer, is in a fight with muslim elements of the party who are not so happy with his condemnation of Hamas and arguments in favour of Israel's right to defend itself.

I don't want to point a finger without more knowledge but is British Labour antisemitism fundamentally Islamic or is it also white Christian?

kjr,
@kjr@babka.social avatar

@aelliotpr @raf I am not sure whether concepts like white/christian/muslim are the right ones to explain the antisemitism in the British Labour Party. As good as I know, the actual antisemitism in the party started mostly in trotzkist elements inside of the party and increased with the rise anti-imperialist (anti-Amercan) movements.
Modern ideologies based in intersectionality and identity politics contributed to it in the last years, but with a very limited success, quite less than in the US.

kjr, (edited )
@kjr@babka.social avatar

@raf @aelliotpr yes, of course. But the antisemitism in the Labour has a lot of specific features with their own historic process.
That explains for instance why it is so strong among leaders of trade unions, and relatively marginal in their basis. Or the attempts to approach to Hamas or Hezbollah, something what doesn't really fit in the traditional British antisemitism, who tends to be more linked to nativist positions.

kjr,
@kjr@babka.social avatar

@raf @aelliotpr I observed a lot of this traditional antisemitism in the discourse of some pro-Brexit activists, both from right and left.

For me, Twitter was/is a Social Network. I have friends there that didn't move here.

People quitting Twitter altogether leave their friends behind? They have other online connections with them? Twitter is not about friends?

Please explain, if you can.

@hananc For me depends. I left Twitter but I didn't cancel my account. To have exchange with people Mastodon was just more friendly, and I always prefer self organized networks than big companies. Some of my friends moved there (or to MeWe), some not.
Now with the war it changed, and I have more contact with people in Twitter and Mewe, since in this moment is more friendly.

serge, to Israel
@serge@babka.social avatar

Since I'm seeing a bunch of folks calling for a ceasefire in the war between Hamas and Israel, I want to make it clear that a ceasefire that does not include removal of Hamas from Gaza is not a solution for either Israeli or the Palestinians.

Hamas is a terrorist organization that has run Gaza for nearly 20 years and terrorized both Israel and controlled the Palestinian people, keeping them from having free and fair elections, diverting money and resources away from the people, etc.

If you care about either (or both) Israelis and Palestinians, calling for a non-conditional ceasefire would do nothing for these people.

When Hamas is removed, then finally there can be a chance peace for both Israelis and Palestinians.

kjr,
@kjr@babka.social avatar

@serge
I don't think it is ignorance. I think it is something different, but it is difficult to understand.
Something I identify it with arrogance of people that "knows everything better" and at the same time want to show a kind of moral superiority.
In the last days is especially difficult the interaction... people talking about universal peace and love, lecturing about it and how we have to do things, without to take into consideration that they are talking with people that have lost friends, family members, colleagues of the work... it can really hurt.
