@justinas Discourse not Discord though. I was highly confused at first about ActivityPub support in Discord (the chat app that also has internal forums these days).
Hard not to feel like this spam attack is the end of an era for Mastodon. The possibility of doing this has always been here, but now that it's actually happened we're going to see it happen more often.
The fact that smaller hobbyist instances have been the main vector for this is going to have knock on effects on other small hobbyist instances.
@Anarcat@jacob@misty While allow-list federation is certainly something people will talk about more, isn't the main problem of the current spam wave that not well monitored hobbyist instances have open registration?
I really hope that software defaults will switch to invite based or similar methods as hobbyist instances really have no business in running public servers that easily become spam vectors.
I'm discussing #TTRPG cover #graphicdesign and #illustration with a fellow game designer who has been told that "There is a specific way Pen & Paper covers have to look like." - and they should update their old cover.
You can see the old cover on the left, the new cover on the right.
Which one would you be more willing to buy / look into?
@alxd For digital publishing the cover probably doesn't matter that much, but thinking how these covers would look like in a traditional book-store I would agree that the first one looks more like a cooking recipe book and the second one like one that would attract RPG players (as stereotypical as it is).
I'm not going to be prescriptive (I have my preferences for co-op structures) but I'm not sure having a single volunteer sys admin for an instance is the way to go. It's too much pressure and hard work, especially if the person is working alone.
I think we need better and more organised structures better suited to longevity.
Wow the fact that WhatsApp is going public about its forth coming federation is so wild. Pretty psyched about the EU's DSA and DMA, really seemed like they are pushing things in the right redirection.
@liaizon Not sure... my take away from the Wired story is that it will be half-broken #xmpp with only a c2s interface, no group-chats and you need to sign a contract with Meta to be able to use it. Smells more like malicious compliance to me...
When I need to translate some text from an unknown language, I use LibreTranslate to automatically translate it via machine translation. The quality may not be perfect but it's good enough to mostly understand the text.
@kyva@forgejo@Codeberg It's a fully open source alternative to GooglePay / ApplePay / Paypal etc. that is has finally reached a point where it might see some support from EU based banks, learn more here: https://taler.net/
Before you ask: it is not another crypto currency and does not use a blockchain 😅
@tbss For now there are only two banks involved in the pilot, one in Germany and one in Hungary. You will have to wait a bit longer I guess. In general, your best bet will be a bank that is part of the coop bank system and Santander is AFAIK not.
Many of my friends are unhappy with members of private group and admin of public semi-anonymous groups being able to see phone number of a member since #Quicksy and #Prav currently takes the phone number as username.
We want to change this in @prav and allow Prav users to choose a custom username which will hide their phone number in groups.
We need your support to implement this. Please contribute to our fund raising campaign.
@praveen@prav Wouldn't it be better in that case to not use the phone number at all as a user name, and rather only use it as an out of band password reset method similar to how some XMPP servers do it with email addresses?
