@cferdinandi this not only a adhd/autism thing, but mostly a maker vs manager thing. If I have tasks that fit in 15 to 30 minutes and require little deep work, many meetings are okay. You are almost always done with a task.
If your tasks need longer focus, you tend to plan your tasks in full or half days. Then meetings are essentially a guarantee to get nothing done.
Having adhd/autism puts you more on a maker schedule because we need more ramp-up time to get into the task.
So, I am diagnosed autistic and most likely also gifted with adhd, albeit a lighter version.
Your post resonates with me as it takes about 2 or 3 short meetings to completely ruin my day. The getting started with a task (or switching for that matter) always takes time, mornings mostly are for small tasks. Or, more often than not, I talk about my things in the daily and then ignore the others parts. 1/2
@cferdinandi I think it is hard to self-diagnose with confidence since some traits of autism overlap with a developer mindset. Just from what you write, I would not rule out that you actually have both superpowers.
@cferdinandi I strictly cycle through my t-shirts to not stress out about that (and also to load-balance the tear/wear across them). Additionally, I prepare the clothes for the next day in the evening, also for energy reasons.
This sometimes leads to fun combinations of shirt and day, like wearing a "I don't give a shit" - shirt for a retrospective.
🧵1/2 Someone has a really rotten sense of humor today. I make a simple request of IT, and have to do it in a channel that’s truly horrible about doing things properly. Fine.
But then hours and hours go by. So I finally decide to run an errand for my son after lunch. I’m about five minutes from home, driving, when several people pop into my slack asking to help.
@btaroli I find it super exhausting when people do not understand asynchronous communication. And given they replied async already (well: kept you waiting) waiting a bit on their end should be common courtesy.
Am I the only person to notice that CBS News showed an advertisement for Autism Speaks today, during national news at 4PM PT? I live in SF Bay Area, and I’m not sure if this was just from local KPIX. I do certainly plan to reach out and raise their attention to the harm this group causes.
@tenderlove I thought about tweaking the SHA until it's a lat/long pair. One needs to now move around a lot to allow for changes, so this seems good for agile companies.
I have decided that I am going to try and go to Disneyland for my birthday for a few days, and this time I am not going to chicken out on Incredicoaster. I'm going to do the roller coasters until I like them 😂
It's really possible that I am just too picky to let someone else edit my podcasts, because I find the editing on most shows to be not that great, but I should probably give it a try.
Especially if I ever want to scale up to more than 1-2 shows a week, it feels like getting an editor involved at some point might be needed.
