🐝 New on ADHD ftw! The ADHD temporal dead zone https://adhdftw.com/the-adhd-temporal-dead-zone/

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@cferdinandi this not only a adhd/autism thing, but mostly a maker vs manager thing. If I have tasks that fit in 15 to 30 minutes and require little deep work, many meetings are okay. You are almost always done with a task.

If your tasks need longer focus, you tend to plan your tasks in full or half days. Then meetings are essentially a guarantee to get nothing done.

Having adhd/autism puts you more on a maker schedule because we need more ramp-up time to get into the task.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@cferdinandi oh shit. That was not my intention.

So, I am diagnosed autistic and most likely also gifted with adhd, albeit a lighter version.

Your post resonates with me as it takes about 2 or 3 short meetings to completely ruin my day. The getting started with a task (or switching for that matter) always takes time, mornings mostly are for small tasks. Or, more often than not, I talk about my things in the daily and then ignore the others parts. 1/2

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@cferdinandi I think it is hard to self-diagnose with confidence since some traits of autism overlap with a developer mindset. Just from what you write, I would not rule out that you actually have both superpowers.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@cferdinandi I strictly cycle through my t-shirts to not stress out about that (and also to load-balance the tear/wear across them). Additionally, I prepare the clothes for the next day in the evening, also for energy reasons.

This sometimes leads to fun combinations of shirt and day, like wearing a "I don't give a shit" - shirt for a retrospective.

🧵1/2 Someone has a really rotten sense of humor today. I make a simple request of IT, and have to do it in a channel that’s truly horrible about doing things properly. Fine.

But then hours and hours go by. So I finally decide to run an errand for my son after lunch. I’m about five minutes from home, driving, when several people pop into my slack asking to help.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@btaroli I find it super exhausting when people do not understand asynchronous communication. And given they replied async already (well: kept you waiting) waiting a bit on their end should be common courtesy.

Am I the only person to notice that CBS News showed an advertisement for Autism Speaks today, during national news at 4PM PT? I live in SF Bay Area, and I’m not sure if this was just from local KPIX. I do certainly plan to reach out and raise their attention to the harm this group causes.

@btaroli @actuallyautistic you seem to have a typo in your hashtags ("Autism Soeaks" )

How cool is this? @joeldrapper brought some print copies of Why's Poignant Guide to Ruby and I was lucky enough to receive one.

What's everyone using to geotag their git commits these days?

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@tenderlove I thought about tweaking the SHA until it's a lat/long pair. One needs to now move around a lot to allow for changes, so this seems good for agile companies.

tenderlove, to random
@tenderlove@mastodon.social avatar

Please people. It's not "Mastodon", it's "ActivityPub/Mastodon"

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@tenderlove and I thought that it's only Mastodon if it comes from the Mastodon-Region of France. Everything else is just sparkling ActivityPub...

I have decided that I am going to try and go to Disneyland for my birthday for a few days, and this time I am not going to chicken out on Incredicoaster. I'm going to do the roller coasters until I like them 😂

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin Tom Scott has a video on YouTube how he conquered his fear of roller-coasters. Both entertaining and educational. Yeah well, Tom Scott...

It's really possible that I am just too picky to let someone else edit my podcasts, because I find the editing on most shows to be not that great, but I should probably give it a try.

Especially if I ever want to scale up to more than 1-2 shows a week, it feels like getting an editor involved at some point might be needed.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin if you change your mind, consider working with https://mandymoore.tech/

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@isotopp vermutlich ist nur echtes sshpass, wenn man damit Zugang zum root des Hypervisors bekommt...

collin, to vim
@collin@ruby.social avatar

I was thinking of GUI tools, but is obviously the GOAT for running scripts from your editor.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin well, it still works in gVim, Mac I'm and the likes. You just have a mostly different env, which might be a blocker for other editors. If the receiving program/script is in a known location and can handle it, it should be possible for everyone.

collin, to random
@collin@ruby.social avatar

Every text editor should have the ability to run an arbitrary shell script from a menu item, send stdin, and replace the current selection based on the output.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin this is one reason I use Vim in the terminal. Seine things are easy in the editor, some things are easier with external tools.

One of my best friends who lives on the other side of the country and has battled with depression has not responded to me in weeks and now my iMessage is not popping up as delivered.

I am legitimately worried but don’t have any way to contact her family or anything.

Do I know anyone who does TDD in a pretty religious way? The benefits and reasons you would do TDD make sense to me abstractly, but figuring out the interfaces and whatnot without writing any code from the outside in is a little hard for me to get my my head around.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin for a long time, I reverse TDD'd everything. As in "write a manually tested version, comment everything out, only reactivate things to make specs pass". Helped me find quite a few edge-cases.

For refactoring and slight extending, I use the "99 bottles of OOP" approach.

Currently, I try to write smaller spike/POCs, write one huge integration spec for it and then build around that pure TDD Legos, as I understand the goal better.

The big reason I could never use Linux as my main OS is that I’d spend all my time switching distros and tweaking things. macOS gives me about the max number of options I can have and get anything done.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin AFAIR, MacOS X is a fork of FreeBSD, so you that tracks. 😁

kronn,

@collin it's not as glamorous as first contact, of course. But following up, verification experiments and well... Second contact are essential.

Could you spend 6-7 hours writing a six page document about a specific time in your career you had to solve a difficult technical problem? That is pretty daunting just based on memory and my ability to write that much.

kronn,
@kronn@ruby.social avatar

@collin I would need to spend a few hours to pick a topic, because memory... Writing would be the easy part, weaving a narrative, a web of strings, an elaborate arc, that leads to the ultimate discovery that only this one innocent character caused such a trouble and how everything we write is, indeed, code.

I think I miss writing. Thanks for the reminder. 😊
