this was a loss-making entity earmarked for privatisation not too long ago.

Not surprising me as the historical trend has gone undefeated for years...My iPhone case will be here before my new iPhone! ROFL I just got the Amazon notification and email. It broke my concentration with writing and tooting on my alt account. 😂

I was just starting to get going with the next part of my Two Brothers story. I might try to get a great late-night writing session going before bedtime. 🤭

the app in allows third-party tracking from an organization called "branch metrics" which makes ~84k attempts to fetch a whole host of user data in the span of ~7 hours.

@Deus dunno about legal recourse. i’m sure they have covered themselves by burying the selling of our data somewhere in the t&cs.

also, to be fair, it just isn’t them. uber, domino’s, mygate, sharekhan all do this. even if none of them have a third party as ravenous as branch metrics. 12000 requests per hour is simply insane!

chief takeaway (heh) for me: enable duckduckgo app tracking protection on android and keep a separate device for such commercial transactions.

The presence of Indians, from India, in Fediverse is insignificant as on today. Most of us are happy with X and social media tools from Meta. Even the number of posts from existing users, in India, is very low though many of them seem to be active in the above mentioned social media sites.

What can be done to improve the situation? There are no carrots here.

@srijit @mastodonindians i don’t think there’s a silver bullet. from my failed experience in trying to move friends and family across,

  1. the inertia to stay on the traditional platforms is too high. it’s too much of a hassle to move.
  2. they’ve already built their follower base on other platforms. the dopamine hit of regular engagement is more readily available there.

these are isolated observations, though. one can’t say how significant these factors truly are.

Oct 1 - Shameless self-promo. What's your WIP? What's it about?

It's the Jedi Academy from a terrified youngling's point of view. A young teen is essentially kidnapped into the order and quickly clocks how deeply screwed up it is. Also, the force drives you psychotic. That's the "dark side." And if you turn, they genuinely believe that it killed you, you're dead.

Thematically, it's about self-appointed heroes creating the violence they claim to protect us from.

@orionkidder i had been procaatinating since 2013 on a book on a global flu pandemic based on the H1N1 strain.

by 2018, i had the chapter outline down, most characters defined, and had typed in events covering the first couple of days. and then i procrastinated some more.

and then that guy had to go eat that bat soup.
