"we fund Matrix dev by selling encrypted messaging to governments, which includes police: if you don’t like that then please feel free to use a different app" May 9th, 2023 -@element
Well now we know why they changed their name from Riot to Element. Can't have the app be revolutionary themed if your actual audience is the fucking cops
@theruran@alcinnz Do you have any knowledge as to where the bulk of funding is coming from for those who are supporting the XMPP ecosystem? @tigase whats your funding model look like?
Element really just told us if we don't like their direction of selling services to cops we should use another app. This is seriously the direction they settled on.
I didn't create @pixelfed for myself, and despite my best intentions, I can be wrong sometimes.
My recent post about app onboarding has received both positive and negative feedback, and I'd like to explore alternative solutions to this with feedback from @liaizon, @feditips and anyone else before we proceed.
Pixelfed is for the people, when you speak we listen, and we strive for community consensus despite my own opinion.
Pixelfed is powered by people like you, don't forget that ❤️
I'm working to improve the @pixelfed mobile app onboarding.
It will probably be seen as more controversial than the Mastodon app.
I'm okay with that.
Some people claim we're emulating popular platforms as if it's a bad thing, like we're selling user data or building communities without safety and moderation.
Ignore them, growth isn't a bad thing, we need to make the #fediverse easy to join, and moderate!
Every fedi project emulates an existing service, nothing is new lol
@dansup@pixelfed if this post is about setting up a default server PLEASE dont go down the rout mastodon has taken. Like seriously as someone who has continually hyped pixelfed for years and have been interacting with you since the beginning, having a default server set in the mobile apps is the wrong way to make onboarding easier. There are so many other ways we can go about this
@dansup@pixelfed what about somesort of server covenant that general servers who want to be included in some sort of prominent placement could join and promise to be on the latest version and be checked to be fully functional and running at a desired speed. then the "default server" button could be randomized between trusted servers, reminiscent of the "im feeling lucky" button google used to have.
@matrix@element also the internet came from millions of people pouring their hearts and souls into working on something they love. the internet did not come from getting funding from police. sure there are parts of the internet that have been funded by government agencies who I wish would cease to exist. have I spent time fighting that too? yes. yes I have.
@matrix@element thats a really unnecessarily terse reply Matrix (Matthew?) You chose by your own process to set up a booth at a police convention to attract police to use your services. You could have simply not made that decision. Yes there is other software that has gone down this path. does that mean I or other community members support that decision? no it does not.
I talked to David King (https://primal.net/dk) about Nostr vs Bluesky today. He made a video and put it online. Folks might find it interesting. I mention the fediverse some but it wasn’t the focus of the discussion.
has anyone done any calculations on how much money all in all has been spent on the fediverse? sort of an impossible task but would be interesting to see an attempt. all the server bills so far, all the donations to all the projects etc
@slothrop one of the main other sources of funding for fediverse stuff in recent years has been thru NGI, they have funded more fedi infra than anything else https://www.ngi.eu/?s=activitypub+
follow me for hot button topics including "maybe dont support your software project with money from the people who are consistently killing our friends"
@atomicpoet@shadowtux is that actually released? I thought work was being done but its not like anyone can just click migrate posts and have it work rn right?
Did not expect to get so many messages from people who support the cops today. Just a warning for anyone who is following me: fuck the police. If you are in support of police presence in your communities we have some deep deep disagreements in store that may not be resolvable.
I don't know what to say to anyone who supports the fucking cops in 2023 other then you have been living under a rock. Anyone with a conscience and any view of what police actually do that still support them are in such a bubble I don't know how to relate.
