And to finish my woolly weekend I washed a beautiful Clun Forest fleece. @handspinning

lisettedeboer, to FiberArts
@lisettedeboer@mastodon.social avatar

Did a serious amount of this weekend. Actually the processing before carding, to get soms decent floof out of a washed raw fleece using a flick brush, is most of the work. Making something out of raw fleece is so much work that you start really appreciating division of labour for production of most of the things you use in everyday life. At the same time it is fun to go through the whole process.

@sibylle @handspinning Yes, it is a hand crank carder. From a small company in Germany. I'm glad I bought the XXL version. And I agree that it's insightful to go through much of the process sometimes, although I didn't raise the sheep myself. And after doing so working with commercially made yarn and commercial spinning fibre feels like a luxury.

Moving on to the side wall of the from raw to pouf project. Each round is now 8 sections of 24 columns of 6 simple stitches. That is 1152 stitches per round. The side wall will be about 15 rounds... @crochet @fiberarts @handspinning

question.

I've been researching picking up stitches (for collar band on cardigan, both front and neck). I tend to get a lot of holes.

Now, I found the following tips browsing the internet, which of these would you recommend? Any other things to think about? So pick up along a side of the garment.

  • picking up ratio 3:4
  • pick up and knit (k1 p1) and next row twisted stitches
  • pick up both legs of the stitch
  • divide with markers to even the count of picked up stitches

@nobyeni @knitting I think I'd try to find a technique tuesday YT video by Roxanne Richardson about the subject.

Finished the next skein of my very large process a raw fleece into project. It started with a box of 5 kg raw from the nearby and progress is slow but satisfying. @handspinning

Skein of brown and grey 3-ply handspun yarn. It looks very squishy and rustic.

@handspinning Started making a pouf in Tunisian of the . Almost done with one skein and lots to go. Did plying and finishing for skein no. 3 today.

What's next?

I'm on the homestretch of my current project and I'm starting to think, what to take on next.

  • Finish the current sock?
  • Finally get to the gorgeous merino silk yarn in dark grey and copper, lace weight? I bought that 2 years ago with the idea of turning it into a loose cowl or so (I'm not a shawl person, but sometimes my neck needs a bit of extra warmth).
  • Use some lace weight linen yarn, inkjet printed blue and make a long cardigan. I have 2.500 m

@FanCityKnits @knitting I like alternating larger projects with small projects, so I can have the good feeling of finishing something every now and then, and keep interested in the larger project. So I'd probably start the cardigan and finish the sock. And then the gorgeous cowl alongside the cardi.

@knitting update on the - just one more sleeve and then the collar.

I still need to pick out some buttons, but I have no idea what kind I would like. Any suggestions?

lisettedeboer,
@lisettedeboer@mastodon.social avatar

@Axiom @knitting @fiberarts I’d want most attention to go to the lovely sleeves, so keep buttons modest in shape and colour.

Finished this longtime project witn yesterday and I don't really like it 🤷‍♀️ Let's see if it gets better after wearing it for some time.

lisettedeboer,
@lisettedeboer@mastodon.social avatar

@Carex I don't see a point in selling items. If I won't wear it I may just frog it to reclaim the yarn and make something that I like better. First I'll try wearing it around the house. Maybe the fabric will get more drape and look better after a while.

I knitted!!! Omg I'm so excited! It's taken me about 3 or 4 hours and wow was casting off nerve-wracking! But I did it!

Does it get less painful as you get better at it? Or should I just wear a glove and a thimble?

@alexisbushnell @knitting Being mostly a crocheter I like casting off with a hook:

And yes it takes practice to relax your hands and have just enough muscle tension to keep going.

Speaking of favourite tools for #yarnuary ...

Does anyone have a favourite beeswax or other wood finish you'd recommend for knitting needles? These knitting needles are in need of refinishing as the tips are getting kind of rough. If possible, I'd like something I could buy in smaller quantities as I'm not finishing a whole dresser or floor.

Boosts appreciated!

@terri @knitting I've not knitted enough to run into this good trouble. I think I'd use some fine sanding paper and then transparent shoe polish.

But hey, look at the pictures: it's absolutely doable. In fact, seems rather easy actually.

Taking note for my next cardigan.

What's your recent lightbulb about knitting?

lisettedeboer,
@lisettedeboer@mastodon.social avatar

@FanCityKnits @knitting @fiberarts A very simple trick for knitting on circulars with a screwed on cable: take a left hand needle one size down. Makes the stitches slide more easily.

Fiber artists of the Fedi! I'm looking for some yarn.

Lace or fingering
White/undyed
Silk + merino/BFL (maybe another fiber, silk is a for sure tho)

NOT looking for budget options (pls no Knit Picks recs). I am looking for a lux yarn to create essentially a heirloom piece.

Something that would hold up to dyeing if I decide to go with a color in the future would be good.

I think I found one!

@EU_Commission And don't forget to visit the statue of Erasmus whenever you are in Rotterdam. It has a pretty wild history.
https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/erasmus-statue-rotterdam-netherlands

The nearby public library has a permanent exhibition - the Erasmus Experience - to learn more about him.

The work of Erasmus is surprisingly accessible reading even today. For example In Praise of Folly that was written in 1509.
