Thinking about that twitter spaces disaster.

I mean how hard can it be to serve ~1M streams - YouTube does it every day - right?

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@steely_glint actually from what I know, Spaces used an SFU approach for active speakers (so no mixing), and relied on Periscope or something Periscope-ish for passive listeners, so lower latency than a CDN but still sort of a CDN

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@steely_glint I don't know as I've never used it myself, but I guess that may be the case, unless this Periscope-ish thing is really low latency (in which case the delay would be barely noticeable). I did a presentation at FOSDEM just a few months ago on how to do this using WebRTC alone, or with the help of a CDN

My wife took this shot of Kirk Hammett last night at Stade de France. To me, it captures the pure joy of live music and heavy metal.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@killyourfm did he relearn hope to play guitar in the meanwhile? 😁
(just kidding of course, I'm jealous you got to see them live! As a Marty Friedman fan myself I do like poking a little fun at good old Kirk 😄)

From yesterday's stream, my [poor] attempt at playing Loriciel's l'Aigle d'Or : Le Retour is suddently cut short by pressing "X" on the keyboard which is apparently the self destruct button...?

Italian streamer is surprised because obscure French game gets suddenly cut-off by the pressing X on the keyboard which is apparently the "crash" button

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@damianogerli it gives me some Project Firestart vibes, looking at the screenshots, is it that kind of game? Or is it indeed closer to what cinematic platformers became after PoP, Another World and Flashback?

Seeing charge €55 for T-shirts in their Paris pop up store honestly makes me love the band just a little bit less.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@killyourfm my Dream Theater t-shirt at the concert store was 40€, and considering how crappy its quality is, I felt a bit robbed too 😂
I can accept higher prices for t-shirts, since for most bands merchandise is the ON;LY way to get money (they certainly don't get a buck from Spotify & co, and touring is expensive). I wouldn't say Metallica need that kind of dough, though

Hey @darmato , what are your views on tipping? Restaurants in Seattle (and I'm sure other cities) are doing "no tipping" where they add 20% to you bill. I have always hated tipping and this seem worse. I've stopped going to these restaurants, but it's getting harder to avoid them. Just raise your prices by 20% and be done with it. But people are stupid and I understand why that doesn't work.

Being in Iceland where there no tipping has been a huge eye opener.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@grumpygamer @darmato yeah the reliance of US on heavy tipping has always been so bizarre to me. In Iceland as you pointed out there's no such thing; in Italy we just round whatever the number is up to a certain extent, but it's a courtesy; in Japan tipping is actually considered disrespectful and insulting by the servers, who all claim to do their best already and without the need for a tip to perform even better. Dominic's thread has been really interesting to read for an insight though!

When did restuarants decide we needed fancy breads with such hard crusts that our gums bleed??? Can we just go back to regular soft breads again?

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@flipsideza I guess it depends what you mean by hard. In Italy for instance (at least here in the south) we very much prefer our table bread to be crunchy. I personally don't like soft bread at all (when it comes to the crust that is)

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@leoncowle @flipsideza I love the edges of the bread in particular, which here we call "cucuzzolo": just pure crust, and so the hardest of it all! 😂

Spell checking on the Mac is really bad. It can't suggest a correction for "proces" -> "process". It's surprising the number of misspellings off by a single letter that it can't correct. I would have thought spell checking was a solved problem.

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@grumpygamer it's can't even suggest a correction for "it's can't"! 😄

Took advantage of another national holiday here in Italy to add a plugin-based architecture to KIAVC, my game engine: the idea is to allow people to add functions and features not natively available in the core. Still very early stages, but it already allowed me to implement, e.g., a dumb rain particle system. Feedback welcome, especially if you have ideas on what makes sense as a plugin, and what should always be in the core instead!

About 20 years ago I wrote "The Shoggath Chronicles" laying down the ground rules for a series of point and click adventure games that were supposed to take place in said universe.
The first chapter was Prin'Dolep for which I wrote the design bible and the full story. The game though was never developed, I designed a couple of rooms and characters.
Now the question is: should I add the unfinished game to Unseen64 or something like that or take up the idea and do it? Perhaps in Inkle?

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@damianogerli @MichaelKlamerus I've always wanted to create a point and click adventure and can't draw either, so I started writing my own engine to procrastinate and still feel like I'm actually doing it 😁

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to TRY to accurately measure my power consumption doing daily work tasks on my big tower PC, the Steam Deck, and the HP Dev One laptop. (Using a Kill-A-Watt P3).

ALSO? Gaming power consumption comparisons between my desktop PC & the Xbox Series X, both at 4K resolution.

I expect it will be an eye-opening experience and I'll never turn on my tower again.

This will undoubtedly branch off into all kinds of software testing too. YES, I'll record & share data...

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@killyourfm Fedora Linux with which desktop environment, though? Gnome and KDE are known resource hogs compared to XFCE and others for instance. Or is this part of the software analysis that will follow?

I hadn't touched the KIAVC code in a while, so I decided to freeze a version and create a first (very) alpha release for Linux and Windows. Comes with the demo too, if you want to give that a try without having to compile. Feedback welcome!

@john_fisherman @DavidBFox I sometimes wish Mastodon worked like Tandem, so that I could correct broken Italian sentences inline when I see it 😄 Jokes apart, it's "appetito", not "apetitto": it's a mistake I often see from English native speakers, not sure if it's to make pronunciation easier to remember?

After a too long music hiatus (I'm lazy!), I found some energy to work on a new instrumental EP:

https://lminiero.bandcamp.com/album/axiom

Heavily inspired by 70s/80s music, with several homages to bands/artists I love. The title is a bit of a pun: my axiom is guitars, and it has "axe" in the title (got it? 🪓 =🎸 😂)

All recorded using @pipewire's JACK shim, rather than native JACK, and @ardour 7.2 (both absolutely amazing!) +other FOSS as usual.

I hope you'll give it a chance, feedback and boosts appreciated!

@fedora does that mean flathub packages would be available via dnf? If so, how would conflicts with existing packages be handled? (e.g., flathub Firefox vs regular Firefox)

lminiero,
@lminiero@fosstodon.org avatar

@cassidy @fedora thanks for the clarification! I'm usually not a big fan of flatpak, snap, etc. (they're often a waste of a space due to a ton of duplicated dependencies), even though they're sometimes the only source of specific packages, so I was wondering if that could cause issues in general

If you missed my "Become a rockstar using FOSS!" talk in yesterday, the team is amazing and made a video recording available already!

This is a direct link to the video since it's not in the talk page yet, but eventually it will be added there too. Now get your guitar out of that closet, dust it off, and make some noise 😁

Hi all!

I'm a developer from Italy: I created and maintain the open source Janus WebRTC Server as part of my daily job. But open source is a big part of my life, not just work!

For fun, I like to create music using only tools (you can listen to my work on Bandcamp, Soundcloud and more). Besides, I recently started working on a new open source point and click adventure engine called KIAVC (Neapolitan translation of SCUMM 😁 )
