Alarm as German climate activists charged with ‘forming a criminal organisation’ - https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/23/alarm-as-german-climate-activists-charged-with-forming-a-criminal-organisation has lost its mind: it's gone from climate hero to climate criminal...

@glynmoody This criminalization of peaceful climate protest could have a backfire effect of more violent climate protests in the future - criminal damage to fossil fuel infrastructure. If you're going to be criminalized for peaceful protest then why not go the whole hog?

Companies today are trying to putting Generative AI into everything with the same enthusiasm that they put Radium into consumer products in the 1930s

You get to make one change to any single genus of animal that’s immediately applied to all of its members worldwide.

What do you change for maximum chaos?

@NanoRaptor hen's eggs explode 6 hours after laying if not defused by solving the ball-bearing maze built into the shells

I tried reading Consider Phlebas by Iain Banks but couldn’t get more than a few pages in to it. It got great reviews so it’s just not my cup of tea 🫖.
Instead I started The Lies of the Ajungo by Moses Ose Utomi and am liking it so far.

I would also recommend Player of Games as a good starting point to the Culture novels. My book group enjoyed it including one member who'd previously tried and not liked Consider Phlebas.

I am currently game-less.
None of the games I’ve been waiting for will be released for at least 3 months and so I’m looking for recommendations please!

I’m looking for PC only.
I have game pass plus most other launchers/libraries.

Some franchises/games I’ve enjoyed: Fallout, Hellblade, SOMA, Bioshock, God of War, Quern, Talos Principle, Portal, Horizon, Edith Finch, Spiritfarer, To the Moon, Witcher 3, Assassins Creed.

    Does anyone know anything about computers? I've heard pros and cons about pre-built computers. I also don't know much about what parts are worth buying, especially GPUs.

    magnetichuman,
    @magnetichuman@cupoftea.social avatar

    @An0n
    Reasons to self-build:

    1. You know exactly what spec/components you want.
    2. You think you'll enjoy the process of building.
    3. You are trying to squeeze the best spec you can out of a limited budget.
      If none apply they definitely get a pre-built.

    @An0n
    I found Pcpartpicker build guides very helpful when deciding on my last spec.

    Ever since the LLM boom started, I've been saying that AI code generation's biggest impact will be to increase the burden on highly-skilled programmers to wade through the mountains of code created by less-skilled programmers.

    The fact that I had to struggle mightily to write code when I was less skilled is how I gained the skill I have. Feels like AI code generation is stunting the development of the next generation of programmers. https://justin.searls.co/shots/2023-10-17-08h04m28s/

    @searls Depends how it's used of course, though your example doesn't fill one with hope.
    Personally, I find that GPT3 helps me solve coding problems that might otherwise require hours trawling through documentation.

    openrightsgroup, to privacy
    @openrightsgroup@social.openrightsgroup.org avatar

    Meta is proposing a paid option to opt-out of advertising on Instagram and Facebook. It's basically extortion to have your right to #privacy protected.

    Ads can and should be delivered without resorting to illegal #surveillance that violates users' rights and exposes them to predatory or discriminatory advertising.

    If #Meta can't conduct their business legally, that should be their problem to solve not ours.

    ORG's @marianods responds.

    magnetichuman,
    @magnetichuman@cupoftea.social avatar

    @openrightsgroup @marianods
    Presumably 'opt out of ads' means you won't SEE ads but Meta will still track your behaviour so not much of a gain in terms of privacy.
