Maths/CogSci/MathPsych lazyweb: Are there any algebras in which you have subtraction but don't have negative values? Pointers appreciated. I am hoping that the abstract maths might shed some light on a problem in cognitive modelling.

The context is that I am interested in formal models of cognitive representations and I want to represent things (e.g. cats), don't believe that we should be able to represent negated things (i.e. I don't think it should be able to represent anti-cats), but it makes sense to subtract representations (e.g. remove the representation of a cat from the representation of a cat and a dog, leaving only the representation of the dog).

This might also be related to non-negative factorisation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-negative_matrix_factorization

@RossGayler @Heterokromia @cogsci to me it seems you need to be more clear on your requirements. Are your non-negative and multidimensional requirements independent, as far as you can tell?

If so, a multidimensional (do you know how many dimensions/animals you have?) modulo space sounds a viable solution. That'd be something denoted as https://www.HostMath.com/Show.aspx?Code=%5Cmathbb%7BZ%7D_k%5En , with k being the cardinality of one dimension (would they need to have different cardinalities?), and n being the number of dimensions.

@KathyReid@aus.social avatar

Like many other technologists, I gave my time and expertise for free to because the content was licensed CC-BY-SA - meaning that it was a public good. It brought me joy to help people figure out why their code wasn't working, or assist with a bug.

Now that a deal has been struck with to scrape all the questions and answers in Stack Overflow, to train models, like , without attribution to authors (as required under the CC-BY-SA license under which Stack Overflow content is licensed), to be sold back to us (the SA clause requires derivative works to be shared under the same license), I have issued a Data Deletion request to Stack Overflow to disassociate my username from my Stack Overflow username, and am closing my account, just like I did with Reddit, Inc.

https://policies.stackoverflow.co/data-request/

The data I helped create is going to be bundled in an and sold back to me.

In a single move, Stack Overflow has alienated its community - which is also its main source of competitive advantage, in exchange for token lucre.

Stack Exchange, Stack Overflow's former instantiation, used to fulfill a psychological contract - help others out when you can, for the expectation that others may in turn assist you in the future. Now it's not an exchange, it's .

Programmers now join artists and copywriters, whose works have been snaffled up to create solutions.

The silver lining I see is that once OpenAI creates LLMs that generate code - like Microsoft has done with Copilot on GitHub - where will they go to get help with the bugs that the generative AI models introduce, particularly, given the recent GitClear report, of the "downward pressure on code quality" caused by these tools?

While this is just one more example of , it's also a salient lesson for folks - if your community is your source of advantage, don't upset them.

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@j3j5 @blogdiva @KathyReid this appears to be only an opinion, which 1) doesn't appear very informed to me, and 2) only mentions code-related issues, and does not address them.

More precisely, clearly when talking of code, this is not part of the process used:
"Diffusion models like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney take these inputs, add “noise” to them, corrupting them, and then train neural networks to remove the corruption."
Neither is this:
"This is because using the digitized books as part of the database provided information about the books and did not use them for their creative content"

Also, regarding the court's inverse question, it seems to me that this is an extremely valid concern:
"On this point, the court wrote that the better question to answer was not how much of the works [company] copied, but instead how much was available to users". Due to the granularity of SO, this could easily be 100%, even though this would need to be illustrated (=proven) as in the NYT case.

Could anyone identify "substantial, non infringing uses" of the SO data? Here using CC might make it difficult to establish what was the original interest of the contributor.

Final note, to me it remains a bit unclear what is the relevance of the Oracle Vs Google case according to the author.

@mastodonmigration @KathyReid to the ignorant that I am, this sounds legally feasible, but economically challenging. That's a lot of content and maintaining it on a live platform is associated with notable costs. Not a reason to stop someone from trying, rather an argument to plan ahead.

@j3j5 @blogdiva @KathyReid excuse me, actually at a second thought BERT and GPT are exactly doing corrupt-and-train on the dataset. This certainly weakens my interpretation. Apologies for the confusion.

I don't admire Mike Johnson: he has terrible, regressive views, and given the power, he would make our country tremendously worse for most people who don't look like him and believe what he believes.

But, given his awful approach to the world, I am impressed that he has pursued necessary bipartisan action that approaches statespersonlike behavior in preventing government shutdown, deters Russian expansionism, and counters dysfunction.

“I don’t understand why everything is so fucked up and we seem incapable of fixing any of it!”

This is because you believe you live in a democracy when you actually live under capitalism.

(And it is functioning exactly as designed.)

PS. Not your fault; you’ve been taught your whole life that the two are complementary when they’re diametrically-opposed.

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@aral I'd be very curious to hear how democracy without capitalism could be structured (putting aside for now the more interesting question of how the corresponding transition from the current state would happen).

The closest to a response I can think of is the ideas of Cornelius Castoriadis, but as many other things in life, it shows that the problem is that it's us not doing enough for a change:

Reality...

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@freemo @avlcharlie well, unless people attempt to develop some level of sophistication, efficiency turns into greed, because thoughtless accumulation is the easiest thing to do. This is reinforced by a social environment where chronic accumulators are considered successful by chronically accumulating media.

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@freemo @avlcharlie maximisers would invest for profitability and not for sustainability. Clearly this conversation is way too abstract and way too generalising, but rich people investing in cheap resources is a real problem in times of pressing change.

Optimising is by definition deprived of vision, ask effective altruists ;)

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@freemo @avlcharlie the problem is that environmental cost are not part of the final price. Instead they are internalised by those with weaker negotiation power.

Examples:

  • miners from poor countries pay with their lives to extract resources that unaccountable mine owners then can sell at competitive prices
  • wildlife gets pushed away from investment-grade land

I can go on with Amazonian rainforest, Russian taiga, Australian Coral reefs, African rhinos, l Mediterranean fish, orangutans, polar bears,...

mapto,
@mapto@qoto.org avatar

@volkris @freemo @avlcharlie I agree with your other comment.

My diagreement is not with the current calculation of the costs. I claim that any explicit calculation by default (due to the complexity of the real world) excludes some implicit aspect that optimisers then readily ignore.

Also, utility is not only contextual, but subjective. To someone a million dollars might be enough to secure a lifetime, to someone else it could be enough to buy a house, to a third person, it might mean buying some nice nice stuff to show off.

Hey @freemo , is it that an RSS-to-mastodon service at https://feedsin.space/ is blocked on ? I've been using this a lot from my Bulgarian-language account, and I just noticed I don't have access from here.

I find such services very useful. If there is an intentional block in place, could you share the reasons and if you could suggest alternative ways to follow RSS feeds from here? Just trying to understand if there's a solution that would work for everyone. Thanks!
