Holy shit 💀 I’m glad the StarLite pre order was so successful! Can’t wait to get my hands on it

🤔it occurs to me that the best way to get good support for a linux hardware thing is to guarantee the team members behind your favorite distro each gets one sent to them.

Similarly if you want to buy hardware with good support from it you should get whatever those team members are loving.

I made a little website for my book. Before I publish it, is there any feedback you have? Does it answer all your questions? Are there bugs? Is anything missing? Thank you! ❤️

@Meyerweb photophobic people who have trouble with how damn bright the web is (like me) browse with tools like Dark Reader. Here’s what i saw whaen i viewed it on my phone.

I know this is niche and nitpicky, but it is an accessibility issue, and it’s a book about accessibility .

I'm seriously thinking about quitting Duolingo, because the more advanced the conjugations get the less clue i have what the fuck is going on because they literally Never explain Anything.

Ex. In "el" means "from" & "de" means "of"

I came FROM the United States
Mi venis EL Usono.

The House OF Usher
La domo DE Usher.

and yet, it's insisting that when you go FROM France to Germany it's

...DE Francio al Germanio

and that EL Franco is definitely wrong.

WHY?!

@HighlandLawyer @jrdnzr I had 100% forgotten that the PMEG existed. When I first encountered it I didn't have enough vocabulary.

Just glanced at it now and it seems I have enough to muddle through & get the missing words from context. :D Yay learning. 🎉

Minor Update re the tool I've been working on for a friend for whom Apple's palm rejection absolutely refuses to work.

We've prototyped the cover + hole shape over the trackpad & it got a 👍. Now I've gone back and added 4mm thick leather wrist wrests & there's an internal cable run for charging the trackpad.

the lighter colored "wood" in the picture is a magnetically attached plate that we can swap out if he / anyone else needs a different hole shape.

This leaf is green, just like all the leaves behind it.

Related question: what is the deal with this particular type of cable and external hard drives?

Why does this cable exist?

It doesn’t seem like it can be a throughput speed thing because it’s a standard USB-A on the other end. But we’ve gotten multiple drives over the years that have this cable. I don’t understand.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

Da hell is this for?!

I just found a USB-C to lightning cable. I feel like this is Apple’s way of giving people the finger.

It’s like “ fuck you. We don’t want to stop making lightning cables we like them and we don’t care what you want.”

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@massa OK but as that data and power are both successfully passing through a USB-A on the other end why make this thing? Why not just have it be USB-A at both ends? This USB had long since become cheap commodity hardware.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@flaki yes. The other end is USB-A, which is why I am so confused.

Er it’s blue nevermind.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@flaki to be clear I don’t know what the difference between white and blue is. And I feel like surely it would’ve been cheaper to use USB-A at both ends. Does having a socket for one of these things make something easier with circuit board design?

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@massa ahh. Thanks. I was extremely expecting to get answers on these. 🙇‍♀️

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@masto heh. It was getting hard to close a while ago, so i threw out all the cables that only worked in devices we didn't have anymore. I also threw out like half of the USB-A to USB-micro and i still have like 10 of them somehow. 🤦‍♀️

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@massa I meant in the sense of why not use a standard USB-A cable with one male and one female end? If whatever's passing through it has to work in USB-A at one end why introduce a different end to the cable (with a conversion chip?)?

Why not use the cheap commodity connection on both ends? HOw does introducing this different funky, and presumably more expensive end benefit the manufacturer or the consumer?

I'm trying to get to the WHY BOTHER rather than the what.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@massa 🤔 Hmm, "because that's what Jack did and no-one cared enough to argue the point" is a pretty common reason for WTFs in software dev.

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@sammycola I feel like an idiot but I'm just not getting how it helps anything to have a cable with one end with lots of "cool features" if the other end being "bog standard" like, either the bog standard end DOES support all the cool features, in which case "why bother?" OR it doesn't in which case "why bother?"

[edit Someone else gave me the missing piece. USB micro doesn't support USB 3.0. They wanted thin, but couldn't use micro. ]

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

@slembcke I think you may have given me the missing piece of the puzzle.

The thing about me being a BDFL for is that it has the D in there. I have the means and ability to push for just about anything I like. I say that I truly try to be a benevolent dictator, but then I presume quite a few dictators would say so.

Next week I will tell you all about how I view this dictatorship and how it is not quite like a dictatorship of a country since in our case, everyone could just leave if I misbehave.

After talking about how wonderful it is to write on the Remarkable 2, grey proceeds to talk about how you have to approach working with e-ink tablets.

ultimately, he suggest that you have to treat them like paper. I mostly agree with that.

however, I’ve mostly switched back to paper notebooks because I can flip through them and easily go back-and-forth between my table of contents and the referenced pages looking for that thing I wrote

Do ANY of you have experience with gender stuff via Dartmoth Hitchcock hospitals in or know someone who has?

Because they literally refuse to give me ANY information that isn't on their web site without a referral. Like not even "we require 2 letters"

Obviously I'm not going to ask for a referral to a place that refuses to answer ANY questions and whom I may not even meet the basic requirements of.
