@Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge can either of you think of any reason I either should not switch from RHEL to CentOS Stream on my desktop/laptops or any considerations I should be thinking of that I might be missing?

In my mind I'm just going to get the new patches faster from a different build system signed by a different gpg key. I also don't have to deal with subman. Am I missing some big consideration I'm not thinking about? I'm nervous I have a blind spot. 🤔

@acdingman @Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge the slow moving base system is a feature and I'm a fan. YMMV. 🙂

@acdingman @Conan_Kudo @carlwgeorge totally fair and understandable, fortunately we have options! 😁

The number one reason I buy a new laptop is battery life, not performance. Maybe I'm a tiny minority of the market and nobody will make one but I would love to see a good solid premium device with a big battery and something like an Intel Core i3-N305 that has nothing but efficiency cores but still decent performance. Then paired with power saving components, fwupd support, and upstream Linux kernel support with like 15+ hours of real world battery life. I'd pay illogical money for such a device

The new Linux phone from Jolla & its benefits? ⛵ :linux:

◉Sailfish OS - the only independent commercial mobile OS
◉Sailfish is NOT 100% closed source - Jolla plans to open the remaining blobs
◉More "Linuxy" than Android; Qt / Wayland / filesystem
◉Free of Google / Apple
◉Use Android compatibility in case an :android: app is needed
◉Jolla is a Finnish company - 🇫🇮 / 🇮🇸 are considered most trustworthy nations in Europe

@Linux they won't ship to the USA, same as all their products since the failed attempt at a tablet years ago. ☹️

maxamillion,

@Linux @Kernellinux can't buy any of their products though, software or hardware.

I currently run RHEL everywhere on my personal infrastructure (desktops, laptops, servers, homelab, etc), but sometimes I consider moving to CentOS Stream on my desktop/laptop devices for the faster access to in-flight features and bug fixes that roll out between RHEL release windows. 🤔

@rfc2549 @vwbusguy fwiw, it's all based on the open source (Apache 2) Granite models

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@rfc2549 @vwbusguy "based on" == "the services are using those models" (I realized my phrasing wasn't very clear)

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@rfc2549 @vwbusguy but the model is open source also

maxamillion,

@rfc2549 @vwbusguy understood. AI is definitely a largely nuanced space and absolutely bigger than any one company.

IBM is releasing a family of Granite code models to the open-source community. The aim is to make coding as easy as possible — for as many developers as possible.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu I don't know what that means in this context.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu it's an AI model, so yes?

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@WolfLink @poVoq open source is a development model, not a business model, if you don't provide value beyond the bits then you're going to have a hard time but a copyleft license ensures the playing field is level and no vendor can take your code and extend it with added functionality without releasing that code too

I'm just going to say it, and we can agree to disagree if you do in fact disagree...

systemd has categorically made Linux better in basically every way imaginable

It's earnestly cool if you don't agree but it's really really good

I'm back on RHEL for all my computers, I'm done messing around with weird inconsistencies and unexpected changes in updates. I love the innovation of upstream and all the wonderful madness of the bazaar, but I don't have time to drink from the fire hose these days.

I'm super grateful for all the exceptional and hard work the RHEL team at Red Hat does and the Fedora EPEL community. ❤️

Love you wonderful humans, stay awesome!

@Conan_Kudo @vwbusguy @adamw I wonder what sort of gymnastics TinyCore is doing to make theirs to small ... still not floppy small but it's REALLY small by today's standards

So, I'm an LTS Linux kind of guy. You know, Ubuntu LTS, openSUSE Leap, Debian, etc., but I've been wanting to give @kde Plasma 6 a try. I was experiencing too many issues on openSUSE Tumbleweed so I decided to give KDE Neon a try. Using Neon just reinforces my love for LTS Linux distributions. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with Neon but the bleeding edge is a bit too much for me.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@cmccullough same. I'm in the RHEL camp by preference and profession but I keep a couple debian machines around for good measure. I have so much respect for all the LTS distros. 👍👍
