IBM is releasing a family of Granite code models to the open-source community. The aim is to make coding as easy as possible — for as many developers as possible.

@deshipu I don't know what that means in this context.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@deshipu it's an AI model, so yes?

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@WolfLink @poVoq open source is a development model, not a business model, if you don't provide value beyond the bits then you're going to have a hard time but a copyleft license ensures the playing field is level and no vendor can take your code and extend it with added functionality without releasing that code too

I'm just going to say it, and we can agree to disagree if you do in fact disagree...

systemd has categorically made Linux better in basically every way imaginable

It's earnestly cool if you don't agree but it's really really good

I'm back on RHEL for all my computers, I'm done messing around with weird inconsistencies and unexpected changes in updates. I love the innovation of upstream and all the wonderful madness of the bazaar, but I don't have time to drink from the fire hose these days.

I'm super grateful for all the exceptional and hard work the RHEL team at Red Hat does and the Fedora EPEL community. ❤️

Love you wonderful humans, stay awesome!

I've renewed my enjoyment of writing bash scripts, it's super fun. 🙂

@adamw pfft. I don't need a support group. I can quit anytime I want. I just don't want to.... >.>

@adamw you know what the messed up part of that proposal is? that actually sounds fun to me 🙃

@Conan_Kudo @vwbusguy @adamw I wonder what sort of gymnastics TinyCore is doing to make theirs to small ... still not floppy small but it's REALLY small by today's standards

So, I'm an LTS Linux kind of guy. You know, Ubuntu LTS, openSUSE Leap, Debian, etc., but I've been wanting to give @kde Plasma 6 a try. I was experiencing too many issues on openSUSE Tumbleweed so I decided to give KDE Neon a try. Using Neon just reinforces my love for LTS Linux distributions. Absolutely NOTHING wrong with Neon but the bleeding edge is a bit too much for me.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@cmccullough same. I'm in the RHEL camp by preference and profession but I keep a couple debian machines around for good measure. I have so much respect for all the LTS distros. 👍👍

of my 2006 D620 prosumer laptop running .

Saved it from becoming back in 2009.

Stock apart from replacing the OS ( XP) and the original HDD for an SSD.

Working fine, surprisingly snappy. Posting from it as we speak.

@governa can it handle electron apps or is JavaScript too slow on that hardware? I feel like JavaScript has been both amazing and horrible for the web, but explicitly terrible for performance and I hope wasm can save us.

Random thought of the evening: The Garmin Vivoactive 5 is as close to a perfect smartwatch for me personally that has ever existed. Highly recommend!

It's just enough smart features without being overboard, no subscription required for any features, the AMOLED display is gorgeous, it gets ~10 days of battery life on a single charge, and it's astounding how light weight it is (36g including the watch band). Seriously can't recommend it enough.

@vwbusguy @brian I didn't think you could get those in the USA. 🤔

TIL!

@vwbusguy @brian oh wild, that's a bummer. Samsung Fit was underrated and they really only needed to fix a few things and it would have been an awesome device.

Dear junior to mid career technologists,

You deserve to be here, you are good enough. The imposter syndrome is normal. Try to find comfort in knowing you are not alone, we all experience imposter syndrome and for most of us it never fully goes away. I am a Distinguished Engineer at Red Hat, have over 20 years experience, a BS and MS of Computer Science, multiple patents pending, and I still have that feeling sometimes. You are not alone. You do belong. We are a community. Be kind to yourself ❤️

maxamillion, to IBM
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

I feel like a lot of people dog on IBM a lot, which I guess is fair is some respects but also they funded Linux development back in the late 1990s and early 2000s when zero other large (S&P or Fortune 500) companies were investing in Linux. They did so with a $1 Billion USD endowment, roughly $1.85B in today's money if we adjust for inflation. Also, the Container revolution might not have happened if IBM hadn't developed LXC and contributed it upstream. 🤔

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tekchip I didn't say IBM, or any company, should be excused for their mistakes just because they do open source contributions. Nor did I attempt to encapsulate over 100 years of nuance in a few hundred characters of a toot, but I think credit is due where it is for open source contributions. I don't think people understand how much big companies like IBM, Dell, and Oracle legitimized Linux to the world at a pivotal moment in history. Not to mention the knock on effects because of it.

maxamillion,
@maxamillion@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tekchip fair point, adding context is always valuable 👍
