@evan @enantiomer I think I have almost all of Spinrad's books and most of the novellas.
This one hasn't aged well in some ways, but probably in my top 5 of his. It's a very uncomfortable read but a powerful story.

@evan @enantiomer "Spinrad had difficulty finding a publisher willing to print Bug Jack Barron as a book. Publisher Michael Moorcock printed the novel in installments in the magazine New Worlds. The newsstand company WHSmith refused to distribute one of the issues because of the installment of Spinrad's novel. The Arts Council of Great Britain, which subsidized New Worlds, put public pressure on WHSmith and forced the company to distribute the issue. This led to denunciations of Spinrad, The Arts Council, and New Worlds in the British Parliament.[" (From Wikipedia)

@evan @enantiomer " In 1983, author Harlan Ellison was hired to write a screenplay for a film to be directed by Costa-Gavras for Universal Pictures. After the project went nowhere, Ellison published this screenplay, titled "None of the Above," including casting suggestions that had Martin Sheen as Jack Barron and Sigourney Weaver as Sara"

Fucking Ellison! Because of course!

I would love to get a copy of the screen play...

(Probably should have added early on. I should have written a thesis on Spinrad.)

I happened to wake up and look at the clock at exactly 1:59am and got to watch it tick over to 3:00.

Just spent 2+ hours using ChatGPT to try and debug some code and who is it who solved the problem?! --> human me<-- that's who!

@fifilamoura Exactly. I seem to be all about overdoing it and then seeking comfort from the consequences of my own actions.

@fifilamoura post-hoc rationalization is my favourite rationalization!

I read this when it came out in 1991 and thought it was the absolutely coolest thing ever.

Finally got around to putting pronouns in all my email signatures.

I started leaning on the "Ann" part of my name when I lived in Europe and there was no obvious way to communicate that my first name didn't match my gender (i.e. Michele with only L and no accent is masculine).

Declaring pronouns is just another example of normalizing accessibility being a benefit to everyone.

Whenever I use the word "short" in an expression e.g. "I came up short" "sorry if I was short with you" "I stopped short of..." it feels like a self-referential play on words but, then I remember, on the internet nobody knows you're short!

@ericg ok, some people on the internet know I am short.

@bookish Oh, now I want to look at the expressions with "tall" too...

Alabama ruled frozen embryos are children.

Meanwhile, Alabama eliminated its summer food program for children who’ve actually been born.

@micheleann@eldritch.cafe avatar

@tristansnell they should have stayed embryos, duh.

A some point I jokingly started to mimic Owen Wilson when I say "wow" and now I cannot stop.

Reading something terribly interesting (to me), alone in my office and just exclaiming "Wow" "Hmm" "Wow" in Owen Wilson voice.

Help me.

Please note that if your 2FA requires me to pick up my phone in order to get into that thing I need to work on, I will 100% get distracted by something else on my phone and not get back to the laptop until the authentication has expired.
