Blaise Pascal says “human beings will naturally seek distractions rather than confront their own thoughts in moments of solitude and quiet because those thoughts will eventually lead them to consider unpleasant matters such as their own mortality, the vanity of their endeavors, and the general frailty of the human condition.”

Which of these are you trying to avoid the most?

I had too much sugar today and it's entirely my fault and I was totally aware that it was happening but I still would like some extenuating circumference to blame, please.

Is Socratic irony a good way to engage in conversation?

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Socratic_irony

micheleann,
@micheleann@eldritch.cafe avatar

@evan It's making the other people unpack the actual meaning and not trust your literal words. That said, sometimes you want to throw people off / make them work for it.

It's kinda a scam that my whole life I've been using "egg dye kits" when it's just literally boiling water, vinegar, and food coloring...

I think it's just "Purpose is null" that's really resonating for me at the moment.

Update: I did get this code working.

Series of hot takes because why not:

  1. Every golf course must be seedbombed or turned into 15-minutes neighbourhood
  2. Being a billionaire must be banned worldwide. You have 1 billion net worth? You go to jail for life 100%
  3. Universal basic income also must be implemented worldwide
  4. People older than 60 years must be banned from being a politician
  5. Hrt must be allowed after 16, anonymously, without parents' knowledge and bullshit tests
  6. Cars must be banned in historical city centers
  7. You are cute

@alex @byte the wealthy don't live in income. The hold assets and borrow on them.
If you have a salary, even a huge one, you're not in the grossly wealthy club.

”Do you see someone going there's an opportunity to build a great content moderation company that runs on top of AT Protocol that runs on Bluesky“

Jay Graber: “We already see people starting to do that”

I feel like that if your moderation is purely for-profit, and you charge users to get moderation, then those who can't pay, and are most likely to be harmed by poor moderation, will be left to the wolves?

Like, doesn't for-profit moderation for individual users create a very weird dynamic?

@thisismissem I mean, that's how things work IRL?

I start thinking my French reading skills are getting pretty good and then I go reading half an article thinking they're mentioning wolves in some idiomatic way but actually it's magnifying glass.

micheleann,
@micheleann@eldritch.cafe avatar

"They search with (like) the wolf" sounds like a totally reasonable idiom, right?

The unexpected winners of the AI gold rush are all the user generated content sites like Reddit, Tumblr & Yelp that are selling user data to AI companies to train LLMs.

Everything you’ve ever published online is being used to train AI that will one day come for your job. Ironic.

Sales on Neil Gaiman's TROLL BRIDGE were quite robust. We have temporarily sold out and are expecting shipment in a week. THANK YOU. Here's a look at the Russian edition, which is not for sale in my store, but it's cool. And my store is here. https://adistantsoil.com/book-store/

When you come across a passage that was meant disparagingly but now just sounds like the congregation of our neighborhood third wave coffee shop:

"In the 1920s, for example, a Wall Street Journal editorial described supporters of the Progressive politician Robert La Follette as "visionaries, ne'er do wells, parlor pinks, reds, hyphenates [Americans with divided allegiance], soft handed agriculturalists and working men who have never seen a shovel."
