I've been using DuckDuckGo as my main search engine for a while now. Lately, DDG seems to "correct" my searches. A LOT. I don't know if it's just me or if it's a universal thing, but when I type in a search sometimes not only the results aren't what I was looking for, but I see the query itself has been changed to something I didn't actually search for. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating. I just might have to find a new search engine if this keeps up.
@mike I ditched DDG about a year ago and now exclusively use kagi.com. You can try it for free but if you’re a heavy user like me you’d need to use a paid tier. A few things I love include lack of ads, “lenses” which allow you to target search domains, the ability to ban sites from search results as well as up-vote sites they have the best content.
My search engine skills are failing me tonight. Does anybody know of a tool that will convert an HTML document into markdown? Linux obviously and CLI would be nice. I want to use it for a script.
I gotta say, I've been toying around with using Fabric with an ollama backend, and it's pretty slick. 100% local and I love how I can use Fabric to easily script with it. I'm still working on how I'm going to export materials to import, and how I want the exported results to save, but I've got some ideas. Of course, not sure if any of them will work completely the way I want them to.
Hey @Vivaldi, I don't suppose there's something on the horizon that would let me import a .md file to my Vivaldi notes from a command line? Realizing that's probably pretty niche, but I can think of a LOT that I would do with it.
@mike Nope, nothing like that in the pipeline, AFAIK.
You can create a feature request for it on the Forum, though. If there are plenty of upvotes, we can look into it.
Coworker1 after successful system update: "I love it when a plan comes together"
Me: I love obscure A-Team quotes.
Coworker2: Oh god, how old is that movie!
@fredonline I'm guessing a desire to milk the sense of nostalgia for a couple bucks to pad their bottom line. I vaguely remember watching it, but couldn't tell you anything about it. If I remember correctly I think they destroyed the van, but don't hold me to that.
I get that this is supposedly "stored locally" and encrypted, but I don't trust this even the slightest bit. I don't trust that Microsoft can keep its greedy mitts off that data.
@mike "stored locally" => for now
"encrypted" => but we hold the encryption key
Even if both of those things end up being actually true though, it's still a huge risk to have that data at all.
One precarious situation I can think of nearly immediately is someone in an abusive relationship. It's not uncommon for the abuser to have the abused "share" an account with them so they can snoop on anything they do. This would be that x1000 as literally anything they use the PC for is tracked.
When I was 18 and going to University, I applied for student aid because my parents weren't rich enough to help out. I was denied because I had outstanding debt. From when I was 16 months old. It took a while to get that sorted.
Look. I have kids. Quite a few of them. I love them, and I think they're downright adorable. Regardless, you won't ever see them until they're adults. I talk to them about privacy, and the risks of online life. I think it's important.
@mike My old shirts have faded slowly and gracefully, but a newer demand-printed shirt is a semi-legible mess in less than a year. I probably won't remember to turn shirts inside out but I sure will remember to stick to buying properly screen printed tees in future. 😅
Hey @Vivaldi, what's the chances I could get a "Watch Tab" feature added? Have a configurable periodic reload (already a feature obviously) in the background and just notify either through a simple dot on the tab or a popup (having that a configurable option would be nice) when the page changes?
OK, I'm not the sort that's just philosophically opposed to stuff like this. I think these LLMs have very real uses. Having said that, I'd much rather see something locally run like Ollama than having every inquiry going into the DB of Microsoft, Google, or Amazon. It's bad enough all the tracking they're already doing. This just adds a whole new vector for them to track for even more information on us.
Is sleeping on the floor good for your back. I'm not a scientist or anything, but I've slept on the floor many times since I first had children, and not once has it ever made my back feel BETTER.
“Another difference is that ancient people got more physical activity throughout the day, a lifestyle that may have helped prevent pain despite ground sleeping.”
This is the crux. I've been sleeping on a 1.5 cm thick yoga mat for over a month. I feel more in tune with my body, incentivised to exercise and not sit. Being a skateboarder most people assume it is unhealthy and causes injuries. False. All my back injuries happened because of sitting too much.
@kraftnix Memory foam is interesting. I don't know if it's still this way since we bought ours years and years ago, but we were warned when we first bought it that it would take some time to break in. At first, it's very firm. Uncomfortably so. It takes a solid week before the foam becomes more malleable and conforms. Now, it's one of the best parts about coming home from a trip. Back to my own bed.
The last couple days I've had a very weird headache. Most of the time it feels fine, but then I'll get these sudden spikes. They only last a second or two and I'm back to fine.
@mike hmm. Maybe not then... for me it's like when you bang your elbow, or trap a nerve, but is over more quickly. I don't think I'd call it a pressure feeling though.
