Is sleeping on the floor good for your back. I'm not a scientist or anything, but I've slept on the floor many times since I first had children, and not once has it ever made my back feel BETTER.

The last couple days I've had a very weird headache. Most of the time it feels fine, but then I'll get these sudden spikes. They only last a second or two and I'm back to fine.

I blame The Silence. I'm sure it's their fault.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@_hic_haec_hoc Yea, it's high, but that's normal for me. Not high as in I need a doctor's visit right now, but high as in I've been told I'm borderline hypertensive. That's been the norm for years though. It's not higher or lower than it usually is.

@dev_ric Top back. It's like a kippah of pain.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@dev_ric I'd say more like a pressure thing if I had to put a name on it. It could very well be stress.

Just submitted my final assignment of the Spring semester. All done for a couple of weeks. Now I just need to figure out what classes I'm going to take over the summer and when. The fun never stops!

@hund@fosstodon.org avatar

Can anyone recommend me a good Markdown editor? I can't seem to find anything that's based on some web engine, which tends to use its own font rendering.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@hund I either use the Notes feature in or I just use vim.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@hund Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see anybody mention Joplin?

https://joplinapp.org

I used it for a bit, but found it redundant with Notes in Vivaldi, so I stopped. It was a good editor though, open source and with a decent enough GUI. Otherwise, gVIM. Just vim with a GUI.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@hund Cloud service is entirely optional. I never used it either.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@hund Hm, never noticed. Fair enough.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@hund No, I have a 32" 4K monitor. I don't really remember how old it is, but definitely not a decade that's for sure.

First run.

@fedops Yea, we were looking at some others but weirdly this is probably not going to be mostly for me. My wife is a serial hobbyist, and she'll probably be the one that uses it the most. She's a nerd too, but not a computer nerd so ease of use was a huge factor. I heard a lot of great things about the Bambu stuff, and so far it's lived up to expectations and then some. More FOSS would be nice though.

Our corporate password policy just updated requiring our passwords to be minimum 15 characters long. Yea, this is going to end well.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@dperson That's a lot of characters. I don't know if I could reliably pull that off every time without a typo.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@jforseth210 Yea, that is one welcome change. Historically our passwords have expired every 90 days. With this change it'll be significantly longer.

mike,
@mike@fosstodon.org avatar

@Craktok No iDevices, but I can use Bitwarden.

@stardust A little. 😬

    @joel Heh, I was doing a quick test on how well Mastodon works as a REALLY rough podcast platform. It doesn't suck if you're not expecting much, but if you're looking for something more full featured it's not going to meet your needs.

    Golly, it's coming up on six years since "What are beans?"

    @popey @testman Of course, best is a subjective measure so it really depends on your goal. I lean towards as it's more full featured than , but YMMV. has also made huge strides in the voice arena, and continue to work on it. You can turn an ESP32-S3-Box-3 into a marginally capable assistant if your only goal is to control your smart home. If you want to ask it questions about the weather or actors/politicians then no. Not yet.

    What we all think counts as a non-mainstream distro, and some great examples of them in Voice of the masses. Plus ASCII maps in the terminal, another classic game is now open source, Arch on easy mode, a trip report from a nuclear power station, and more. With guest host @popey from @linuxmatters

    Yes, I'm actually this lazy.

    #!/usr/bin/bash

    INPUT_FILE=$1

    if [ ! -f ${INPUT_FILE} ]
    then
    echo "File ${INPUT_FILE} doesn't exist. Please try again."
    exit 1
    fi

    cat ${INPUT_FILE} |python3 -m piper --model en_GB-alan-medium --output-raw | aplay -r 22050 -f S16_LE -t raw -

    mike,
    @mike@fosstodon.org avatar

    @MobileOak It's a call to the piper tts engine that converts the provided file (should be text) to audio. The shell script that code is from is called read2me on my system, so I just type read2me file.txt and it reads the file out loud.

    mike,
    @mike@fosstodon.org avatar

    @golemwire I'm not familiar with spd-say, but espeak absolutely would. I'll assume they both would. I'm just more familiar with piper. I played around a lot with the old assistant, both on dedicated hardware and running on my computer. It used Mimic for it's TTS. It's primary developer was Michael Hansen, who also developed Piper. It's also the engine that's built into my setup. And who doesn't love having Popey read your news to you?
