Early iPad Pro Geekbench results (if true) make it out to be basically double the performance of my M1 Mac mini. Double the single core score, double the multicore score, and double the graphics score 👀 It's only been three years!

@stroughtonsmith imagine all of the things that you can’t do with that kind of performance.

Imagine if you had to buy a new mouse every time you bought a new Mac.

Yesterday, I published a list of things that I’m excited for in the world of technology. Including a bit about the modded iPod I’m using now.

Tech Is Still Cool.

In almost every example, the pre-Big Sur icon is better than the Big Sur-ified version.

I use Replacicon to replace many of the icons on my system with the older versions. It makes my dock look more interesting.

@gabriel I fit a little bit into each of the categories. Now I don’t know what to think. lol

it's interesting how the "let the markets decide" guys so often seem to think critics shouldn't factor into that decisionmaking at all

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@molly0xfff was Daniel saying that reviewers aren’t part of the market? Or was he being a bit loose with his language and using “market” to mean “the broader customer base”?

(I have no idea who anyone in this screenshot is. Should I?)

@chrishannah CD. Everything else is too cumbersome.

'Member when people were saying this a decade ago and everyone was like "but they're not actually working with government, so we can't do anything 🤷‍♂️" and then we found out they actually were.
Fun times.

@gabriel the first two paragraphs of the post you linked to, except it’s about the government instead of Facebook.

Maybe I’m just being nostalgic, but im starting to think that physical media is better than digital. Especially for movies.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@chrishannah I prefer purchasing physical media over paying for subscription streaming services.

But I also rip all of the movies/shows I purchase and keep them in a Plex library.

I like knowing that I actually own the media, withouting having to pay each month indefinitely, but I also like the convenience of Plex rather than swapping discs.

Looks like a day of chores and WoW Plunderstorm for me today.

I have 9 chores I want to get done. So my plan is 1 chore per hour, and playing Plunderstorm within the gaps. 😅

@chrishannah I like how your brain manages chores.

Ordered a 2015 11-inch MacBook Air from OWC last night.

I have a couple of 2011 models, but only one is functioning at the moment.

The other needs a new battery and a new trackpad, but I suspect there’s an issue with the logic board as well.

The 11-inch MacBook Air is my favorite Mac of all time. And this is (nearly) the best version — it has the i5 instead of the i7. It can run Monterey without any hacks, but I’ll probably use it as a dedicated Linux machine.

@RL_Dane not at all. I primarily use Macs and have actually grown to prefer their keyboard layout over a traditional Windows-style, even when using Linux on it.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@RL_Dane I set the right option/alt key as the compose key.

I also use Super+tab for app switching and Super+1/2/3/4 to switch between workspaces.

I’m not sure if those are default or not, so I thought I’d mention them. But I don’t think there are any other changes at all.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@RL_Dane no issues with the smaller control key. And because of its placement relative to the fn key, I find it easier to do common keyboard shortcuts for things like copy and paste on Apple keyboards than if I was using a more traditional layout with the fn key to the right of the ctrl key.

What if we all just decided to stop observing daylight savings time?

The only reason we still have it is because we keep changing the clocks when they tell us to.

As of today, I am no longer subscribed to any streaming music platforms. I dropped Spotify last year, and today I dropped Tidal.

I have an awesome and growing vinyl collection. I ripped all my CDs and have my entire digital music library on both my iPod and Plex.

I'm content with this decision. In fact I'm EXCITED about it, because I'll be spending more time enjoying and loving the heaps of music I already own.

As for discovery? Recommendations, Bandcamp, and good old fashioned music blogs.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@killyourfm love it.

As for music discovery, I’ve found YouTube, Pandora, and terrestrial radio to be useful as well. All of which can be used for free.

I wish there was an app like Amphetamine for iOS. It would be useful when I’m putting Caleb down for a nap and want to see the stopwatch section of the Clock app on screen indefinitely.
