I think I may start casually looking for a new job. I've been in my current role for 6 and a half years now, so might be time for a change.

The problem I'm having, is that my role has varied so much (changing from iOS to core backend Java applications being one example) that it's quite hard condensing it all to make it readable, but also explaining what I've been up to. 😅

In hindsight, I think the most powerful thing about quote tweets was that you could highlight behaviors and stances that were unacceptable, and at-scale that created a sense of culture.

There are quite a few posts aggressively missing my point I'd love to quote-boost, but since I can't do that here, I can only tackle things one at a time as replies. And then the cross-instance nature means many won't see that!

So that's fun.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@TechConnectify quote posting is ruder than a simple reply.

Quote posting is like grabbing everyone’s attention at the party to chastise them publicly.

A simple reply is like pulling them aside privately to discuss things in a calm and polite manner.

because VLC for macOS Ventura on Apple Silcon insta-crashed when i tried to watch an .mkv movie with it, i had to try a different player, and came across this:

@thor IINA’s an excellent app. It’s been my go to media player on macOS for a while now.

@BrodieOnLinux I use both. Mostly Wayland on Ubuntu, but also use Xorg on Nobara.

Thinking of a new home layout for my blog.
1 full post, followed by the next 19 as a condensed list, and then links to various archive pages.

I was thinking about having it just be a full archive page, but I like the idea of being able to see my most recent post straight away.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@chrishannah I dig it.

Personal preference, but I think you could have more than one full length post on the homepage and it would be a net benefit.

If you had, say, three full length on the homepage, you’re unlikely to have too much vertical scroll before you hit the footer and the people that make it to your homepage to see more of what you do can immediately read your recent articles without having to click through to another page.

That was, what, like four years ago?

⚠️ Account deletion is permanent

We receive multiple requests every week to restore accounts accounts that were previously deleted.

How can we improve this?

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@pixelfed when a user deletes their account, don’t actually delete it for 30 days. During those 30 days, the account is deactivated — appearing as deleted for all intents and purposes.

If the user logs in during that 30 day window, reactivate the account.

Continue to offer the option to delete immediately but make it difficult to find.

In retrospect, the top-aligned Apple logo now looks odd compared with the centred logo that began on the iPhone 11.

mike,
@mike@libertynode.net avatar

@BasicAppleGuy the centered Apple logo only makes sense with the removal of the regulatory text along the bottom. If that was still there, the Apple logo would and should still be positioned near the top.

I ended up switching to Nobara — installing GPU drivers and running games through Proton are pretty much seamless.

I haven’t been able to get VNC working, though. So I’m stuck using RDP for now, which isn’t supported by my preferred app — Screens.

Hopefully, once I have the system setup, I can use SSH for most of what I would want to do so the lack of VNC isn’t so annoying.

mike,

@gabriel it is not.

I source the sites I add from my RSS subscriptions and I wasn’t subscribed to your site for some reason. I just subscribed so you’ll be added.

(I only publish one new site to the directory each week and schedule them to be added in batches every handful of weeks. You’ll be in the next batch. 😀)
