What a loss. Alice Munro, 1931-2024. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/cbb4da2ef035e66b62948e2204205824a6d8457e87520f19f27beafc15828f34/XRH6DI2QEFBHTFDS5JLVJLS3PA/ Edited to add: I don’t know when I’ve grieved like this for a writer. I knew I would.

I just re-read Neuromancer for some reason and... I still don't really get it.

Though I'm not certain it's making any particular statement. The hero mall-ninja. The wasp nest of big money. It's like a bunch of dream images each with their own resonance rattling around in what would be unfair to call 90s pastiche... because to be fair to Mr. Gibson, he invented what was later imitated.

But, yeah. I still don't really get it.

@tantramar @futurebird have you tried Pattern Recognition? It is about grief, meaninglessness and film footage. I love it.

I’m a BU PhD, profoundly grateful for the full scholarship and stipend that saw me through my 5 years there and for the DGS and faculty that saw potential in a small-town semi-first-gen kid. There is so much talent in the faculty and grad student complement and generosity of mind with it. Boston is expensive. I lived on $10k/year in the early-mid 90s. I donate to the grad workers’ strike fund so today’s grad TAs and RAs don’t have to decide which 1 veg to buy this week.

I have a heat pump. It is a ductless mini split system with three heads. I live in an 850 square foot two-storied two-bedroomed flat built directly on uninsulated concrete slab with terrible wall insulation in a city with January highs of 9 degrees C and where it rains All. The. Time. My heat pump is excellent and I love it.

PPS “dressed” for my dog means her harness, which she hates. It is a euphemism.

@tantramar this is why we say “promenade the canine” around here until within five minutes of actually walking the dog.

A quick photo post of the air dried sharp cashew 'cheese' (from Miyoko's recipe) after 4 days of drying. I will next wrap it in greaseproof paper and refrigerate for as long as we can stand to leave it. Or I could just salt the outside lightly again and leave for another few days to deepen in flavour. It's already so good! I think I'll leave it a couple more days, as we already have some of the turmeric black pepper one to eat.

"According to the report, people born before 1965 are, on average, happier than people born after 1980. Millennials report drops in their life satisfaction with every year they grow older, while boomers’ happiness increases the older they get"

Meanwhile, Gen X's unhappiness doesn't even rate

Dear autocorrect: I use the word “I” dozens a time per day. I use the word “O” when referring to our national anthem (twice per decade). Act accordingly.

@tantramar my iPhone autocorrect has decided that “The,” capitalized, should always be extended into the name “Theresa.” My next door neighbour’s name is Theresa. I have texted her 4 times.

Leveraging my and friends. A super talented and capable undergraduate student graduating at the end of the quarter reached out to me asking for career routes forward, prior to (or perhaps instead of) law school, that would allow for the exploration of , , and AI .

I know about IAPP and their training and certification programs, but didn't immediately have any additional resources off the top of my head. Thoughts? Tips? Thanks!

in Canada, Canadian Tire also pulls this garbage. It is an illegal search. At the very least, signs need to be posted declaring this policy on the way in. But I’ve read enough critical legal studies on the critical race studies and feminist legal studies fronts to say confidently that consent can be violently overdetermined and searching customers ought to be illegal, full stop.

shopping Save On Foods online in Vancouver’s east end (where you are required to have your order picked from the closest store): there will never be cheddar cheese of any brand available when they pull your order, and you will get an “out of stock” email; pasta will come only in spaghetti, rigatoni and macaroni shapes—another “out of stock email”; cultivated blueberries are sold but wild ones are reserved for west side stores; at least one item on your register tape will silently fail to appear.

mirijb2,
@mirijb2@c18.masto.host avatar

apparently there is no hashtag for Canadian nationalist grocery monopolies (=Canadian billionaires good; other billionaires bad; grocery industry best with only 4 owners of stores allowed), so there we are.

I don’t go in person b/c the last 2 times I had a full cup of soda thrown at me & was body-slammed into the door by a 6 foot 5, 280-pound, 65ish balding crew-cut white man in a golf shirt, who was angry I had accidentally exited via the entrance—& despite multiple witnesses telling me it was assault and they’d support my call to cops, VPD “reviewed security footage” and told me I’d “crashed into him,” and “should be more careful.” Reader, I am 5 foot 10 and 135 pounds. He sprained my trapezius.

it just occurred to me that I could use a high-res digital photo and info on the internet to definitively identify the maker and age of the chocolate cup my late aunt, a fan of beatnik coffeehouses who found it in a junk shop in her early 20s, gave me in the mid-90s in honour of my BA in a field involving early 19th-century coffeehouses. It is old Sheffield Plate and was made by James Dixon and Sons between 1836 and 1841. Does anyone know how to get this level of tarnish off? Silvo not doing it.

@EllieK thank you; I wondered too. The cup has been much abused.
