And the last question: I was riding earlier this week, and had just lubricated my chain, and had some very quiet tires on the bike I was riding. My pedaling felt like it was seamlessly converted to motion, with no clinking or rattling or any other sound. This is not usually the case 😅

Q8. What's a small but satisfying feeling that you experience via cycle?

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ascentale A8: that clean chain is a good one ngl

Because eBike, saying "t'hell with this, I'm Amazigirl now" and turning on assist going up a giant fuckoff hill at speed like it's flat, that's pretty good too xD

as is doing the same thing without assist, albeit with less steep hills xD

(we have a lot of hills, have I mentioned?)

showing up anywhere car people think bikes can't go. that's a good one too.

@carolski asks:

Q6. It be a little niche, but my is about hauling things. Can anyone speak from experience on the use of a bike trailer for hauling a kayak or SUP short (or long) distances? Especially if there were small hills involved.Thanks!

(And if you haven't, do you know of any other interesting purpose built hauling apparatus that connects to a cycle?)

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ascentale @carolski A6: I built a custom attachment to put a cargo hitch on my bike because the standard attachment doesn't fit, so that's been interesting. I've also been modifying the beat up old pet/child carrier I got cheap off Craigslist into a better cargo hauler. And that's been interesting to me! But none of that is big enough to move a kayak or SUP I'm afraid.

@xtaran asks about riding at night:

Q5. Do you also ride when it's dark? And if so, what precautions do you take to be seen? Just what's legally required or much more? Battery vs dynamo lights? Multiple lights? Additional reflective clothes or stickers?

#BikeNite #BikeNiteQ

moira, (edited )
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ascentale @xtaran A5: I got spoke reflectors, I got wheel lights, I got battery headlights (connected to the drive system but works all the time), I got back end lights. I want something good for the pedals but I haven't figured that out yet.

(And also I'm using super-cheap junk pedals right now anyway because my others broke and I don't have the money to replace them.)

Locally, there's a proposal to remove a path on a long bridge for most days of the week, and convert it into a car breakdown lane. There doesn't appear to be any evidence that this would improve traffic, but it will require those who would have walked/cycled/rolled to take a 40 mile detour.

Q3. Have you ever seen cycle infrastructure removed or threatened? How was it preserved, or if it was removed, what were the reasons, and what were the effects?

@ascentale A3: Honestly the best example I can think of is the Bush II administration sending Oregon's transportation plan back to them and telling them to rewrite it to get rid of all that transit and bike shit because The People - as in, their oil company backers - have chosen automobiles.

Did some some amateur solar astronomy to see that monster sun spot everyone's talking about. Yep. There it is.

A photo of a porch on a sunny day. There's a reflecting telescope set up to project a small image of the sun on a piece of white paper.

Michigan woman found living inside rooftop store sign with desk and coffee maker

Contractors curious about an extension cord on the roof of a Michigan grocery store made a startling discovery:
a 34-year-old woman was living inside the business sign, with enough space for a computer, printer and coffee maker, police said.

“She was homeless,” said Brennon Warren, an officer with the Midland police department.
“It’s a story that makes you scratch your head, just somebody living up in a sign.”

The woman, whose name was not released, told police she had a job elsewhere but had been living inside the Family Fare sign for roughly a year, Warren said. She was found on 23 April

Whelp, here's a second proofing release of the vector-graphics based map re-implementation.It's substantially finished now I think? I made a couple of very small path corrections since the last proofing release and this one has text copy and icons and a legend.

If anyone's up for helping me verify it against the last bitmap release, that'd be appreciated. That version is as always at https://github.com/solarbirdy/NorthshoreBikeMap/

@jigmedatse (oh I didn't think people would take it seriously - it's actually a heat risk map, it's just the way they built it, it looks like "every town is named major now")

I've been over this a couple of times - anybody feel like doing a proofing pass vs. the released map? Or just against reality for that matter?

Here's the released version made with bitmap tools:

https://github.com/solarbirdy/NorthshoreBikeMap/

The new vector graphics version is attached. Note it does NOT yet have icons or text or even a legend. Note also the "fuzzy line" to indicate difficult or marginal trails has been changed to a "pattern line" which I think is more legible at more sizes - particularly when printed when the difference is pretty stark.

Thanks!

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

I think the higher contrast is good too. Even at this scale in a photo-of-a-printout you can tell the challenging trails are distinct from the mainline trails.

Nothing like hanging the thing and just looking at it to make you think about what needs addressing

(Yes this is the previous, narrow version - not the absolute latest. it’s what I have printed out.)

Hate those fake updates from USPS where their computer sees that nothing has happened for a couple of days and inserts some generic "oh, we've totally put it on a truck and it's heading to you!” It has been sitting there for 3 days! Definitely not arriving today. 😔

@fozztexx I know, I’m just saying that just because you aren’t measuring a failure under those conditions doesn’t mean you haven’t found the thing that fails under operating conditions
