Techno-Feudalism Feasts Upon Us All

What if the Marxists made a mistake? What if the inevitable transition point for Capitalism isn't socialism but feudalism?

https://odinhalvorson.com/techno-feudalism-feasts-upon-us-all/

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@indubitablyodin what if the idea of inevitability in an evolving system is the wrong one? I'm pretty sure it is. When societies change, it's typically chaotic and can go a lot of ways; the way it does go can seem inevitable in retrospect, but it's usually just a frozen accident, a chaotically chosen outcome. I certainly agree with your point that a lot of rich assholes and some of their idiot minions would like to return to the lord and manor times and that it's not impossible on some level.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@indubitablyodin well said. Belief in inevitable change to a future perfected state is just religious thinking under a different name. It's irrational and enervating.

In order to understand the transformation of societies from one stable state to another through a chaotic transition I would look to complexity theory and in particular the idea of fitness landscapes and the "phase change" transitions between local minima.

The implications of neofeudalist thought are very dark -

@DeadStudies it's important to remember that not all jams are great. Some just kind of flail around for five minutes. But that's what makes the great ones great.

TonyStark, to random
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

if you can't be in a coalition with people you disagree with on at least a few things, you can't build a coalition big enough to accomplish anything in the United States or defeat rising fascism.

It’s just not going to work.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@TonyStark the only thing I have to add (given some very good existing replies) is that this is how the other side has been successful. That's the proof. They realized that with a binary system but fragmented electorate only coalitions could win reliably over time. So the business and evangelical wings forged an alliance in the Reagan era. Bankers don't really give a shit about abortion and preachers don't care about banking regulation. But they vote for each other's issues and they win.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@TonyStark (the other thing they did was started at the bottom and built a ground game. This means both taking power in local politics and taking control of the party apparatus itself. I think leftists & progressives should follow these models too. Tired of the same old bullshit from the donkey party? Take that shit over starting at the precinct level. It'll take time but it will actually work if enough people buy in. But "I'm taking over the Democratic party from the inside" won't get you laid)

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@TonyStark it's just not sexy. Taking over party functioning has an accountant vibe. Everyone knows it really needs to happen and hopes someone else will do it. But again we see how effective it is for the far right. Controlling the apparatus gives you all kinds of structural advantages.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@TonyStark @Okanogen I just like to ask, would you like to reliably win some elections or not? Yes or no? Demographics tell us that no matter how hard the other side cheats and gerrymanders, if we mobilize everyone, we'll win and keep on winning. But internal left debates are typically won by taking the more extreme position, by being more "pure." That purity testing serves the fascist agenda, which is why they're constantly feeding it via provocateurs and trolls.

@mrcompletely I read Shadow Speaker thanks to your recommending it to someone on here. Great selection. I enjoyed it and it was not something I would have known about / picked up without your endorsement.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@aburtch awesome! As I've thought about it since, I think the ending is maybe rushed somewhat. A lot of big stuff happens with characters and ideas introduced very late. But it's a very mild critique and I'm really looking forward to reading the next book. Shadow Speaker was written some time ago, and only recently updated and republished with the newly written sequel.

I just heard mindfulness defined as allowing ourselves to deeply feel what we are feeling but not to overidentify with it and I'm going to be thinking about that all day long.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@lizardllama @drewphish the temporal aspect is key. Let it pass

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@lizardllama @drewphish there's actually a key quote from Gravity's Rainbow called Mondaugen's Law:

"Personal density is inversely proportional to temporal bandwidth"

IOW the more of time your attention is spread across, the "thinner" you are. The book approaches this from the POV of someone who is spreading themselves thin to the point of oblivion, disappearing into the past and future.

So it took me awhile to realize that in a mindfulness or Taoist sense "personal density" is the goal...

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@lizardllama @drewphish the idea being that the limit case, where you have zero energy or attention spread into the future or the past, your energy is concentrated in the present moment, and since the present is fleeting and infinitesimal, your "personal density" is effectively infinite, like a singularity of the self. I think this is an interesting western rationalist metaphor for a Taoist view of time and the self

I have some delta ticket refunds that are going to expire if I do not use them.

As much as I think the sphere, and vegas, and dead music are a bad combo.

Some old good friends are going in July, and it would be nice to see them.

You can make a vegas trip nice by adding a day at Red Rocks, by just driving out to the desert.

We went "meteorite hunting" once which is really just walking around a salt flat looking for rocks, and it is great silent fun.

still undecided..

Please don't let your #dog off-leash in areas where it's not allowed. It's incredibly unsafe for your dog and also very, very triggering for people who are afraid of dogs and constrains their ability to be out in public.

mrcompletely,
@mrcompletely@heads.social avatar

@jewishreader it's one of the most selfish things that's very common among people who think of themselves as good hearted. And they get really defensive when challenged on it too.

It's 100% always an asshole move to let your dog off leash in on leash areas and anyone who says otherwise is in denial of the fact they're an asshole
