As a fan of big robots, I've wanted to get into Gundam for a long time now, but none of the series have really gripped me in a way that made me go "This. I love this".

Recently I watched Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury... and then immediately began rewatching it.

This is it. This is my show. You can't have it. Mine.

It's not perfect, and I would have liked a little more story outside of the school setting, but I love the characters, their stories, and it has some of the coolest mech fights I've ever seen animated.

Composed by Hiroshi Kawaguchi using FM synth tech, it's such an uplifting tune. I love it, and it brings back childhood memories of spending more cash than I should have in order to race around in a Ferrari with a blonde bombshell sitting next to me. 😎

After a closer look at the Apple Vision Pro reviews & talking to people who’ve used it, my prediction of the most likely path is that its evolution resembles the Apple Watch, which went from big, vague promises to a simple health & notifications device. So, a future Vision Air (or whatever) will ditch external eye displays & complexity and mostly be a very large smart display. You can tell any Mac, iPhone, iPad or Apple TV (maybe HomePod!) to extend to this display. That’s the big, basic deal.

Watched the Halloween reboot trilogy and... oof. I love horror. I love slashers. I did not love those.

The first one was okay, but Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends should not exist.

They broke one of my rules for good horror. See, horror, especially slashers, are built on the idea of mystery and power imbalance. The antagonist should have the upper hand, with the chance of death/failure being a very real possibility for the protagonist.

They pushed the power imbalance too far. There needs to be some hope that the protagonist or one of the many victims can prevail. At their core, they're a sort of underdog story. Now, remove that sense of hope and it strips the movie of its mystery. It just becomes a movie about a series of executions... which is completely uninteresting to me.

Gardening observation: after record rainfall in our area, my garden is going into "jungle mode" -- ie everything is growing very fast and large. Many volunteers!

In great contrast, the house I am staying at now (very close by) the garden beds are doing: nothing.

The difference is here they have removed all organic matter as a matter of course (previously thrown in the trash, now to the yard bin), and only used chemical fertilizers (for 50 years). Also used to regularly spray weeds wit weed killer.

At my house, every last organic scrap of food or plant trimming gets composted and turned into the garden.... Totally supercharges the garden beds.

Watched Jingle All The Way with the fam and... it was still pretty enjoyable. I was surprised that I wasn't rolling my eyes the whole time as I do with a lot of older movies from my childhood.

That said, I did get annoyed at how accurate the ending was. Completely average screw up white dad accidentally stumbles into a situation where he gets the love and adoration of everyone while the black guy gets carted away by the police... but not before a kind and generous white kid delivers him an act of kindness.

I really hate that I can even draw that societal parallel because Sinbad really is the perfect foil for Arnold and I don't think I'd want different casting.

But seriously... Arnold learns absolutely nothing and just fumbles into his family's adoration and it's celebrated as this big win.

Still love it, but my opinion of Arnold's character has not aged well.

Still on my quest to catch up on old horror. Just watched Child's Play. I'm actually surprised at how good the Chucky effects were.

Also, give the kid who plays Andy (Alex Vincent) a fucking award. There's one scene where he realizes that Chucky is coming to kill him and his crying breakdown was so convincing I'm kind of worried that someone on the crew did some horrible shit to get him to actually be scared of dying. Kid sold the role... and his one liner at the end... (chef's kiss).

All in all. Dumb movie. Not as bad as I expected though.
