One for fellow software devs out there.

I thought 'Oh, a silly grammar cock-up that makes for a fun local news story'. Then I read the first line. I won't spoil the surprise but maybe make sure there's no-one close when you yell 'OH FOR FU...'

Just for fun I’ve created a bot that is tooting the entirety of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 : A Space Odyssey frame by frame. It’s going to take about 5 years. A month or so in and we’ve made it to the opening title. Join me in watching the film in slow motion.

Oof. That was a job and half. All working first time bar one narky LED who was quickly replaced. Absolutely gorgeous bit of kit.

I’ve been putting together a collection of retro computer emulators for my Callisto 2 (RPi 4) inside. Surprisingly tricky to get right. Now wondering if there’s any interest for a one-shot install package.

For those of a Certain Age who were around during the UK tech boom era of the 90s, you may like to know that Dr Alan Solomon has died at the age of 75. Dr Solomon's Software produced amazing anti-virus software and was a brilliant place to work. I learnt so much. #DrSolomons

That pic of Sunak pulling a rubbish pint while the bartender gives serious side-eye? Fake. We can't be complacent even if the images align with our views.

I was recently in the Scottish Highlands and in a small town near our family we came across this completely random niche museum. I LOVE a niche museum but I had no idea I was going to see amazing victorian automatons including props from Hugo in the middle of nowhere. The workshop is on display and the craftspeople are amazing. Seek it out. One for @simon I reckon. https://thehouseofautomata.com/

friends. I've been blessed with a robot arm that has five geared motors (the yellow and black one that was seemingly everywhere a few years ago). Does anyone know of a suitable HAT that can handle five motors so we can hack it?

was spectacular. Completely caught me off guard. Ignore the ‘fish out of water’ reviews, that’s not what it’s about at all. If you’ve got tweens or teens, they should see it, hopefully it will empower them. Gerwig has done something amazing.

My new thing is buying cheap CDs from charity shops instead of streaming. I cancelled Spotify about 8 months ago. Spent about the same on CDs. Think I might build a Pi based auto CD ripper :)

mrpjevans,
@mrpjevans@mastodon.social avatar

@biglesp (1/2) I used abcde for encoding to FLAC. The trick is to fire a bash script when a CD is inserted. Create a bash script and then do this:

nano /etc/systemd/system/rip-audio-cd@.service

[Unit]
Description=Rip audio CD on insertion
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/home/pi/rip_audio_cd.sh %I

mrpjevans,
@mrpjevans@mastodon.social avatar

@biglesp (2/2)

nano /etc/udev/rules.d/99-cd-audio-processing.rules

SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sr0", ACTION=="change", RUN+="/bin/systemctl start rip-audio-cd@sr0.service"

sudo udevadm control --reload

Now the script /home/pi/rip_audio_cd.sh will be called whenever a CD is inserted or ejected. You can now configure abcde to rip in non-interactive mode and eject the CD on completion. (abcde -x -N)

How do so many people still have DECT phones for ?

I've searched through all my junk drawers, in the loft, and in the Big Crates Of Useful Things - but I can only find old GSM phones.

I don't even think I have anything with a BS 6312 431A plug 😮‍💨

mrpjevans,
@mrpjevans@mastodon.social avatar

@Edent I think you have the option of using a SIP soft phone as well
