I hadn't visited @OpenInfraMap in a while: it's a pretty impressive custom rendering of power and telecommunication infrastructure in OpenStreetMap.

If you need something new to map in OpenStreetMap, looks like lots of neighborhoods still need to have their power poles mapped! 😳

@Iragersh @migurski @alan @OpenInfraMap I love how things like open*map inspire entire new communities to map the things they care about. I started mapping more street lights after encountering lamp map http://osmstreetlight.bplaced.net/#15/40.7447/-111.8684
There’s a list of OSM based services on the wiki but that lists much more than these “layer lenses”

I know this is not a fair comparison, but still: an actual camera (in this case a Fujifilm X100F, first image) is still so vastly superior to the best phone camera you can get (iPhone 15 Pro Max, second image) it's not even funny. The iPhone shot is at the actual camera focal length, no digital zoom. Default settings. Fujifilm was set to aperture priority @ 5.6 which gave ISO 12800 equivalent.

Lane tagging in is once again breaking my brain. In this example, would this indicate 2 total lanes in the fwd direction, one of which is a PSV lane?

Granted, this would be one of the more challenging lane tagging situations. The new street design depicted in the screenshot below. From left to right: a parking lane, bike lane, PSV lane, traffic lane, center turn lane, traffic lane, PSV lane, bike lane and parking lane. HELP.

I am interested in @panoramax. I see that there are two instances (@ignfrance and France) accepting uploads with different licenses. Are those instances federated? Except for the licenses, are there other differences that would go into deciding where to upload? Are both instances good to use for OSM mapping from a licensing perspective?

Question for the community:

I have hundreds of POIs to upload to OSM. Most of those will be newly created, but some already exist.

What is the easiest method to do this semi manual work?
My thoughts: I'd like to generate links to iD with the map location and tags prefilled, so I can just check it's all good and validate, but I can't find how to do that?

Pinging @Doudouosm for reach (or if you have any ideas) 😃

mvexel,
@mvexel@en.osm.town avatar

@grlodi @Doudouosm you could use a @MapRoulette challenge to make it into tasks either just for yourself or for a group to complete.

There are three iPhone apps that I really really like a lot and that don't have an Android version. Silly perhaps but because of those apps I probably won't switch to Android. Do you have apps like that (either on Android or iOS)?

Hey there! I'm looking for a new gig in tech. I really enjoy doing deeply technical work, but I'm open to an engineering management / technical leadership role as well. I know a lot about geospatial data processing at scale using open source tooling, leveraging and other open geodata sources, and a fair amount about visualization and geospatial web dev. Get in touch for a chat & tell your friends! (carbon copy from my LinkedIn)

don't ask me why just yet, but how would you go about extracting all nodes that are part of a highway=motorway and then change them to natural=tree, and make an OSM PBF from the resulting data? I want to do this for the entire USA so doing it in JOSM isn't really an option.

I'm reading Janette Sadik-Khan's "Street Fight" -- her book about her time as transportation head of NYC, building bike lanes, bikeshare, and pedestrian avenues

She prints this "city of the future" model from the 1939 World's Fair

Massive highways circling mammoth buildings; virtually no non-car routes; hilariously few trees

I'd love to read about: How did this become the vision of "the future" back in 1939?

What are some good books on that? Any recommendations, I'm all ears!

mvexel,

@bagder Thanks for posting this. As maintainer of a few (minor) OSS projects, this is a question I ask myself. You say other contributors are empowered to take up any role, but that doesn't address leadership. My assumption has always been that a project needs a lead, someone who has the time and confidence to do all the things you do besides code. You write "When I leave, there is no dedicated prince or appointed heir that will take over after me [...]". Curious about your thoughts on this.

mvexel,
@mvexel@en.osm.town avatar

@bagder sure, I get that. But I’ve also seen projects, even popular ones with plenty of contributors, struggle if the creator or lead goes away. A benevolent dictator role can be hard to replace / step into. Do you see that as a risk at all?

    Iterative development of Onigiri packaging https://one-from-nippon.ghost.io/onigiri/

    I have absolutely zero experience or authority in this domain but I will say two things:

    1. I would totally buy these, frequently.
    2. There still seems to be lots of room for improving the packaging / unboxing experience.
