Wow, a huge thanks to all my new followers. Time for an introduction.

I run Nantucket E-Books, helping authors create and share the best e-books on the planet. My e-books are browser-based, very accessible (I am serious about alt-text), DRM-free, and have built-in audiobooks. It is a free software project (GPL3).

Looking for a paid writing assignment? Do you like or retro arcade ? Would you like to write for a publication that's DRM-free and uses only ?

Quarter Up is a free online newsletter published by Nantucket E-Books. I tend to look for articles in one of three areas:

  • Articles on the history of a particular game or company.

  • Interviews with someone in the business.

  • Commentary on the places where life and pinball/arcades intersect.

AT Gonzalez has been an incredible supporter of Nantucket E-Books. As a writer, he contributes e-books, promotes the platform, and helps shape its development. He needs help now with some medical bills, I encourage you to offer your support on GoFundMe. Medical debt is one of the ugly aspects of American life, and it pains me to see my friend go through this. https://www.gofundme.com/f/7tvme-help-me-pay-for-my-medical-bills

What new licenses are in the works that will deal with AI, while still promoting free culture? Is Creative Commons working on a "no AI" attribute?

I'm introducing a little contest. The contest is to produce a short story about the Steamboat Willie version of Mickey Mouse that is not horror. $50 prize for the best submission. At minimum, I'll publish it on my site's blog, if it's long enough I'll publish it as an e-book on the site. Email njb@nantucketebooks.com.

An an example, watch The Marathon, an animated short made in the USSR in 1988. Legend has it that Roy Disney was moved to tears when he saw this. https://youtu.be/AC80jcMCHJY

I thought there was a Payphones channel on Lemmy. Oh well.

Here's a phone booth I spotted in Kremmling, Colorado yesterday. (No payphone inside, but it appears to have been repurposed as a privacy booth)

We all dread the "algorithm", and the great irony is that these algorithms were embraced in the hopes of removing human imperfections like bias. Instead, they often seem to affirm and entrench these biases.

It's like in the movie WarGames, the airmen in the missile silos were replaced by the WOPR supercomputer, which would be immune to human failures. Instead, WOPR was designed to affirm a significant failure, the human idea that nuclear war could be 'won.'

Not a great look to criticize the use of AI in voice acting and then post AI-generated images of one of your voiceover roles.

I'm taking some time today to organize my email inbox. Looking back through all the correspondence with authors, artists, fans, and supports has brought me happiness and gratitude.

Also wondering why ProtonMail doesn't automatically alphabetize folders.

Lemme throw this atcha: I'm in the market for a short story (1,200 words or less) about AI. No nuclear wars, no robot uprisings, give me something happening right now. Could be a nonfiction story or fiction. Age-appropriateness: write for an audience that could handle and appreciate Frankenstein. Rate is $25.

NOTE: If you're writing a story for me now that involves AI, don't worry, this won't compete with it.

I thought Nimona was a pretty good movie. Excellent animation, and Nimona is just a fun character (reminded me of Beast Boy from Teen Titans). The first act was a bit much, there's only so much sass and tongue-in-cheek you can put onto every single line of dialogue.

This is one of those movies that was going to be deleted for a tax write-off. It was almost finished when Disney bought Fox, and then they shut it down. Now it's become a hit on Netflix, and got an Oscar nom for animated feature.

A few updates for tonight:

  1. Otto is a PNG image in the header rather than actual ASCII art text.

  2. Belatedly, the blog pages will now have their title in the title tag, and their description in the meta-description tag. Quite a concept! Links to blog posts will look nice when sharing on networks like Hangouts, Discord, or Mastodon.

If anyone needs a laptop with Libreboot, for that full-free-software experience, let's figure something out. People have helped me with my bind, I'd like to pay it forward.

These are old workhorses. I'm talking Core 2 Duo T7200's, maybe a T9600. If you aren't playing AAA games, editing HD video, or solving protein folds, they'll do just fine.
