Thanks for all the suggestions to fix my issues on macOS. A few remarks:

  • the option to always keep the menu bar visible in fullscreen wasn’t where people told me it was. I eventually found it in “missions control” for some reason.
  • Three fingers drag to move a window is awesome, why is it not in the main touchpad settings?
  • The “move” shortcut is the stupidest thing. Just use the command X feature that is IN THE MENU (why have it here if it’s greyed out all the time??)
neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP I've frequently said that ...

Apple OS are like a tram on rails: they get you where you need to go without putting in much effort, but can't take you everywhere, and you aren't really in control

Windows is like a 4-door sedan: not the easiest or flashiest and prone to needing maintenance but generally reliable and can do what 98% of users want or need. Just make sure you know a mechanic

Linux is like an off-road vehicle: can take you literally anywhere, even places nothing else can, but you better know how everything works because you might need to fix it yourself in the woods with a bubblegum wrapper and some duct tape.

@gnitro if we're doing alcohol my preference would be a Moscow Mule but we're a dry household for reasons :3

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@gnitro I pretty much only drink when I'm going out for some reason and even then I'm a 2-drink sucker lol

We've got someone in the house that has a family and personal history with alcohol and while it's been over 5 years now we figure it's better to just remove the problem entirely :D

@gnitro fortunately we're in WA so we have other means of recreation hehehe

I need additional opinions, PC Enthusiasts...

At its worst, PC symptoms were:

  1. When left awake but inactive for long periods, deadlocks
  2. 75% of boot attempts deadlocked during startup
  3. Rarely, bluescreen with "core_watchdog_timeout" error
  4. Even more rarely, automatic hard restarts before OS bootflow
  5. Literally zero problems during normal operation. Multiple tests run against all the hardware.

(1/3)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

Did a full teardown and rebuild, testing individual parts along the way.

  • It's not the GPU, repro with a different card
  • It appears that the fewer parts connected, the less frequently it deadlocks. For example, I removed two SATA SSDs during the rebuild and the machine was able to stay up overnight, which it previously was not
  • But the very next reboot deadlocked. And hasn't deadlocked in the following 3+ reboots
  • PSU tester reports all green but obviously that's not under load
  • RAM replaced completely

(2/3)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

The only possible culprits left, as far as I can tell, are motherboard, CPU, or power supply stability (like, something is happening when components try to wake up from low power states) Or maybe one of the M.2 drives. Seems highly unlikely? I've booted UBCD from USB many times without deadlocking, but I don't think that means much given the simplicity of UBCD

(3/3)

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@bittersorcerer all done. No dice.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@bittersorcerer mobo replacement is my next stop. It's not the PSU :/

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@chikorita157 @breadbin it's not ram or PSU. Replaced both now. Still seeing deadlocks

But I've got it stable enough now so I'm not going to mess with it unless it keeps happening. The only things left are CPU or mobo

Anyone else have this problem or had it in the past and know how to fix it?

For the past day my notifications aren't loading. It's just empty with a button to load them, but pressing on it just makes it act like it's loading for 2 seconds but they don't show up after that either. And it's just my notifications. I can see the other timelines and I was able to favorite a post a couple minutes ago.

So far I tried logging out and back in, didn't solve it. I also tried to see if this was a browser issue, but I can't see them on Tusky either. I'll check on this post every once in a while randomly, since I won't be receiving notifications.

neatchee,
@neatchee@urusai.social avatar

@gnitro @rei can you try accessing your notifications right now from an incognito window?

I think it should be fixed but if not I want to get the logs.

If you're on chrome or Firefox please also open the developer console (f12 on chrome) and copy/paste any red errors you see

@gnitro @rei woot woot! Just pushed it live, was gonna ask immediately :D

I would like to ask some questions of people who are heavily opposed to AI models ingesting artists' work without permission, but I'm afraid asking the questions in public will, on their own, get me cancelled :\

Anyone with a strong opinion and experience as an artist feel like chatting with me over DMs or on Discord?

    How work, from Reddit IMTrick

    Your messages (and by extension, your hashtags) are not broadcast to all servers. The way it works is:

    Your messages will be relayed to your follower's servers, and the servers of anyone you specifically tag.

    If your message is boosted by a follower, it will be relayed to the servers of that follower's followers.

    If your server uses relays, your message will be sent to other servers that use your relay(s).

    Otherwise, other servers will not see your message or the hashtags contained in it.

    @chikorita157 apart from urusai, who do we relay with, and who does @neatchee relay with?

    @neatchee@urusai.social avatar

    @anianimalsmoe the only other relay we use is neovibe. The post frequency and content are just right to keep our federated timeline active but not a firehose, and their moderation policy is very much in line with ours

    We were hit with a web request flood attack today

    One user was slamming the server with web requests, including image upload spam to load the server with image reprocessing.

    Server slowed to a crawl until I was able to identify the user and freeze their account.

    Really wish I had better admin tools to help diagnose these types of attacks :(

    I'm genuinely so much happier when I use Mastodon than Threads but I can't wait to merge the accounts and bring the good posts to the people.

    Edit: I just mean when they inevitably federate, and they will, I'll be glad to forward that account to this one and never need to visit that place again to still promote my work and use the speech platform. I do not enjoy using Threads nor do I think Meta is a cool nice company full of normal people. Everyone breathe!

    neatchee,
    @neatchee@urusai.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan .... So you're saying that, since something bad is going to happen, we should do something that causes MORE harm, or expedites the impending harm, because it's inevitable that bad things will happen anyway?

    My argument is that, whatever bad things are going to happen, embracing that inevitability actually causes additional harm.

    I'm asking if there's anything you can imagine that would convince you of that.

    And your answer is "it can't get any worse so we might as well go with the flow"

    I'm not asking if you agree with me. I'm asking what it would take for you to agree with me that it's worse to cooperate with Threads

    neatchee,
    @neatchee@urusai.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan I know what your argument is, you don't have to keep repeating it. You still aren't answering my question. But okay ✌️

    neatchee,
    @neatchee@urusai.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan and if there's literally nothing I can say, even theoretically, to convince you that "electric cars" actually cause MORE harm, then continuing the conversation is pointless. So I agree on that much at least.

    Have a good one yourself, too! 👋

    neatchee,
    @neatchee@urusai.social avatar

    @ryanhoulihan my dude, you are not comprehending my question apparently. I'll try one last time:

    Is there anything, even theoretically, I could say to convince you that your position does tangible harm and produces worse outcomes than doing nothing, even long term when considering opportunities to influence the trajectory over time?

    Please, carefully read that question to grok my meaning, and either answer "yes/no" or don't bother replying.

    You've already devolved to insults, so I'm not interested in anything but a direct answer to my question
