IanThistlethwaite, to 3goodthings

Hello there...every day that I use Mastodon, I like to list three things that I like as a contribution towards a positive online space, as well as my own headspace. If you did this today, what would feature on your list?
01. I've had a migraine for the last two days (can't see out my left eye etc), so paracetamol and ibuprofen
02. Spiny dogfish
03. Sue Galloway
@3goodthings

izabelamisiak,

@IanThistlethwaite Painkillers are a truly wonderful invention!
Also: so sorry you need them, sending warm thoughts 💚

@izabelamisiak hope you're coping ok through the holidays and you're not too exhausted/overwhelmed x

izabelamisiak,

@IanThistlethwaite Thank you for checking up on me and caring, I really appreciate that 💚 I'm doing okay, the holidays weren't very overwhelming this year. And how are you doing? xo

izabelamisiak,

@purplepadma Thank you for the gentleness! 💚 Also: always feel free to nudge me :)
Autistic burnout is kicking my ass a bit, but I do have some ideas and solutions for you - I'll polish it up a bit and send you in the next few days. Will that be okay? And how are you doing? 💚

IanThistlethwaite, to random

@izabelamisiak Hi Izabela, good to see you again, didn't see you for a few days. Hope all is well x :)

izabelamisiak,

@IanThistlethwaite Hi Ian! Thank you for checking up on me! Neurodivergent burnout hit me pretty hard, but your 3 good things always brighten my day when I see them :) Hope you're doing well 💚

izabelamisiak,

@leeleedee I'm glad she's back! 😌 💚

Today's impostor thoughts: "maybe I am doing it for meds, or attention, something like that"

Yesterday morning's : Spilling my meds all over the floor because I couldn't get the patience / motor control right and split the pill, and then while picking it all up, forgetting the cupboard where the meds go was open when I stood up full force, whacking myself right in the temple

@neurodivergents @actuallyadhd

izabelamisiak,

@loops
Me: I'm definitely faking it...
Also me [at the same day]: sticking a thermal blanket to the window because it's too bright and it's impossible to function
😉

Hope today's thoughts won't be too overwhelming for you 💚

izabelamisiak,

@loops Oh, yeah, of course you WANTED to make it more difficult! Because of reasons... /s

Also: Sorry the clothes were so unhelpful! That sucks.

Does anyone with , or have advice on how to learn a second language? I seem to have issues with auditory understanding. For example, in Duolingo I'm great at learning the language, but as soon as you remove the app, I can't understand anything because I don't see the text. Is this normal?

izabelamisiak,

@aproposnix Disclaimer: I do not have dyscalculia or dyslexia. My flavor of neurospicy likes learning languages, but/so maybe my experience will be helpful.

There is a method in which you just listen to a new language (starting with the simplest things), it probably suits what you are saying. They call it "Comprehensible Input" - it's described here: https://www.dreamingspanish.com/. The website is for learning Spanish, but the description of the method is in English. 1/2

izabelamisiak,

@aproposnix I learned English by watching British/American TV series with subtitles - first Polish subtitles, then English ones. It was an effective and easy method for my brain at the time (and before I knew I had AuDHD).

Can you tell us what your second language is? Maybe we will have some helpful materials for you :)
2/2

izabelamisiak,

@aproposnix Yeah, German should be easier than Czech, it is more similar to English, so there are fewer obstacles to jump through.
Someone recently recommended a website https://sprachy.com/ for learning German; I haven't checked it thoroughly yet, but maybe it will be useful?
1/2

izabelamisiak,

@aproposnix I don't know if it's comforting, but "total immersion" doesn't work for me at all, not if I don't know the language well enough to feel confident. I lived in Spain for a few months, and I learned nothing because I was in panic mode all the time ;) 2/2

izabelamisiak,

@aproposnix I'm so sorry you had this experience. No wonder learning a language was hard in these circumstances - the brain doesn't learn when it's focusing on survival (I'm sure there's research on this; this is not an ND-specific thing, but we are more often in survival mode). I hope you will enjoy learning German now when the situation is different. Sending hugs (if allowed) 💚

Does anyone have suggestions for alternative that actually have good, meaningful results?? That's going to mean no deeply flawed AI, no SEO gaming the system, just useful results.

This isn't about privacy or a lack of privacy. I'm just really getting sick of not finding what I'm actually looking for.

izabelamisiak,

@JeremyMallin I'm using SVMetaSearch now - for me, it works much better than DuckDuckGo (and Google, obviously ;) ).

Here is the link: https://svmetasearch.eu.org/

On my way to see the body. With a discreet emotional support in the bag.
(also need to buy a black bag for funerals, I only have a small black one, apt for theatre etc.)

@szczurtorebkowy This day was a lot, take care of yourself 💚

My brain needs reminders.

TL;DR I didn't do my taxes for two years as they didn't send a reminder 😔

When I don't get them, I know I should be doing something, just don't know what...
I didn't get any reminders for my taxes the last two years. So of course I didn't do them....
I think I need to do them within 5 years though. So I'll gather all info and when dad goes to do his taxes, I'll ask if me and my carriage of paperwork may tag along. Hopefully "his tax man" is also able to do all of mine then. So remember Pixy, you need to log in to a sites and start making prints of all needed info.
Gather and take along in April to get it sorted before it's too late.

I know I can do this. I have 5 months to get it all together. Go Pixy! 😁

izabelamisiak,

@PixysJourney Hey! Do you need/want some additional reminders from us here? I'm happy to add your taxes in these 5 months to my automatic to-do list 😁

izabelamisiak,

@PixysJourney No problem! Anyone with a spicy brain knows how tricky it can get 🙂 Sending hugs - and congrats on sorting this out! 💚

Can we normalize gift registries pls can I have one w no intent to marry or reproduce & not be looked at like an entitled freak (as if those are the only reasons to ever gift anyone anything)
No guesswork/wondering what they like no getting excited to give the perfect gift only to find they were already gifted three others no wrong sizes/colors no returns/exchanges/guilt no asking/answering “what do you want for _____”
Everybody wins :)

izabelamisiak,

@whyarewe 100% yes! For several years now, I have been choosing most of my Christmas gifts myself, and my life is simply better because of it 🤷‍♀️

I’m so freaked out by medical stuff (not to mention severe pda) I’ve never had a primary care doctor only a pediatrician 10+ years ago and urgent care visits when needed since then. Anyway. Now I’m at a doctor and it’s the worst I hate it here it smells disgusting and I want to leave how do people do this every few weeks help 😭

izabelamisiak,

@whyarewe Oh, so sorry, it sucks! You're doing great, though 💚

Is it helpful to you to assess how much time it will take to be back in the safe space? (that's one of the things that are helping me)

Sending hugs (if allowed)

@Cassandra @JeremyMallin Today I had a long delay in displaying posts from autistics.life (I saw a delay of 50 minutes to 2 hours)

Learning new skills with can be tough. Obviously, it is a learning disability, so there's that, but also, if I'm interested and the hyperfocus kicks in, I can learn fucking rocket science in a week if I really want to (okay, maybe that's a slight hyperbole... 🤔). The hardest part for me when I actually care about something is that it's so hard to just let myself be a beginner. I wanna be a master TODAY.

I've been studying voice acting for the last few years (off and on, because consistency is hard), and I've come a long way in the last year especially, but I'm still lacking a lot of vital experience and my brain is telling me to skip five steps and dive into the deep end NOW.

Being patient and disciplined is so hard. 😩

izabelamisiak,

@ADHDefy @loops 100%!

I generally love learning - I met a few teachers who managed to keep up - and that was pure delight.
I'm just sure there has to be a better way than one step at a time for a decade! 🤦‍♀️ 🤢 I know I should plan my own learning path for every topic - but you need so much executive function (and other stuff) for that 😞

If you'll find some online courses that understand us, please share 😁

And good luck with voice acting! 😊

Speaking of my latest hyperfocus, how are there not more posts on here? This must change, but I'm literally just now learning about it so some pros should really step in. No deaths due to lookalike 'shrooms on my watch, please.

izabelamisiak,

@illuminaudhd Hmmm - I had to unfollow a fungi-related hashtag because there were too many posts - did you check different options? (or maybe it was to basic for your hyperfocus - if so, sorry!)
There's FungiFriday, fungi, mushrooms, sporespondence, mushtodon, fungiverse... (and a lot more)

3 Good Things:

  1. new weighted blanket - children's size, cute sloths on one side, soft like cat fur on the other

  2. I spent the morning listening to Amie McNee's conversation with Lisa Olivera - about creativity, art, and showing up; what a treat!

  3. looking at the beautiful sky in the afternoon

What's on your list? 💚

I wish I were better at video games.

Tried Stardew Valley yesterday & just felt completely lost. Wandering around, unable to find my way back. No clear reason to do anything.

Played a few hours of Obra Dinn today and felt the same. Resorted to a walkthrough to make sure I understood what was going on.

Jedi Knight 2 on the Oculus Quest was a visual spectacle. But I ended up aimlessly trying to find out what to do.

I hate exposition in movies. But turns out I really need it in games.

izabelamisiak,

@Edent Oh yeah, 100%. Some games expect you to know and understand the mechanics from the very beginning. C'mon, I haven't played your 7 previous games - I don't know what's going on here (I'm looking at you, Book of Hours)

I flipped through photo after photo on my phone - dozens! - a movie unspooling frame by frame.

Shot at night, like now. An unknown neighbourhood but the location felt close.

Distorted obliterating creatures, advancing towards the camera.

I hadn't taken these photos.

I hadn't taken these photos yet.

izabelamisiak,

@Cassandra @anomaluridae It's a terrible nightmare to have - but very nice short fiction!
